It was a brief, fleeting thought that crossed his mind and was something he didn't intend to carry through with. It's not horrible writing if it's to establish a moment of weakness for the character, something they regret and have to live with.

It was a moment that was completely out of character and written in for convenience's sake. It's Jake Skywalker, not Luke Skywalker. Rian ****ed up, defending this crappy decision is just denial really.

We don't need hours of exposition on how Luke, Han and Leia dealt with the fall of Ben Solo. We already know how they'd deal with it. That wasn't what this movie was about.

Giving us that in detail would have ruined Kylo Ren's arc because it would have exposed too early that it was Ben catching Luke standing over him that completed his turn, that it was Luke's fault.

Who said that we needed hours of exposition? Can you show me where that was said? I’ve simply said a few lines would’ve sufficed, it would have been significant. But you dismiss this as inferring the audience would be stupid not to understand. Yet more assumptions on your part.

You’ve continued to use words like infer, subtext etc. These are essentially synonyms for assumption. It’s great that you’ve got your interpretation of what that moment meant, but you seem to struggle with accepting that others have a differing perspective of it.

And yeah, simply saying that those who don’t understand just lack comprehension is not only extremely arrogant, but it waters down some of the other good points that you may have otherwise made.

The exposition was there. Luke sensed that Ben had fallen to the dark side and he knew what a threat that was to everyone he loved and everything he had worked so hard to build. There was as much fear there as there was on the Death Star.

He had a split second thought to kill Ben before changing his mind. He didn't plot his death for months on end.

And Luke was right! Ben turned, killed his apprentices and destroyed his new Jedi Academy. He became a key member of the First Order and killed Han in cold blood.

If only Luke had angrily swung his saber at Ben like he did at Vader or the Emperor in ROTJ.

He was right? How so? That’s an amazing conclusion to draw which overlooks ‘cause and effect’.

What if it was Luke’s mistrust that pushed him over the edge? What if Luke’s approach of sneaking in on him was the straw that broke the camel’s back for Ben? What if it was seeing Luke standing over him with a lightsaber drawn was enough for Ben to say ‘**** this, Snoke was right’ and then go full dark? Cause and effect. It could have been Luke’s deeds that caused this.

I don’t see it at all about being right or wrong. Or black or white. But to simply conclude that Luke was right is a classic case of dealing in absolutes.

And you know what they say about that. Only a sith deals in absolutes.

After much thought I have landed on a 4/10

It would have gotten a 5 (bog-standard) but after the Leia as Mary Poppins stupid, topless Kylo stupid, BB-8 doing everything to the point of slapstick stupid, over-the-top Phasma death stupid, and Hux pivoting from competent to, well, stupid, it gets knocked down a point

Not to mention it felt every minute of its bloated 2.5 hour run time

Two hours? Didn't feel like it.

We had teriyaki chicken skewers, angus royale and pulled pork sliders, james squire 150 lashes beer, vanilla bean sundaes and comfy leather sofas in Gold Class but I'm sure that had nothing to do with it.

Seriously though (& not having read this thread), what was new here? Nada, zero, zilch. Characters killed off, retired, whatever you wanna call it & reincarnated on the spot so the money machine can just churn away again. Sad. Not funny, not original, just nothing really. Didn't hate it but it did nothing for me. Sad.

I did get a laugh toward the end tho with Leia's Yoda impersonation, that kind of sealed the deal for me.

One of the biggest disappointments was seeing Rose survive. Just imagine a spin-off movie for her. Maybe there'll be an alternate timeline one where where she travels to Luke's island and castrates him about shooting womp rats back home.

They haven't explored his character in any depth

And that hug with Rey, surely they should have kissed. There's tension there but they get him to akwardly pash Rose instead

That's what people are saying about her.

The only good new character that RJ introduced that people enjoyed was "DJ" (benecio del toro).
