Sandgate are heading in the right direction. Coach Marsh is a good teacher and will have his group playing a modern accountable style of footy. They have some good young kids who, if they can stay together, will be a real force after à few years. Patience is the key.
Both seniors and reserves finished on the bottom of the ladder. Which direction are you talking about??

The fact that's it's a new coach with a different game style. it appears pretty obvious what he's talking about.
We all want an even comp and I wish them well this year. But the reality is, you can bring in a 3 peat AFL coach who changes the game plan, and talks as you'd expect, but if you dont have the cattle, not alot is going to change.

Have 4-5 new recruits from interstate/NEAFL come into the team?

If they stay together over a few years (as it says) under new guidance, with their new ground and change rooms they may be able to attract some quality to their young group. We will have to wait and see but it would be great. If they could turn it around

You have to wonder about this. You often hear kids parents telling them not to play footy to focus on Year 12.

It's madness to give it away 'to focus on year 12'. If you're at a good club, which lets be honest, a majority are good clubs with good environments despite our allegiances - then playing Colts football is great for learning more about leadership, teamwork etc.
They' re not giving away sport FAN. Quite a few of the kids in the 16s from last year are at private schools. Their school sport is on Saturday morning and many have the opportunity to play in the Firsts for their school. I know at least four of the key position players who have made the choice for school sport. Our captain took a football scholarship at a Geelong private school and a few others have been trying to crack QAFL at WG.

Given that we couldn't field a full 22 during the season last year (only the bare 18 at times including "u15s", which says something for the GF win), it puts the numbers into better perspective.

I know as a club we do not actively recruit players. We are well aware that we need clubs like Sandgate and WG to be strong to ensure that northside football is strong. If we are a destination club of choice for some though we can't help that.

Was watching Broadbeach yesterday in their practice game. They are looking very bad at the moment it's lucky that it's only April. Josh Searl and James Royce were playing twos not sure what the go there was.
Any news from other games over the weekend?

How did Mt Gravatts Colts go do you know?

Have to wonder who was at full strength etc in the weekend games.

Surfers dispatching the mercernaries at Grange and the Magpies easily accounting for Palm Beach would be major surprises.

The ease with which the Vultures pummeled Broady is also surprising, though The Vulture have been noticeably quiet on the recruitment front - but had some handy names running around on Saturday from what I hear.

Was in town for the week and caught the Vultures game, looks like Webby has them playing some good football, their game style is very much like the AFL.

Stubbs gone down south to Wodonga. They’ve also lost their captain Murphy to overseas travel. Not ideal losing your only two Team of the Year members.

Looks like they Have added a few, I think they will be more even across the field and more depth than last year. Unsure how they stack up against rest of comp, but they made the Cats look ordinary

Practice games are practice games ......give no real indication ... it starts when the official 1st round kicks off

that's a strong comment about Grange fan the man any reason behind it.

what do you mean?

Grange have been cheque book recruiters for 3 or 4 years now, mostly recruiting pretty average blokes who are good individual players.

It's got them precisely nowhere, so given their much publicised recruiting in the off-season again this year, it was interesting to see them beaten by a side others have suggested will be close to the bottom of the ladder. Surfers will be much stronger than people think, and Grange will yet again be a bunch of inidividuals there just for the matchies.

Can anyone please give me a valid reason as to why qafl doesnt start untill 22nd? And please dont say the Com games have anything to do with it!
Round 1 on April 7th was put aside for a wet weather bye round and round 2 April 14 th there is a music festival just south of Byron!

Would you go as far as naming names? Be very interested to know who you think are the average blokes only playing for their matchies? Pretty easy to throw statements like that around but without namng names its very hard to take your statement seriously

Not sure you can judge anything by this practice match.
A few Grange players looked short of a gallop that's all. I think most people expect us to be improvers and fair enough as the young blokes have got more experience and a few players returning is helping build a bit of depth and they are well coached.
Love to see finals but happy for 7-8 wins which might put us in the mix.

Maloney, Proud, Thomson, Hannaford all spring to mind in the most recent seasons as pretty questionable characters recruited on coin despite probably not passing the 'dickhead test' at most clubs.

All just a matter of opinion though!

Maloney played ok last year, was great for the club and the juniors so he was worth his money.
Proud off field had his problems so he fails the dickhead test for that, played well for us so was good on the field.
Thomson has been great for the club, he has played ok in 2 games, he has taken our u12s for training attended junior practise games so at the moment he has passed the dickhead test.
Hannaford a very different person so I will give you that one.
I would say we have the same amount of failed dickhead test players as all clubs, and maybe we give blokes a chance and if they don't fit in then they get moved on as only one is still playing.

Come grab me for a beer when you come down, happy to buy the first.

All the best for 2018

It's purely the optics for me mate, Proud had well known issues - how does a club go and recruit a guy like that on big coin when you have a slew of juniors and a positive womens footy environment?

Even your comment that he was a good 'on field' recruit, would you say that to a mother of an U/12s player?

Every club has dickheads, most people here think I'm a dickhead. It's just that not many clubs actively chase people everyone already knows is a dickhead!

I've got nothing against Grange, just from afar it seems they have chased players hard in the last few years with the chequebook, as opposed to developing from within and building a sustainable senior footy culture. I've been wrong before though
