Kinda off topic - but how many pages does a thread get to before mods close it & open part 2, part 3 etc?

Just thinking that being only May and the somewhat weekly talk of what's going to happen with Kelly, just feels like this is doing to be an extremely long thread before we even get to the end of the season when trade talk generally picks up pace

In truth I haven't really got a feel for WC at the trade table... but Id say most of Geelong supporters would say the same about us. Traditionally we have received less and backed our recruitment team to make the most of the pick. This year however its complicated by the FSons. You will have more leverage at the 2019 trade table..but id say thats probably true of Freo as well. It also gives us an extra 12 month of service which would make us more benevolent.

The Eagles coughed up their 1st round picks for Wellingham and another for Redden a few years later.

I think they were both pick 18's.

No fuss just did the deal.

Thats a couple of recent examples. A couple of others were rhey used 2nd round picks on Yeo and Cripps. But at that stage niether player had shown a lot.

There's a high likelihood Kelly could request a trade come years end like Marcus Adams in 2016/17 (don't remember).

We'll just have to wait and see though.



21 + our 2019 second sounds fair, could see the club doing that.

Apart from 4 spots and about 147 points ..The difference is 17 is a R1 pick. Having two R1 picks this year would loosen our trade restrictions going forward. You are aware of the 2R1's in 4 years rule?

The only difference between TK and other WA draftees is he is mature and has a family. Heres hoping he signs soon and we move onto who will be coming rather than going.

The rule has not yet been adjudicated on yet.. I think it kicks in at the end of this year .. so from 2019 clubs will be assessed on how many R1's they have picked in the previous 4 years.

Going ahead is sort against the recent trades of Geelong. As a team in the now ..losing a player like Kelly probably hurts our now.

Also ..Trading Your 2019 R1 means that you will not be able to trade your 2019 R2.. its gets complicated with multiple clubs but you may need a second club for that R2 pick. if it was all futures.

Its very rubbery.. and Im certainly not getting too serious about it yet.

The comp may be weak but under no circumstances can I see us beating richmond.
They’re better than last year

Richmond are hardworking but vastly overrated. Their gameplan makes them good the list is middle of the road. If we bring the right tactics and buy in from the players we can beat them.

While he's in contract yes that or a replacement player for our 2019 flag tilt (ie Gaff) is what it will take. Ask yourself this Geelong are in a 2-3 year window which they drafted him to replace Motlop for, he's under contract and he's hardly going to walk out after 1 year ala McCarthy because has 3 kids to support. Why would we trade him after 12 months for a deal that makes our flag tilt weaker after we've gone aggresively for mature players the last 3-4 years for that tilt? Whether he's worth that or not that's the deal it will take if you want to shift him while under contract.

Brad Hill was OOC Kelly isn't.

Given Kelly's current form, I guess a potential comp pick (say 17-19) plus 35 would be more fair. terry_bright suggested something similar earlier (21 + 35), so the former's probably a better offer.



Would you pay the same for Andrew Gaff?



Because he might beg to come home at the end of 2018. Nothing is concrete, but it's a possibility.

I would pay that for Gaff if he wasn't FA yes but he is so that changes it.

Whether 17 +35 is fair for Kelly is irrelevant as has been explained at length those picks aren't much use to us because of A) our F/S situation this year and b) we'd need to trade for a replacement player for Kelly for our flag window anyway. It's going to cost you a pick near the top 10 (that carries no risk of having to be used for FS) and/or players that can slot into our best 15 or so to get it done this year. There's no incentive for Geelong to deal him 12 months early otherwise.

If the family struggle we will give them more support but he's hardly going to walk away from AFL after 12 months to play WAFL and support 3 kids on that and an apprentice wage so no reason for us to trade him early. Almost all the guys that walked away from AFL like that didnt have kids to support.

If we didn't have FS it's getting closer.

But we have no idea where Brownless and Scott will get bid so I doubt it.

Bundle 17 and 35 to another club for say pick 10 give us that and the 2nd then we would talk (not saying we'd deal for that but it would leadt get us to the table).

Simply putting up a recent example of a decent midfielder and what he was traded for. Hill is a good accumulator and user, similar age but with much more exposed form.

I recall Byrnes was a small forward not afull time mid so agree not really comparible.



So if Hill went for a 2nd is a late 1st round pick for Kelly ridiculous? I wouldnt think so.

Contract status is a huge difference here.

He won’t walk out or request a trade after 12 months, it just won’t happen the club has already told him he’s a required player...he’s know that the WA team won’t overpay for him when they have ignored him over the years.

I think this is a hypothetical scenario.... He is one of the best in the 2017 draft. A top ten pick is what i would be asking if he wanted to go and was contracted.

Someone gets passed over 5 times..finally gets drafted and pulls and McCarthy after 12 months... cant see it personally. He stays in , one way or the other ..keep playing like he is and he is in for a 1M dollar contract min. by the end of next year.... whether its here or over in wa

Id rather picks so ..there you go .. but it depends on the players I guess. Its a hard road to hoe... not many Eagles player that are bargains in their late 20's.

I know this is the Geelong board but your point regarding showing loyalty due to drafting him is a bit of a stretch. Cats pounced ( as cats do) with pick 21. He would have been drafted by the Eagles either with 26 or 37 without a doubt. So to claim that Kelly owes the club is a tad naive.

Who really knows what is at play here. Maybe his manager is angling for a better deal. Maybe the Kelly's are struggling with a young family and the pull home is legit. Maybe the Eagles know Gaff is going so they have put a big fat $$$ carrot out there.

As to what could be done if I was the Cats Id enquire about Cole, a Geelong lad who is really coming on. As an Eagles fan Id be unhappy losing him so we would both be unhappy. Maybe a pick swap needed to balance things up but Cole is looking promising and by seasons end we will know more.

Your forgetting that WE drafted him, not the eagles. We hold the cards here not you. It’s our good fortune we were prepared to give a better pick than you guys. For that you will pay handsomely.

For the sake of Geelong I hope he smashes it this year and next and you will pay hard for him!

Yeah na I guess it depends on what you think is "overpay" .. so not sure about that part. If the Weagles lose both FA's or even just 1 they will have cash...and Gaff out and Kelly in probably sees them still better off in SC space.. . If we compare his output to Motlops what do you think he is worth and what is over pay.

I reckon Bailey is a 15-20 bid personally but we will see. Anyway my point was Geelong i doubt take any pick for Kelly unless it's high enough they are certain it will be live and not for bids. After trading out R2 and in 2 x R3 and 2 x R4 we would be morons to take a pick for Kelly that goes on a bid.
