Like Bastinac, Bell, Walker, Frost, Jansen, Paine, West, Lisle, etc.

Out of that list, Jansen Paine and Lisle were too soon along to be "known quantities", we traded them on potential not performances. Didn't work out, but that's potential for ya. Didn't pay much for West and he was useful depth on those occasions when he was healthy. Frost's concussion-riddled 2017 was sheer bad luck. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah, we really paid through the nose for those guys. Good point.

They’re mostly all guys we paid a ‘premium’ on to get to our club. Similarly we’ve had a poor return on the guys we’ve paid high picks for (Beams and Bundy) and overpaid for Cameron based off his previous output.

Neither strategy has worked well for us in the past. I’ve been supportive of paying this premium in the past just to get someone on the list who won’t leave in 2-3 years however our retention issues seem to be under control and this method won’t lead us to the massive improvements we need to jump up the ladder.

Players like this actually probably strengthened our need to get Cameron.

It's rare we get a player that wants to come home and is actually a genuinely good player as well. Cameron was absolutely, always going to slot into the team and be in our best 12 players.

Pick 12 felt like too much at the time but when he's out there each weekend it feels like a fair trade. At this stage of our list development we can't risk not getting players in his age bracket who add so much to our team in areas we are deficient in.

I don’t think many would claim a lot of what we paid for Cameron was based on potential as well despite being 23. We knew at the very least we were getting an average small forward but we were paying for some to get to all Australian level.

‘premium’

What's your definition of a premium?

Two of those players were brought in with a single third rounder, another with a pick swap in the 4th round.

Can't believe we spent a draft pick to get a player who wanted to be here and is good now instead of a player who probably doesn't want to be here and will probably be good in the future.

GTFO Noble.

I know there are supposedly all these wonderful, hidden benefits of the exercise, but that crowd in Shanghai is such a bad look.

24 million people in Shanghai but Port can’t even entice enough curious onlookers to fill a third of that tiny stadium.

But it's a sell out!

I know there was more to his departure and it might be the right move in the long term, but you can't tell me a fit Rockliff wouldn't make us a much better side this season what with our complete absence of reliable ball winners.

No doubt, but would it take midfield minutes from blokes like McCluggage and Berry who are our long term mids? Yes. Pros and cons and in the end his pick allowed us to trade up to secure Bailey so definitely a long term win at this stage.
