but he wasn't inducted into his club hall of fame tonight, was he
No that was last year actually.
But hey you were just being sardonic anyway.

Those statistics alone indicate he should be in regardless of the context.

Seeing that the club he played for is over 140+ years old and has had players like Barassi, Flower and Stynes and he tops them all says something more.

longevity doesn't equal hall of fame worthy and given those clubs records stand a long back from the league records, I reckon it just says more about the interesting history of the melbourne football club. There were a fair deal of great forwards throughout the 00's and Neitz isn't really in the first few names that spring to mind.

Here is the total list of players who have played 300 AFL/VFL games and kicked 600 goals

Gordon Coventry
Leigh Matthews
Bernie Quinlan
Kevin Bartlett
Nick Riewoldt
Matthew Pavlich
Alistair Lynch; and
David Neitz

Fair company. All of those other players are justifiably walk up hall of famers.
And only Lynch can also lay claim to being an AA key defender at one point in their career.

To reduce his contribution to football as being simply longevity is a ridiculous reduction.

No. It's that I don't think his 'contribution' to football was enough to make it into the Australian Football Hall of Fame. And I ain't buying that it is. Good for him, he had a good run with injures which allowed to get to a mark plenty others couldn't but in the end, I ain't buying that that he should have got in before, say, Brendan Fevola. I must say, I find it interesting that Neitz made it in just as his eligibility to get in through the silly "must pick two players who have retired in the past 10 years" rule expired...

(incidentally, on the AA key defender thing, he kicked 33 goals and got named on the interchange bench that year. it seems likely he was picked as a true swingman. And yes, Pav did get named as the AA fullback.)

Didn't Pavlich get the AA nod as a full back? Then a mid and then the last few as a fwd?
Yep.

Beat Fletcher to the spot in the AA team despite the selectors acknowledging he never played there and that Fletcher was the best FB that season.

Was the moment AA officially became a farce.

Am I still bitter? You better ****ing believe it.

i feel like the Pavlich thing has sorta became a wives tale over the years. as in, sometimes the way people talk about, you'd get the impression he played all year in the forward line or something. it seems he played more as a CHB than a FB, but that's a bit of a wash. Fletch did miss 4 games that year as well. sometimes it's made out to be a completely illogical thing

anyway here's a thread made at the time: https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/pavlich.48318/

Better or worse Hall of Fame pick than Mark Bickley?

Eagles showed the blueprint

Did the Eagles show the blueprint - Richmond dominated the second quarter and had 23 inside 50's to 3 - Richmond should have been four goals in front at half time and then it would have been a different game - WC did well to stop Richmond's onslaught in the second quarter but it's not something you would want to rely on week after week.

It seems a year where many people media and general supporters alike have gotten a lot wrong coming into the year.
I had North wooden spooners
I had west coast missing finals as i didnt know they had a midfield after losing priddis and mitchell (side note mitchell has brought more to that midfield as a coach than as a player, doing a brilliant job)
Melbourne i had bottom 2 of the 8 and while i dont think this form they are in will hold, in a year where there is no really strong teams they could be a chance of snatching a few finals wins.

Only one i picked was us actually, thought we would struggle with no midfield.

Ah - I had Kangaroos and WC in the bottom 4 - Will add the Kangaroos could fall quickly if they get injuries to the wrong players.

Neitz was the ultimate team player - He could have had a more decorated career if he didn't switch to the forward half - At the time of the switch he was the second best tall defender after G.Jakovich.

Just realised Sydney play Carlton on Friday night this week.

Wtf AFL?
Just realised that my oldest (6) is playing auskick at half time in this game (his first time), which is an amazing proud daddy moment.
And then realised we'll be surrounded by my two most despised supporter groups while we wait for half time haha.
Wtf x 2!

Yeah he played CHB.

He also went forward and played on the ball, but you know where he absolutely didn't play at all that season?

Full Back.

FYI - the 'Should Carlton get a Priority pick' thread on the main board is a ripper.
Its staggering when Carlton fans are the ones making sense.
