Nah, i reckon Stamos just has NFI & doesnt get it :)

Its pretty obvious that we will get Sheil for free next year so why waste any sort of pick. Good players come to clubs free these days.

Pick 1 guarantees the next "superstar/best player ever" so theirs no point trading it for 2 good picks in what is supposed to be a "super draft".

Lets look at this for a sec- whats better? 1 pick or 2 picks in a supposedly awesome draft? what about 1 pick and a ready made, all Australian gun mid ?

Lets all so ignore the fact that the club has said we need to fill the 25ish age bracket- thats not a BF opinion- thats the club!

No it doesn't. Not at all. Pick 1 guarantees sweet FA.

The potential benefit in trading for Sheil this year is that moving forward it could potentially save us $1-2 million over the next 5 years. By taking him now, assuming he's on $800k a year (and willing to sign a 5 year contract with us on similar coin) and GWS do find some cap space, we might have to offer $1-1.2m to be high enough for GWS not to match.

This would be a big help moving forward to have that extra cap space when some of our other players are looking for bigger contracts.

Ah, hell no!

The Blumour well is bone dry and we are thirsty. We need the Desal plant after all.....

Time to call VISY.

Rumors for Goddard, Pavlich, O'Keefe.

Who says no?

Oh boy..
I get goosebumps just thinking about Cripps and Shiel leading us out of the race at the 'G wearing Navy..
Big bulls ready to go and get 50 disp, 30 contested, 10 inside 50's, 10 tackles... combined
Compare the pair

Add to that a fit Doc/Murph/Marchbank etc
Another preseason into SPS/McKay/Charlie/Dow/Obrien etc...

We will all be saying... Luko who?

No they aren't, but I am yet to see a reasonable explanation as to why GWS would give up more than Dylan Shiel. There is zero incentive for them to agree to it.

GWS don't have to. We can trade Pick 1/2 to someone else for multiple picks/players and use some of those for Shiel. Gold Coast, Brisbane, St Kilda, Freo, Adelaide - they'd all likely be willing to discuss terms.

Freo: Pick 7 + Cerra (if he wants out)
St Kilda: Pick 5 + Billings
Gold Coast: Pick 4 + Brodie/Scrimshaw/Pick 16
Brisbane: Pick 2 + Cox
Adelaide: 2x firsts if Sloane goes

None of those get done for Pick 1 alone, we potentially need to add later picks or swaps to balance the ledger, but they give us options.

There's also the fact that nobody else can offer GWS Lukosius. Depending on how highly they rate him - maybe he's worth tossing in an extra pick or a fringe mid? There's also the fact that losing Shiel may allow them to satisfy contracts for a couple of other important players - it may benefit them to move him on.

I hope people start taking everything Paul Roos has to say with a massive grain of salt.

He has become one of the all-time flip floppers with regards to his media commentary. Seriously. One week he'll say something that he believes in unequivocally. The next week or a month later he'll say something that goes 180 the other way. When asked why he tries to shimmer his way out of what he had previously said.

I guarantee if we traded Shiel for pick 1 there would come a time next year when he asks why Carlton considered such a trade when they had Jack Lukosius on the table and other teams would have paid so much more.

It all boils down to this. Media personalities, regardless of how much footy IQ they have, are put on the spot and know they have to say something that generates public discussion. That's their number one responsibility. How many times do you see a highly controversial opinion generated by someone in the media? Recent example: Neil Mitchell got his name all over the media for saying that the FFA should stop putting a focus on international football after Australia's World Cup exit. An AFL related one is Robert Walls West Coast wooden prediction. He knows football. Had he spent more than a moment going over the WCE list he would realize that their 24-30 age group was far too talented to be a genuine wooden spoon threat (even without overperforming like they did in the first half of the year). Hell, he may even have known what he was doing. It was a controversial point on a team that he hates that was purely there to get his name into the public discussion. Do you think he achieves that by predicting a wooden spoon for Brisbane or Gold Coast. Maybe he does for Carlton "WALLS Slams Former Club..." but nobody else without looking senile.

I think the article in the HUN today where SOS is stating how hard it is for bottom clubs to attract free agents is a subtle hint to members and supporters that we are currently into free agents like Gaff with No luck at all! given our performances this year you can't blame them and as SOS says you can't go giving Free agents 1.5mill a year just to make them look at us because it wrecks the cap for everything else.

As a result of this our first pick for Shiel is on the table this year at a minimum. Our trading relationship with GWS of recent years will see that these discussions are taking place in good faith. As far as everyone is concerned Shiel will leave GWS as a free agent next year to come home with limited compensation for GWS (probably a pick near 20) - SOS will be offering our first this year early for Shiel to go now (top 2 pick) to mitigate the risk. Shiel is also a childhood blue much like Doc was when up at Brisbane and has mates at Carlton so it's a low hanging fruit to take. The risk the following year is we won't get him as a FA as he can pick his location. As much as he barracked for Carlton if Geelong, Hawthorn or Melbourne came knocking with the same money and we have another tough year then make no mistake it will be difficult to attract him. SOS knows this.

I agree with this stance as long as we can trade into the top 10-12 - as good as Luko or Walsh could be (and with Luko we could pass on another Charlie or better) we as a club need a midfielder of shiels quality and age to come in and give Cripps some help. as long as we get a top 10-12 pick back somehow then it has to be done. Understand the risks of trading top 2 pick in such a good draft but we need to realise that if there is not immediate improvement next year then questions will be asked by all and no FA worth their weight in any shape will consider us.
Shiel into our midfield as a 26 year old with Cripps, Dow, Kennedy, SPS, Murph (if he stays) is a platform to build on and quickly.

On a side note FREE Agency is going to kill GWS and GC in my view, no players want to play there and the lure of the bigger clubs is going to destroy them. we are seeing that now with Lynch, May, Kelly, Shiel etc. If we were located on the GC or GWS in the last 15-20 years we would cease to exist!

I don't know about that. There have been times in the trades that we've already made with them that GWS have tried to milk the club for everything that it can. Sure the trades have gotten done in the end but I wouldn't necessarily say that they're as 'good faith' as what you might believe. In fact, they've tried to **** us over in the end. Much of this is the Marchbank trade but other followers have posted about their tactics previously.

Agree. GWS happily traded away players to other clubs for 2nd/3rd round picks and we suddenly were expected to give up pick 5 for Marchbank.

That's probably the sticking point. Pick 1 for Shiel and Pick 9 is probably not gonna happen. Perhaps if GWS had an academy player rated in the top half dozen they'd be open to offloading 9 if we could help them secure more points in second rounders. But there are no notable academy players for them this year.

Maybe 1 for Shiel and 24, and open us up to trading 23, 24 and 26 for a higher pick. Does anyone do that deal? Adelaide won't want to drop out of Rankine/Rozee territory. Sydney perhaps, if they get bundled out of finals in week one? Picks 24 and 26 for Pick 10, improves their draft position later on if Blakey gets the likely bid inside the top 10. Hawthorn might consider it given they traded a lot of picks last year, a few extra second rounders might interest them to balance out their list. They'd be around Pick 10-12 as well you'd think. Same with Noirth - though I'm not so sure Thomas attracts a top 10 bid, so they may be prepared to take the risk.

Live trading makes a mess of things too, because teams like Sydney and North can now wait til draft night to see where the bid comes. If Thomas gets a bid at 8, North can trade Pick 11ish for a few second rounders to come out ahead. If the bid doesn't arrive by their pick, the get an extra quality player. Leaves us in a position where we don't know if we'll have an opening to do the trade until the night.
