I think its better off trading pick 1 to Adelaide for multiple first round picks, then using those picks to pick up 1 or more senior players.

I like this.... pick 1 for 2 first rounders, then package a 1st from this year and next for Shiel
(Which puts him in the Treloar, Gibbs, Lever and O'Meara range) and use a 1st in this draft.
Nice...

And the shafted part is my issue. He isnt worth a pick in the top 2 of this draft. But we are going back abd forth on the matter.

If you are happy to give up a walsh (who will go past Shiel in 3 years (in my eyes)) or a potential charlie clone, than thats your opinion. I am not
I'm not sure JL is seen as a 'Charlie clone'. He's about the same height, athletic, good skills, decent endurance... but from what I gather he's not so much a big marker, doesn't crash packs or jump on heads like Charlie. More of the Riewoldt up and down the field in space kind of player.

At the end of the day it's still speculation about these kids. There's hype about Lukosius and Walsh (and used to be about Rankine) but what's to say that someone like Smith or Rozzee or whoever doesn't go on to be the best player? Or one of the top 5 favourites ends up injury plagued or just doesn't improve?

I mean, look at some recent-ish top 10s:

2012: Whitfield, O'Rourke, Plowman, Toumpas, Stringer, Macrae, Wines, Mayes, Vlastuin, Daniher.
2013: Boyd, Kelly, Billings, Bontempelli, Kolodjashnij, Scharenberg, Aish, McDonald, Salem, Freeman.
2014: McCartin, Petracca, Brayshaw, Pickett, De Goey, Marchbank, Ahern, Wright, Moore, Cockatoo.

Some superstars, some unlucky with injury, some that in hindsight seem pretty uninspiring picks. While there's a chance they live up to the hype, what's to say Walsh and Lukosius aren't looked back at like Toumpas and McCartin?

And what's to say that Shiel (who hasn't really had that bad a run with injury, particularly over the last 3 years) doesn't do a bit of a Burgoyne who's just shy of 200 games in his 9 seasons at Hawthorn?

At the end of the day, we're just going to have to wait until the season is over and watch it all unfold, if anything happens at all. Hell, maybe we just end up taking our first pick to the draft and perhaps we read out a players name that no one was expecting at 1/2... like the King who plays in the backline.... or a ruck...

That's probably the sticking point. Pick 1 for Shiel and Pick 9 is probably not gonna happen. Perhaps if GWS had an academy player rated in the top half dozen they'd be open to offloading 9 if we could help them secure more points in second rounders. But there are no notable academy players for them this year.

Maybe 1 for Shiel and 24, and open us up to trading 23, 24 and 26 for a higher pick. Does anyone do that deal? Adelaide won't want to drop out of Rankine/Rozee territory. Sydney perhaps, if they get bundled out of finals in week one? Picks 24 and 26 for Pick 10, improves their draft position later on if Blakey gets the likely bid inside the top 10. Hawthorn might consider it given they traded a lot of picks last year, a few extra second rounders might interest them to balance out their list. They'd be around Pick 10-12 as well you'd think. Same with Noirth - though I'm not so sure Thomas attracts a top 10 bid, so they may be prepared to take the risk.

Live trading makes a mess of things too, because teams like Sydney and North can now wait til draft night to see where the bid comes. If Thomas gets a bid at 8, North can trade Pick 11ish for a few second rounders to come out ahead. If the bid doesn't arrive by their pick, the get an extra quality player. Leaves us in a position where we don't know if we'll have an opening to do the trade until the night.
Live trading will be an almighty can of worms, there’s the distinct possibility of getting screwed over because someone else is a complete numpty & balls up what would have been the smart play

Rankine has been good today, broke the game open.

Rankine is a sublime talent just as Lukosius is, it will be very difficult to spilt these lads come draft night, they're head and shoulders above the rest.
However I like the idea of having two Charlie Curnows running around us forward line.

I reckon live trading will be awesome. Tipping SOS is made for the frantic 'time on the clock' and has the mirror ray bans ready to go.
