Rankine is a sublime talent just as Lukosius is, it will be very difficult to spilt these lads come draft night, they're head and shoulders above the rest.
However I like the idea of having two Charlie Curnows running around us forward line.
Yep both have big motors, we know Charlie could also push to midfield also.

Keep playing like we did last week and we wont have that option though.

And there you were on messenger telling me what a solid head coach he is. Almost felt as though you wanted us to sakc Bolts. :D:p
He was effective as a head coach... won a couple of games that blind freddy could have won. Outside of that, bloody useless :p

If anyone thinks Shiel makes Carlton a destination club, I have a bridge to sell you.

There's no doubting he's a great player but he's no Dangerfield or Dusty who transform a club.

We already have a pair of guns who can make the club a destination club in Cripps and Charlie C.

Give charlie 2 years we are well on our way

I don't pretend to have all the answers as far as the pick1 Lukosius vs Pick 1 for Shiel trade goes, but according to an interview given by SOS himself to the heraldsun, it does seem that Shiel is in fact a very high priority for SOS.
Reading between the lines of that interview, SOS has indicated, no, in fact stated, that we are quite prepared to trade the number 1 pick this year rather than wait for yet another skinny number 1 pick to produce premiership contender-like football.
There is no way known that SOS will give away pick 1 for Shiel alone but it does seem that it will be for some kind of package.
I believe that it will be pick one for pick 9 and a player, and quite possibly an exchange of latter picks. Keep in mind that we have no third round selection atm but are also rumoured to be interested in Brayshaw and possibly Tyson as well.

Our picks 23 and 26 will probably not get the deal done for Brayshaw but maybe a deal with GWS for Shiel could give us a pick that might get either one of those two players, or even a comparable player from another club.

If we do trade for Shiel and something like what I have mentioned is a starting point, then it can only be seen as a massive win for Carlton because any other club that wants to get hold of pick 1 will have to offer up something that is of huge benefit to CARLTON to get the deal done.

If the 2 SA clubs want Lukosius that badly, then they are really going to have to pull something quite magical out of the hat, otherwise the deal simply won't happen, and that will result in 2 things 1)We get Shiel and GWS gets pick 1 and 2) neither SA club gets their local boy.

If the Crows get a top ten selection for losing Sloane, we could ask for that pick or their current pick as part of a deal for pick 1, plus a good player.
Then GWS has to increase their offer to get pick 1, and so on and so forth.
So whatever way it pans out, CARLTON can not possibly lose.

Lukosius alone will not make us into a premiership contender. Neither will Shiel, but the possible combinations that could arise from any trade of pick 1 could very well set us up for the start of good things to come and also save Cripps in the meantime.

Add in a free agent such as Wallis, some trading for decent fringe players such as Tyson, players that may want to change clubs for a bit more coin like Brayshaw and some that may be looking for more opportunity such as Horlin-Smith/Lovell/Miles and the club will have made a decent start towards the next premiership because the addition of a few players, not just one, will allow Cripps some protection and also allow Fisher, etc the space needed to create a bit of havoc because they won't be copping so much attention week in, week out.

Nice post ^^^.

I suspect so much of what SoS wants to do hinges on having the number 1 pick. Have pick 2 and everything changes - you just select Walsh and have to work so hard for any mature agers (Tyson etc.). Just how much will Carlton push to remain last in what is really a pivotal draft/trade year. Bolton wont want a wooden spoon as that goes down recorded in history against his name. SoS will have a different view. Last or second last. The draft/trade benefit scenario differs wildly based on one spot!

This year, number 1 is worth more than any other recent year because of the hype on Luko and because Adelaide have quite a few picks to get a deal done. I bet they would be willing to give up a lot to land the Rankine/Luko duo...giving up first round picks plus next year's first. They might do package deals with other clubs before coming to Carlton with what we want (that is, if we hold pick 1).

SoS will have a boner right now but as soon as we win a game, all that changes!

It better come with a damn set of steak knives or no deal.;)

Then what are you doing on big footy?:D

If Charlie pulls out one or two more games like he did last week by the end of the year ………………. other players will take notice ….

Barring injury, CC will be a freak.

Do we even know if Shiel wants to come to Carlton?

If SOS says to Gaff we are trading pick 1 for Shiel, what would he do?

The domino effect of players joining has happened in the NBA due to how easy player movement is but I can't remember it happening in the AFL because our draft and trade process is all very short and sharp. Anyone recall the domino effect happening in the AFL before?

Both SA clubs are keen to land one of either Lukosius or Rankine.

I can see a big offer for Sloane from the Saints and North (plus maybe the Hawks). Big enough for band one compo.

That leaves Adelaide with picks 8, 9 and 15 (Melbourne). They'd probably have to bundle 8 with 15 and try and get down into the top 4-5 for Rankine.

Our best trading partner seems to be the Suns. Brodie and Scrimshaw want out apparently (and there are rumors involving both) plus they'll have picks in the 4, 5, 15, range (presuming Lynch leaves) plus 2 seconds and 2 thirds.

I'd also like to see consider trading out our 2 x 2nds to North or Sydney for their 1st. They'll want extra points for Thomas/ Blakey, who'll get bid on before their 1st comes around.

There is no way I'd be trading for Shiel this year. Warchest the shit out him next year when he's a free agent.

Hopefully we could end up with Lloyd, if they are in to Moore like reported, they will also need more picks.

Sorry, I don’t want to sound like a broken record BUT Ed Richards for the Bulldogs was excellent tonight. Why did we take LOB instead of him?
Is it because SOS is a bit of a snob and got sucked in by the boy who went to Geelong Grammar?
For the sake of our club let’s hope not...but I’m not so sure
