Ben King 201cm 79kg Sandringham/Xavier College
comparison - Eric Hipwood(Bris)
tall lanky forward, the King brothers have good agility and speed for big men, they also have sticky hands in the marking contests, taking multiple contested marks per game, i have not seen them get beaten or even well held yet, if the ball gets in their vicinity they tend to win it, which means they have not been tested to a high level or they are a class above their peers. when Vic Metro were struggling, Ben King was 1 of 2-3 Vic Metro players to lift and try and win the game, this speaks to his competitive nature, he has also kicked bags of 7 and 8 goals in school footy and kicked 12 goals in 4 matches for Vic Metro at the championships.

Izak Rankine 180cm 76kg West Adelaide
comparison - Chad Wingard(Port)
fast running forward/mid, uses the ball with elite disposal, hitting targets and kicking goals with ease, he was the best player at the championships by a mile, there are whispers he has an attitude problem and wants to stay in S.A. which is making some people a bit nervous about picking him up too high, i think if he didnt have any issues he'd be a lock as pick 1, but i can see him going at 3-4 with Adelaide making a play to get him? he also kicked 12 goals and was vital to S.A. winning all 4 games, i would go as far to say that without Rankine Vic Metro was likely to win the championships, he was that much of a dfference

Sam Walsh 183cm 74kg Geelong
comparison - Trent Cotchin(Rich)
an accumulator, if you're looking for a mid to average 30 poss a game, this is your man, he just racks up stats in the centre of the ground and plays the rover role, he is good at spreading the ball to runners and generally using the ball well, so basically a clearance and contested poss player, every now and then he can burst out of a contest or kick a goal, but he is more consistant rather than flashy. he won the premiership with geelong last year and also had a good Vic Country campaign last year, this year his Vic Country campaign was solid, but the team didnt do very well and the Geelong Falcons played 2 finals this year

Nick Blakey 195cm 80kg UNSW
comparison - Jack Riewoldt(Rich)
played predominantly as a tall forward, but also spent some time in the middle for the Allies, his desire to compete and win contests, even though he wasnt being fed good passes was a big positive, when he did win the ball he generally kicked accurately at goal, he is a competitor and has already named Sydney as the club he wants to goto, i can see him in a Swans jumper in the next few years taking over from Buddy as their spearhead going forward. The 1 moment that convinced me he was top 10 and even top 5 talent was when the Allies were losing and he went into the middle, he won 3 clearances all by himself, and generate goal after goal after goal to put the Allies in a winning position, then when he returned forward, the Allies struggled to get it to him, that convinced me of his high value to a team and his competitiveness to just not lose.

Jack Lukosius 194cm 85kg Woodville West Torrens
comparison - Jack Gunston(Haw)
seems to play a very open role, not really KP, but more like Gunston as a 3rd tall floating around on a lead ect, good kick for goal, good mark, can play many roles, in defense or as a forward, but mostly as a forward, is agile and can get around the ground and avoid tackles ect, theres a lot to work with, he could bulk up and be a KPP but more likely he will stay slim and strong similar to Gunstons body-type and be a high performing 3rd tall. The only knock on him i have is his mental attitude, he doesnt seem to have a lot of passion or determination in his play, but he does have team orientated mindset.

Max King 201cm 82kg Sandringham/Xavier - injured
comparison - Eric Hipwood(Bris)
similar story to his twin brother, except he is a tall forward only, he has better goal kicking numbers as he has trained and played forward for longer than Ben who was training and playing as a defender for years, his injury in his draft year has set him back a bit, but his brothers performances means he is still represented in a weird way, because whatever Ben does is an indication of what Max can do when he gets back.

Bailey Smith 185cm 82kg Sandringham
comparison - Darcy Parish(Ess)
busy midfielder running all over the field looking to win the ball, he has good speed, good energy and high endurance for the midfield action, he doesnt mind getting to the bottom of a pack or bursting through the pack to hit a team mate on a lead, because he runs around so much he can get tired and miss kicks, but in general he uses it well, theres seems to be a few clubs who are interested in Smith and he is one of the high quality top 9 i have on my list

Connor Rozee 185cm 79kg North Adelaide
comparison - Mark Le Cras(WCE)
medium forward who is a really good mark above his head, uses the ball cleverly, never seems to panic, moves around the ground with purpose, sets up goals and can kick the odd goal here and there, just watching him, even without playing a great game he seems a class above at times, playing finals in the SANFL seniors and is starring for North Adel, so can make the step up seamlessly it seems.

Tarryn Thomas 189cm 73kg North Launceston
comparison - Jordan Lewis(Haw/Melb)
tough tall mid, was an absolute star in the academy series, then got hurt and brought that injury into the championships where he played well but was a bit off, his last 2 games in the championship were really good and i felt we were seeing what he was really about by then, wins clearances and gets the ball moving forward when theres a lack of momentum, type of footballer to win his own ball, doesnt mind the tough stuff and can use it well when going forward.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TOP 9 /\ /\ /\

Ned McHenry 176cm 71kg Geelong Falcons
comparison - Toby Greene(GWS)
a player i think could play his best as a pressure forward in the AFL, but could also play as a flanker/mid depending on where he fits in best at a club, busy player who is competitive and knows how to win his own ball, uses it well and is impactful, he has been one of Geelongs best in their finals series this year and also was a star for Vic Country in the championships, should go first round somewhere, his height might be a slight issue, but i dont see him dropping past pick 20

Bailey Williams 198cm 91kg Dandenong Stingrays
comparison - Brody Grundy(Coll)
Bailey is the closest player to Brody Grundy i've seen, he is a aggressive tap ruckman, who can go forward and be a really competitive tall forward, with a great lead and mark, but its his almost midfielder like play that brings comparisons with Brody Grundy, he is a ruckman sized midfielder who can also go forward and play like a mix between Roughead and Buddy, he is a very unique player, surprised he isnt included in the top quality group of 9 or so, if he has a big Grand Final i think he and Rozee might force their way in.

Ian Hill 176cm 66kg Perth
comparison - Bradley Hill(Haw/Fre)
quick agile winger, who is the best young talent coming from W.A. this year, his assets are his speed, agility, quick thinking and ball use, has a similar style to Brad Hill and Jetta, so teams who are looking for outside speed will be looking to pick him up somewhere mid-late 1st round i would expect.

Xavier O'Halloran 186cm 82kg Western Jets
comparison - Josh Kennedy(Syd)
strong inside mid that also has great leadership and competitive abilities, very similar build and play style to Josh Kennedy from the swans, tends to win contests when the team needs a lift, has a mix of Kennedy/Hodge about his personality which im a fan of, probably needs to win more possession but he has all the tools otherwise and his impact per poss is pretty good, i expect him to go 1st round after being a standout for the Jets in the finals as well as being a player which impressed for Vic Metro

Zak Butters 178cm 70kg Western Jets
comparison - Hamish Brayshaw(Melb)
hard working mid, who can work through traffic and spread the ball, played well in the championships, was an impressive mover for Vic Metro, wasnt in the finals series so i didnt get to see much of his TAC Cup form, but based on championship form he should go anywhere from 15-30 in the draft

Bailey Scott 186cm 84kg GCSA (GCS A, GEEL F/S, NM F/S)
comparison - Zac Jones(Syd)
he was one of the Allies best, he was winning the footy in the mid and in clearances, he was floating forward kicking goals and did his best to cover for some lack of depth the Allies team had in their squad, he has an interesting decision to make who will he choose to goto as an academy member or father and son, rumour has it he will choose North Melbourne, but thats not confirmed, his dad coached at GCS so he might choose to stay with family?

Jarrod Cameron
180cm 69kg Swan Districts (WCE NGA)
comparison - Charlie Cameron(Adel/Bris)
another really good prospect from W.A., reminds me of Charlie in the agility and way he moves around the ground, he also has good jump at a contest like his brother, very similar player and with these natural abilities he should at least be a decent player at AFL level, the WCE should match the bid on Jarrod that might come in the 2nd round if they're lucky, it will alll depend on his determination to become an AFL player to how good he could be.

Xavier Duursma 185cm 71kg Gippsland Power
comparison - Adam Treloar(GWS/Coll)
line breaking midfield with decent use of the ball, good endurance and gets involved in the play all game, every time ive seen Gippsland he is one of the best players on the ground, he plays well and brings team mates into the game, i believe he should go first round, he was ok at the championships, but i think he has been better after the championships, i think that experience bettered his game

Riley Collier-Dawkins 193cm 88kg Oakleigh Chargers
comparison - Grant Birchall(Haw)
tall def/mid who goes in like a bull at a gate, throws his body into a contest and can win clearances and poss, has good speed and uses the ball well, has a lot of raw talent, tall, strong, fast, clean, uses ball well, all the ingredients should go late first round, if he can win more poss he will be a weapon.

Joseph Ayton-Delaney 180cm 68kg Oakleigh Chargers
comparison - Ahmed Saad(GCS/Ess)
the best small defender in the draft imo, elite speed, clean hands, good decision maker, uses the ball well and his run and carry from defence will create a lot of rebound for the club that picks him up, he will go late first round or 2nd round in the draft imo, i have him well ahead of McLennen and Quaynor, he will be a great pick up for a team looking for a counter-attacking weapon out of defence.

Toby Bedford 176cm 65kg Dandenong Stingrays
comparison - Marc Murphy(Carl)
one of the most competitive players in the draft pool, he has elite speed, can find the footy, he was one of the best for Vic Country and has been a huge presence for Dandenong this season, tough inside/outside mid who is seen all over the park, kicking goals, running through the mid and winning contests down back, very versatile player, his height might see him drop to the 2nd round, but whoever gets him, will likely get him for a bargain, has quality written all over him.

Jordan Clark 182cm 78kg Claremont
comparison - Zach Tuohy(carl/geel)
energetic half back flanker, provides a lot of run and carry out of defence, has been impressive in the WAFL and should be pushing for an AFL debut at his new club, he wasnt just making up the numbers at Claremont, he was a shining light at a WAFL club and should go first round this year in the draft.

Jye Caldwell 184cm 78kg Bendigo Pioneers
comparison - Scott Pendlebury(coll)
classy mover, inside mid that can also play outside well, is a tough midfielder who uses the ball well and looked classy in a poor side Bendigo, was tipped to be top 10 this year but has struggled with injuries including a couple of hamstring injuries and will probably slide to the end of first round, but he will be a risk, but if he works out he could be big reward

Jack Bytel 188cm 79kg Calder Cannons
comparison - Kyle Langford(ess)
tall tough inside midfielder who uses the ball well, he is the prototype for tall midfielders that clubs get very excited about, unfortunately like Caldwell he was highly rated and had his year ruined by back injuries, he will likely go 2nd round and again is a risk, but could be high reward

Connor McFadyen 190cm 88kg BLA
comparison - Grant Birchall(haw)
high quality utility, great in the air, either marking or spoiling, can run and carry and use the ball well, impressed a lot of people at the Championships putting in some great performances for the Allies, should go first or second round and Brisbane will be happy to match any bids on this talented kid from Queensland.

Sam Sturt 188cm 79kg Dandenong Stingrays
comparison - jarrad waite(carl/north)
highly talented leading, goal kicking and contested marking forward, great in 1 v 1 situations, came on the scene in August from school football into TAC Cup footy, where he kicked 15.7 in 6 games, 1 game he went off at half time with a minor injury, should go around the second round mark in the draft.

Ely Smith 188cm 86kg Murray Bushrangers
comparison - Adam Cooney (ex-western/ess)
reminds me of Cooney when he was playing at the dogs, tough midfielder, who can tackle, averages around 24 poss a game, uses it well, high disp efficiency, hard running and a bull of a midfielder, i wouldnt be surprised to see him go top 15, but he could also slide as he is a bit under-rated by a few, if he slides to the 3rd round he would be an absolute bargain for any team wanting to add to their midfield depth.

Very interesting take, I appreciate the fresh view.
Chayce Jones and Jackson Hately are two that I have in the top 15, I'm interested in seeing why you have them rated so low

Jackson Hately has the physique and possession winning ability, but he murders possession, im not a fan of these types of players, also seems mentally dull and jumpy at times, so Positives: physique, ball winning ability, aggressive. Negatives: poor disposal, poor footy IQ, doesnt do well under pressure, but he's good enough to be drafted.

Chayce Jones is inconsistant, ive seen an ok game of his and a pretty poor one, so maybe i need to see more of his good games, but are those good games against lower tier opposition? easy to be a big fish in a small pond, then get into a large pond and be less than average.

why do you still have Bytel so high?

you marked Hately down for his kicking yet Bytel remains so high despite not having anywhere near the production that Hately has had this season?

updates in the next few months

Thanks for this. I don't get to see the youngsters much but Ian Hill... is he a Billings 2.0?

why do you still have Bytel so high?

you marked Hately down for his kicking yet Bytel remains so high despite not having anywhere near the production that Hately has had this season?

ive liked what i saw from Bytel, whereas Hately has been a mixed bag for me, i think physically Hately has an advantage atm, but i think talent-wise Bytel has him covered.

fair enough. Bytel looked good last yr, he's been an enormous disappointment for me this year.

Riley Collier-Dawkins a defender? I may have heard it all

you know the modern game, Birchall cant defend for crap, but he's a great running/rebound defender.... more of a weapon out of defense rather than a spoiler, man-up on a forward and follow him around type, with spurts in the mid.

Wow, high rating of Cameron! He looks a jet, but maybe a bit high. I was thinking 40-50 he'd likely go.

Any reasons why Sydney Stack was so low? I rate him highly, was thinking he'd be a second rounder for sure. Was all Australian!

i rated Charlie Cameron top 10 in his draft year, i was proven right, i mean he got drafted as a rookie, i think Jarrod Cameron isnt as good as Charlie, but he is impressive, Stack im not as convinced, i see him going later in the draft.

i posted these early attempts on the hawk board and it got buried a bit

filled out the ladder predictor and so im going to use that as my first 50 phantom draft picks with academy points ect as a rough draft of the draft...

Carl, Bris, Stk, GCS, West, frem, adel, ess, gws, north, geel, wce, haw, coll, melb, syd, port, rich

Pick 1 Carlton - Jack Lukosius, i think Carlton would want a tall partner for Charlie Curnow up forward and competitive flexible tall forwards dont grow on trees, so i think Carlton will take the big sth aussie

Pick 2 Brisbane - Izak Rankine, i think he is the best mid in the u/18's this year, goal kicking mids are very valuable, this guy is the most likely to make an impact in the AFL if fit

Pick 3 St Kilda - Ben King, he's too good to pass up here, he is a little tall for a forward, more ruck height and we've seen that be a problem for Boyd/Schache/Wright/McCartin but then everyones looking for a Buddy/Lynch/Hipwood, this guy looked real sharp and good against S.A. so i'll back him in to make it at the next level

Pick 4 Gold Coast - Max King, gold coast if they lose Lynch and im taking it as a given at this stage, they will be looking for a replacement or just best available and the King twin is that

Pick 5 Gold Coast - Sam Walsh, i think with 2 picks they'll go for 1 tall, 1 mid and i think they will go for Walsh ahead of Smith on reputation and the likelihood country lads will stay more loyal to interstate clubs

Pick 6 Western B - Bailey Smith, they would love a good tall here, but theres only forwards and mids available so im guessing they will go for the best mid they can get here

Pick 7 Sydney - Nick Blakey (academy), so fremantle will bid on Blakey if the bulldogs dont here, Blakey has nominated the swans and they will use the pick here, they lose 619 points for the upgraded pick turning their pick 35 to the end of draft pick 53 to 61

Pick 8 North - Tarryn Thomas (NGA), fremantle again tried to snag a top end academy junior here, with the big bodied tasmanian mid impressiving everyone with his clean and crucial clearance play as well as his clear minded plays, it will cost north pick 29 to pick 39

Pick 9 Fremantle - Ian Hill, i think here Hill is 1 of 3-4 options all mids so Hill makes as much sense as any for the dockers a highly talented winger who has good evasive skills and was the standout for W.A. in the u/18 champs

Pick 10 Adelaide - Connor Rozee, adel will be happy to get a pick in the first round to secure a south australian talent, with rozee they have 1 of the best utilities in the draft pool, he can play taller than he is, just a smooth mover

Pick 11 Western B - Rhylee West(f/s), essendon will go for best talent available and that forces the bulldogs to bid for him, which they do here, it costs them pick 24 to pick 52

Pick 12 Essendon - Jack Bytel, essendon gets the last of the top end talent on offer in the draft

Pick 13 GCS - Bailey Scott (academy) GWS bid for scott but GCS take him here for pick 26 to pick 51

Pick 14 GWS - Ned McHenry, gws have been looking for pressure forwards and here is a good'un

Pick 15 Geel - Jackson Hately, i think they take Hately here

Pick 16 WCE - Curtis Taylor, wce like they're clean and skillful mids, he will help them rebuild they're midfield and backup as a flanker

Pick 17 Hawthorn - Xavier O'Halloran, i rate this kid highly, not just on talent, he will make a good addition to the mid/flanks

Pick 18 Collingwood - Zak Butters, i think this speedy mid will help add some pace to coll midfield

Pick 19 WCE - Jarrod Cameron (NGA), i think melbourne will bid here and force wce to make a decision, which they accept, it will cost them pick 32 to pick 59

Pick 20 Melbourne - Jason Koschitzke, they take the best tall defender of the championships here.

Pick 21 Port Adelaide - Luke Valente, another of the S.A. big bodied mids here

Pick 22 Richmond - Joseph Ayton-Delaney, taking the best available seems like a good strategy here

Pick 23 Carlton - Riley Collier-Dawson, another really good talent, this draft is pretty deep imo

Pick 24 Brisbane - Bailey Williams, bris taking this big bodied tall player who can play in any position on the field, but will probably have to land a key position in time

Pick 25 StK - Chayce Jones, busy tassie mid, 2nd tassie kid to be picked up, he was the 2nd best mid in the allies squad behind scott

Pick 26 Frem - Kyle Reid, one of the few good tall defenders in the draft

Pick 27 Adel - Oscar Chapman, this kid impressed me a lot, he's my smokey, havnt seen a lot of chatter about him, but he can play and adel will be stoked with another S.A. kid here

Pick 28 Essendon - Tom McKenzie, the running defender/mid from the northern knights will be happy to land at the bombers

Pick 29 Western B - Buku Khanis (NGA) gws bid here and wb accept, pick 52 gone and all picks gone to end of draft and a defeceit in points next year

Pick 30 Brisbane - Connor McFayden (academy) gws also bid here and bris accept it, picks to the end of draft and defeceit next yr

Pick 31 GWS - Tom Joyce

Pick 32 Geel - Lachlan Sholl, another solid pick here, still a bunch of good talent available

Pick 33 Hawthorn - Jye Caldwell, this mid could go earlier in the draft but as vic country had a poor championships i expect some of their talent to slide and the hawks will be happy to pick this kid up here

Pick 34 Collingwood - Luke English

Pick 35 Fremantle - Jason Carter, (NGA) next pick to end of draft

Pick 36 Melbourne - Fraser Turner

Pick 37 Port Adel - Tom Lewis

Pick 38 Richmond - James Rowbottom

Pick 39 Carlton - Xavier Duursma

Pick 40 StK - Luke Moore

Pick 41 North - Thomas Sparrow

Pick 42 Adelaide - Jacob Kennerley

Pick 43 Essendon - Mitch Riordan

Pick 44 GWS - Jesse Quint, bris dont bid for him (bris prob bids but im too lazy)

Pick 45 Geel - Mihail Lochowiak

Pick 46 North - Zane Barzen

Pick 47 Hawthorn - Angus Hanrahan

Pick 48 Collingwood - Braeyden Gillard

Pick 49 Melbourne - Matthew Walker gws dont bid (gws prob bid but im too lazy)

Pick 50 Port Adel - Riley Grundy

Pick 51 Richmond - Tom Medhat

the first 3 rounds of the draft, prediction on the 7th July 2018 (have to update with indicative draft order next time)
