Just think.

If Koch and KT were the infallible brainstrust everyone says they are, they would have called his bluff and let him walk to the Queensland Shitshows.

If he stayed, he had one year left on his contract.

Perform or GTFO.

And instead of the completely deserved GTFO he'd be copping in a fortnight, we're now chained to this Groundhog Day until 2021.

Well in, Port. Well in.
Nah, he would've milked them for a 6 year contract after his 11-4 start. We did well to get away with only 4.

This is bullshit. The players did an awesome job in the last quarter to hold on as long as they did without Dixon or Ryder helping them win the ball, and arguably our best ball user oh the night in Houston.

It was literally 19vs25 and we lost after the siren after Westhoff was pushed in the back as he was about to win the centre clearance from the final bounce.
This. This is why we are mediocre. Accepting any loss let alone this one does nothing to advance the cause. It is the difference between good and great

I don't know. Maybe picking Frampton instead of Sam Gray given the opposition were playing two ruckmen and our's has recent form in not seeing games out?
Pick two young rucks and drop S Gray and Ryder injured. Make them fight it out and also can rotate them through Grundy and wear him down (wishful thinking).

Understanding a match against the odds and accepting the loss are two different things.

Time for a massive realignment & clean out.

Ken should be sacked, but we can’t afford the financial hit. The incompetent board who authorised his extension should all collectively resign.

Boak is cooked, he’s our very own Nathan Van Berlo.

Ebert is running on fumes...trade him while he has a bit of value.

Either Frampton is good enough to carry at least 50% of the ruck load next year or he’s not. Ryder won’t last another season as a stand alone ruckman.

We desperately need Atley, Drew, Farrell & Marshall to all come on next year.

Make Jonas Captain, we can’t afford to appoint another Skipper with Auskick like disposal efficiency.

Meh. So glad we started with Sam Gray picked for a crunch game. Invisible as always.
We can talk about injuries at the end, but like so (so so) many of our losses, we should never have been in the position for fickle fate (and it’s never fickle in our favour) to step in.
We have a rare good first quarter and instead of rounding that first turn and putting the foot to the floor, Ken pulls back hard on the handbrake and let’s West Coast in.....
Exactly - this all defensive BS is never going to get us a premiership!
We continually leave the door ajar for the opposition to come back.

The moment Hinkley sent Watts down into defence at the start of the last you knew we were in store for a quarter of finger in the dike bullshit. We were never going to hold on and had to score but we just conceded all the ascendency to them and it was all over.
Once again, Hinkley all about defence.

Long term reader of this board - always have enjoyed it, but after tonight I felt I had to join because this is not going to end well and i needed to express my view. The above post is exactly how I have felt for some time. Hinkley 'owns' this list - a list who leaders continue to let us down in crucial moments, a list which cannot not hit a target 1m away by hand and 15m by foot. A list which continues to have 'gold passes'.
Oh how true - our skills are abysmal, especially by some of our 'leaders'; but they are never brought to account.

We went defensive after qtr time and scored 20 odd points in three quarters. So over this bullshit football.
Yep, back to the it's all about defence crap.

Game should have been over before the injury curse hit. Come out of the blocks and bang through 5 first quarter goals only to all but stop trying to score for the rest of the match.
If Bassett goes into the senior assistant role may god have mercy on our souls.
And this goes back to Andre's post - so many games where we have momentum, with a real opportunity to put the foot on the opposition's throat, and end up chocking ourselves instead!!

We had many opportunities to win that game, just like last week. You're making excuses
Every team involved in a game decided by less than about 5 goals can say the same thing.

It's not an excuse. It is understanding that the game at the top level is often decided by things like this. If you are a ten goal better team then you can say that you should win with the game stacked against you. We arent that team.

Ask yourself this. In that 11 seconds of the third quarter, if that was McGovern and Darling injured, do you honestly believe that West Coast would have held on? Of course not.

We were the better team, but not so much better to cope with the injuries and hence the brain fade mistakes of the last 80 seconds cost us the game.

The alternative is to play Westhoff and Howard against him which doesn't just mean we lose the rucks but our best swingman and tall defender are out of their positions. Pick Billy and we probably lose the rucks but no worse than if we'd used Westhoff and Howard. At the worst he can make Grundy earn his taps.

Get rid of Koch as chairman.
Six years now.
The cleverest guy in the room ain't so clever.
You reckon that weird looking campaigner who tried to spill your board is available?

You're right that they are a better team than us. We will never be good like they are if today is ok.

I think they would have actually if it were Mcgovern and Darling. After qtr time it was only a matter of time before they got in front. They are more disciplined and always run much harder regardless of the personnel. Every one of their players know what is expected of them.

Sure we had injuries that didn't help but the injuries didn't lose this game. Ebert takes that ball instead of over run it late on the forward 50, game over. Clurey takes an extract 15 seconds or puts it not to a 3 on 1 against, game over. Robbie kicks that goal, game over. We up some semblance of a defence in the last 90 seconds, game over. Good teams put up a good show and pat themselves on the back, great teams win. This team doesn't have the mental aptitude to be a great team.

Are you serious can you explain the continual lack of composure in close games ?
Why does Tom Clurey mark the ball on the 50 metre line and hold on to the ball for all of 4 seconds and kicks to Robbie Gray who is marked by 2 players why doesn't he eat up 30 seconds or chip the ball backwards when we are 8 points up with less than 2 minutes on the clock.
Clearly you don't think there is a problem in close games to suggest otherwise is absolute bullshit. A

Yes there's "a" problem in close games - "it" is the nearly four quarters worth of wasted and not-even-created opportunities that precede the final siren.

All of us hanging poo on Jasper this, Brad that, Tom the other and umpiring gaffe the next in the last quarter, IMO we're all perfectly correct but missing the point. Yeah fix any one of those things and we seemingly fall over the line for a "brave" win. So what?

We are the ones who consistently let luck become a factor. That level of consistency across so many games and seasons isn't a matter of luck. It's now culture.

Selection, development, coaching, good starts followed by drop-offs, failing to go on and thrash minnows, failing to keep the pressure on a decent opponent that we've got on the back foot, that inability to respond to an opposition who make changes to respond to us, etc. Then, after trying their guts out on bunch of 'game plan things' that may not come naturally, then, in the dying heat of a mad scramble to save things, folks make individual errors. Yes, some more than others.

Tonight wasn't about three blokes of ours and one "maggot" who all made errors in the last few minutes so much as it was about our bloody typical first half where we couldn't put enough space between ourselves and a weakened opponent. Once our three went down in the third we defended like crazy, but had no teeth up front to bite back. Tonight is not the night to question effort, that alone nearly got us over the line with or without the errors. It's the night to rue misdirected, wasted effort earlier, when we had the chances and the resources.

We can learn from individual mistakes, and where would that get us? Add a bit more composure in individual "moments" of last quarters, take some out, accept a few as the price of fatigue, and we're "up" to a consistent 4-6 H&A finish and rejoicing in "brave" losing semi-finals and the odd prelim like, say, North bloody Melbourne, the most irrelevant "finals-makers" of most of all time. We're not winning a flag with the Hinkley/Bassett/I-don't-know-who-else regime hobbling this group any further. Sadly, between Postgate and three players dropping today Hinkley just got an excuse and "get out of jail free" card that isn't good for anyone.
