Scott's only likes having vfl players with **** all senior games as back ups. It might put pressure on his pre season selected 22 to have a bloke with afl experience tearing it ip at vfl level, ****, he might have to drop an lmac/hrovat type!! Imagine that!

Amidst many comic beauties, one of the more memorable BF lines - Scott's 'preseason selected 22.'

Lol ya ****en plonker. This time last year Anderson was a small forward lucky to have another year on his contract, we didn’t know if Jacobs’ foot would ever be right again, Ahern was a complete unknown, Dumont was a 3rd choice inside mid, LDU was going to play 22 games and be an instant star, Walker was a skinny kid we had drafted literally 20 minutes previously who might take 3 years to be ready. And Polec wasn’t even a twinkle in the War Chest’s eye.

Yeah the midfield outlook has changed since we drafted Hartung.
I’m the plonka?? You think our list managers had no idea about the potential of guys like Jed, Dumont and Ahern??
And you think they weren’t into Polec 12 months ago?
FMD you are stupid. No wonder you kept missing the point.

I think they would have been amazed by Jed's development, thrilled by Ahern's 'comeback', and delighted that Gubby Allen discovered Port was underpaying Polak.

So here you’re saying that our list managers know what they’re doing. And a page or two back you said ... (checks notes) ... they don’t know what they’re doing.

You’re right, I must be stupid. I’m clearly too slow to keep up with you.

Nah man, our list management knew they always had potential so there was no risk one or more of them wouldn’t work out.

Nice try but wrong again. I said they stuffed up with Billy...or there’s more to the delisting. If Billy was a stop gap while Guys like Jed and Ahern came along then it was pointless getting him. If he was going to complement our midfield then we shouldn’t be in a position where we had to let him go because he was “unlucky”.

Of all teams we played the 2nd least amount of guys through the center square this year. We hardly have a logjam of midfielders.

Billy is a wingman, it’s not like we were trying a plethora of runners in that position.

You really are struggling with this aren’t you?

Surprised by this decision. We were playing our best footy earlier this season when Billy was up and running. It was no coincidence that his speed and ability to break the lines was providing something that we'd sorely been missing and screaming out for since Boomer.

Why would we delist him when we have a club jam packed with same same plodders? I can only presume that the club is confident we've landed someone like a Gaff or a Polek? Neither of which I'm confident about.

Thanks for your service Billy. You were fantastic for the brief time you were with us.

Not struggling at all. In your rush to gleefully pot everything the club does you haven't thought too hard about it. We started the season with a ton of unknowns about the midfield mix - including wings - and threw a lot of darts at the board. More of them hit than missed. Billy hit but it wasn't exactly a triple-20. We expect to have better options next year and probably young players with more upside.

Threw a lot of darts at the board? i cant agree with that we used the least players out of every team this year.

When the 'hard calls' were made on Petrie, Boomer and NDS, I supported it wholeheartedly.

My respect for Brads and the entire football department went up significantly at that time.

This call on Hartung? If the club fails to land Gaff (or some other genuine wingman) it will be time to pause and reflect.

Are there any other AFL teams trying to win premierships who play the game without genuine wingmen?

I remember when Dean Laidleys played the Boggler (Leigh Brown) on the wing. And Hansen.

Yeah, we laughed at the time.

Well who's laughing now?

:stern look

The legend of Billy Hartung grows by the minute.

Look, he was surprisingly ok, and I'd not have been bothered if he stayed another season, but **** there is a fair bit of mayo being put on his performances and capabilities.

This post kind of nails it. Yes we do need pace and endurance and de-listed 2 of our fastest, more endurance based players, but as the season went on i thought Billy's limits started to become more obvious.

FWIW - he was alot better than i thought he'd be. Surprisingly OK is a great description. And I thought we'd keep him and the term "unlucky" is a fair one. If there's a rookie spot available he'd probably be worth it but I doubt there is.

OK, I'll be specific. At the end of last season, before the draft and after Dusty/Kelly fell through ...

Known:
Cunners
Higgins
Ziebell as a mid
The fact that the top 5-6 in the draft were all mids
Gibson gone

Unkown
Whether Jacobs's foot would come good
Anderson
Whether Dumont could take the next step
Whether Ahern would be any good
Whether Garner would see much mid time
Whether Mountford would continue to develop
Whether J Williams would continue to develop
How much midfield time Simpkin would get
Ziebell as a forward
What we were going to draft after the 1st round

And that's leaving out Clarke whose natural position is probably wing, McDonald who we all expected would keep improving on his 2017, Waite and Wood who were able to play spells through the wing as mobile talls.

We then added:
LDU
Walker as a mid-forward
Hayden
Hartung

So there were about 19 players in the midfield mix this year and we used all but four of them. Williams and Hartung are gone, ironically the two fastest. If we don't get Polec or Gaff we'll just run Dumont and LDU on the wings with most likely McDonald, Wood, Walker, Clarke spending some time there.

Let's face it, Billy was indeed "surprisingly ok" but he averaged 17 disposals a game and the only teams he got 20+ against were Carlton, GC and St Kilda. It's fair enough to believe he was that far down the depth chart once Dumont stepped up and Walker looked the goods in his few games.

The unknowns were playing on the minds of all of us so I don't know why this is in dispute personally.

I can't believe that we've delisted Billy and kept Hrovat. I reckon that Billy taking on Hrovat's role would be an upgrade.

Presumably, this means that the team being massacred on the spread is now a thing of the past.
