Something has to be done about the West Indies no ball situation. It cannot be that hard to coach out of them, or discourage with fines etc.

I’ve made no secret of the issue I have with umpires, who are lazy and routinely miss no balls that don’t lead to wickets, and as such the bowler is oblivious to the fact that he’s doing it until it costs him a wicket. But a more professional approach to getting their run up sorted out would avert the problem.

Now england are on top - no coincidence that it’s the two best (IMO) batsmen aside from Root who have finally got them on the front foot.
Didn’t quite seem to be the same verve in the Windies aside from the middle session. They were very disciplined in the first though.

Better day for us but it didn't tell us anything we don't already know. The top order is pish and the strength, such as it is, is in the middle order.

How Jennings got a recall is beyond me. I know they only have a limited squad to pick from but christ almighty it was a desperate selection.

I'll be interested to see how our rejigged attack bowl on this wicket.

Probably a good thing for England to get 300+ this Test. Will be a good learning for the Windies batting order to have a bit of score board pressure for once in this series.

Journeymen? :thumbsdown::thumbsdown:

All three have performed very strongly at domestic level in the past couple of seasons and Jennings & Burns made a pretty good fist of their recent successful tour of Sri Lanka. Denly's call up was a well deserved reward for an excellent season or two (to be honest I don't think he looks terribly out of place either, has been some bloody good bowling this series).

Much of a muchness as to who gets picked out of the options available, there's similar flaws in each of the alternatives like Vince, Robson, Pope, Browne, Northeast... Whoever gets picked will be criticised and derided as a "journeyman" or bridge player. Unless it's the magical Hameed (their version of Renshaw complete with the same atrocious past two years at domestic level) who can do no wrong and is the hero to solve all problems.

I'm pretty critical of Australia at the moment but England's batting stocks are even worse. Does not help that they're going all in with the '100'. Denly does not even remotely look like an international cricketer and a couple of good seasons when he's nearly 33 just suggest a solid domestic player in a good period, not someone who's suddenly got the skills for higher honours.

I honestly think Vince is a better option then some of the players they have at the moment, his issues are similar to Harris' where he's prone to brain fades but he also kept getting picked when he wasn't really in good form.

For the Ashes, England need to consider giving Ballance one last shot. I know he's had his issues with technique but i think he's got the record to deserve a last chance given some of the rubbish batsman that the've played in the last couple of years. Guys like Malan, Jennings and now Denly (granted Malan played a good innings here in Australia but he was never up to it long term).

Also why would I call Ollie Pope a journeyman, he's 21 and has 5 FC hundreds, I'd slot him in for the Ashes as well if his form holds up. Someone else already mentioned it but Hameed isn't comparable to Renshaw. He averages 30 after 50 games and he's not far off being dropped to the 2nd XI if his form continues. Nothing to suggest he's not just someone who had a good season but once people worked him out he didn't have any answers, happens a lot in FC cricket.

Wtf was Chris gaffaney doing??? Check for the no ball immediately mate not when stokes is back in the dressing room

What did Bob Willis say about Jennings?

Getting stick on twitter for making personal comments about him.

Going to be funny when Burns and Harris open for England and Australia in the Ashes.

You've got an opener from one side sticking his teeth out while facing the ball and one opener from the other side sticking his tongue out while facing the ball.

Geez this team can be frustrating. Now they've dropped Bairstow.

Edit: That catch made up for it from Dowrich

I don't hate England but there's nothing like watching a good old England collapse after a solid platform.

Reminder that Johnny Bairstow Bairstow holds the record of getting bowled the most number of times for a player in this decade.

He got bowled again today.

That was seriously good bowling from Roach. Feel England are still ahead on this pitch but if they can dig in and make 320+ they'll be a good chance. Wouldn't want to be chasing much more then 170-180 here.

England stop mucking around with "total cricket" and finally pick a proper "fast" bowler and it's showing already.
