Nothing convincing about that display
Absolutely agree. That wry smile from Richo said it all, he knows what he saw. A lot of the same garbage he saw the year before.

Skills and coolness under pressure ought to have been a focus in the off season, and it seems like the players are a bit better at thinking through problems, but still no where near good enough.

Why the bloody hell was the roof open though? Talk about rolling out the red carpet to our Queenslander cousins!

I will get slaughtered for saying this but it doesn't look to me like Stuv is enjoying being out there, it's going to be a struggle for him this year til he gets a proper break and if I was running the place I'd let him take 3 months off and go overseas or something.

Ah well take the win and attack the Bombers with a better line up.

I feel like the fast pace and transition of the game this year will suit Hunter Clark, Blake Acres, Nick Hind and the like. Would like to see at least 2 of those guys getting a game. I love the commitment that Dunstan brings and reckon he gets whacked a bit too hard on here but if we've got Jack Steele and Seb Ross in there as well I'm not sure we can afford to have Dunstan at the moment when we've got some other options.

I'd like to see Acres come in for Dunstan, Brown come in for Wilkie and Marshal in for Pierce next week, you get the feeling Wilkie was getting a game coz Carlisle is injured and Brown is suspended but I think the other 2 bring better balance and form to the table.

In the final 2 minutes, I was surprised we weren't just getting into space and chipping it around for uncontested marks to play keepings off for the last minute instead of our trademark long bombs into packs.

Then again cool heads and strategy don't seem to have much of a place in this team.

concerning isnt it. especially considering we have showed we can do it, during this match and the JLT

i think the issue was no one was running to space to provide an option. they looked completely buggered.

Lets give the depressing talk a rest. It's Round 1 of a new game plan and the rust was definitely on show.

If it becomes a pattern, sure, heap shit on them.

Otherwise enjoy the win! We didn't get too many of them last year.

POSITIVES
The debutants (to varying degrees)
Matty Parker’s post-game wing thanks
Bruce

NEGATIVES
Pretty much everything else

Not a great start, but as George said, it’s only Round 1.

Also our duck and clearance work was atrocious we got undone by a midfield with vfl players and inexperienced youngsters for a chunk of that game(if not a majority).
Really got a headache regarding our ruck. How we couldn’t manage to grab an experienced ruckman from state league is beyond me and it will 100% cost us this year
Get dim hope hunter clark can live up to his expectation and coffield can transition into the mid cause we really need their disposal and run carry

I think our forward line worked fairly well for most of the game, and when you consider how inexperienced our backline was they weren't too bad (except of course for McKenzies last qtr which was woeful)

The issue clearly lies with our midfield though. They didn't get smashed all day but they went through patches where they were so bad it was almost embarrassing and they continued to let Gold Coast back into the game when we had many chances to bury them.

We've been running with the same midfield for a couple of years now and it's just not working. It's time to look at other options through there (Gresham is one we've added and he did some good things)

We looked much better going forward at times but as soon as the pressure was on we reverted back to the poor forward entries.

I don't understand why people are upset that Joyce and Wilkie stood out and were important today. They've been brought in to replace Carlisle and Roberton who play two really important roles.

The fact they played them well alludes to us having a good system in place, not that we're so terrible that a first gamer and an Irishmen stand out.

Just winning can have a good effect. Hopefully team spirit rises and we build some confidence. Rather be us than the teams that have lost. You have to give the Suns credit. We always have trouble with them. Quick and they have some highly skilled players. And being hot probably suited them.

But we have issues no doubt. A better Round 1 platform to build from this year than last that's for sure. Anyway...off to bed!!

Has anyone else gotten a similar vibe from last year where we expected to beat the lions convincely in round 1 and then just squeezed home and had a sucky season. Don’t want to be a pessimist and Ik Brisbane were good last year but still very reminiscent of last year and while there were improvements in our game still worrying

its a strange one, we were getting belted in there

but ended up winning clearance 46 to 40. contested possession 164 to 155. hit outs we were slaughtered in though!

Congrats on the win - exciting game at least. Both teams had opportunities to win.

Parker so dynamic, killed us.
Despite their inexperience your tall defenders clearly outpointed our tall forwards

Even though you were 'expected to win'
Don't know why the odds were so one sided - always thought it was going to pretty close.

Solid performance all round by the boys - congrats on getting the 4 points. Very encouraging performances from Wilkie, Parker and Joyce.

First half we showed some real flair and run - hope we keep seeing that all year. 2nd half more of a slugfest as the bodies tired from a REAL contest rather than match sim.

Some of you blokes are amazing - slight difference between practice and the real thing - especially if you throw 30 degree day in top of that.

Anybody notice Josh Bruce today - nah we didn't miss him last year - should have been traded.

Stop whinging and sing the f***ing song!!!!

Our pre season was 2 wins against more fancied opposition. Then we went into rnd 1 with our 2 best backmen out and arguably our best player a last minute inclusion ( Steven) after mental illness issues.
If anybody can find a negative in that win they can GAGF as far as I'm concerned.
GO SAINTS

Agree with your first paragraph but of all our tall defenders, Wilkie was far and away the best. Took plenty of intercept marks, delivered the ball very well over a long distance and did essentially nothing wrong today. He's about the last player I'd be dropping.

First game for the year, so take everything with grain of salt..

Positives:
- Bruce, 3 goals and game saving mark
- Parker, 2 goals and link up play
- Steven, has big impact playing half forward/mid
- Wilkie, intercept marking very good, we found robbo’s replacenent.
- We don’t blindly play on at all cost anymore, if we can control possession, and have more lead/mark transitions from back to front, even better.

Negatives:
- Ruck, Pearce is not competitive enough
- Clangers/skills, we made 77 errors compare to sun’s 59.
- Mckenzie, not a defender.. panics every time defending 1 on 1, were at fault for 3-4 goals today
- Long, lots of misdirected aggression, gave away 2 stupid free kicks..
- Midfield, we need more mids to link up play and contest ball winning mids..
- transition from back to front, still kicking long down the line lost of the time.

i think there are differences on last year. we have changed for the better, how much though, i'm not sure.

next two weeks will tell us.

we all know richo is shit. we all know he should have been sacked.

myself personally have no faith in the president, CEO and head of footy nor the list manager. i think we are being led by talkers, making it up as they go, easily moved from the critical path. they're out of their depth. but its what we have :-(

but i'm hoping i'm wrong and the next two weeks show a side building to success. hopefully today is the start of that.

Nah whingers have gotta whinge - its so pathetic.

First half was ok. Second half was poor.

Overall, give it a D+. Which is about the mark I’d give Richo’s coaching career so far as well. It’s just all so uninspiring. 1 step forward, 2 step back type of stuff.
Apart from the obvious positive by saying that what did he do wrong. And it’s amazing that Ratten had no bearing. Bet he would have if we won by 10 goals.

In a word: insipid.

No evidence whatsoever of any change in game style to last year.

It’s easier to single out the handful who don’t deserve to be dropped, but the following players truly don’t deserve selection in round 2:
- Dunstan
- Pierce
- Kent

Battle was a shadow of his former self as a forward. I’d like to see him move forward when Brown comes back in next week. We so often lacked the next link in the chain after Membrey marked on the wing, and Battle can play that role.

Joyce and Wilkie deserve to hold their spots.
