Find it weird how many have had them missing the 8. Better run with injury they are as good a chance as anyone for the flag.

I know essendon were bad, but still no one else this round has done what they did in dismantling an opposition.

Done without Kelly and Ward, surely people still think their right in the mix.

Their losses looked bad on paper, but in practice:

* Scully played 20 minutes last season.
* They could never find the right role for Lobb (and indeed he seemed a bit of a positionless player anyway - was never all that effective up forward or in the ruck)
* They could cover Shiel with Taranto/Hopper improving

And pretty much everyone on that list has missed somewhat lengthy periods through injury which has meant they never really put out their best side in practice.

I expect good things from them this season.

It was only Essendon

Have them behind Richmond and west coast. Still a shitload of talent and a deep young midfield. People forget it's 26/27/28 year olds who make a core of a club which wins premiership not 22/23/24. GWS are about to be primed

Biggest loss was Wilson 2 seasons ago leaving and and Williams doing his Achillies.

Yeah especially given how they set up their attacks at their best.

Kennedy's injury also hurt in this regard. Not a coincidence that when he came back in the team they started to look a lot better.

No hard feelings about losing Wilson as it was completely understandable. But we miss him.
Yeah his rebound off half back was filthy and cut teams up
His style is suited way more to GWS then freo. The Williams injury just really tested GWS last year.

Not everyone did and some tipped them for the flag.

But it's round 1. Look what they did to the Doggies in round 1 last year. If you made the thread before the game, it wouldn't be such a Knee jerk reaction.

Their 2016/17 sides were better on paper and fell short. 2018 they fell a little back and then lost Shiel, Lobb, Scully. Easy to see why people no longer have them as flag favourites. Hard to stay up for years on end.

But, the list is still very good. Coniglio, Ward, Kelly, Davis, Greene, Cameron... At worst they're in the 7-12 bracket, more likely 1-6.

IMO GWS paid too much attention to their own myth and hype last year and tried to win games by;
1) trying to run through the opposition
2) bombing it long into the forwardline 10m out from the goal posts
3) getting injured

But the problem is, in the AFL, if you don’t respect the competition you’re going to lose. And we did.

Then we went over to Adelaide, back when people still weren’t sure what the Crows were all about, and Leon Cameron sat on the bench with the players, and taught them R-E-S-P-E-C-T and then the Giants were up and about again. Beating sides with only 16-17 guys on the field. Injuries eventually did us in, but the final half of the season wasn’t too bad.

But not getting too carried away as The Giants started last year in exactly the same way...

Well I can see not flag favorite, but not making the 8 seems a bit extreme.

FWIW I had them 5th and Essendon 9th
