Lowest scoring opening round in 64 years

Yes they have. They haven’t painted it on the ground so they avoid the criticisim, but the mark now stands way further back, and the player kicking out doesn’t even have to kick to himself. He can run straight out and gain the extra 10m. The goalsquare now means literally nothing for kick ins. It’s only use is when you mark in there and get lined up straight in front.

Don't mean to be rude, but they haven't really changed it at all. They have simply created a greater exclusion zone for the opposition, much like the protected area around the ground when players mark the footy. And the player kicking out is in no rush to do so until his foot leaves the square. He is still protected by the exact same rules as before, the only difference now being he doesn't need to kick to himself and he gets an extra few steps of space to play on into once he leaves it.

Low scoring was symptomatic of a larger problem at hand- s**t skills. Never seen the ball being butchered so much as teams went forward. And under no pressure too. Also the lack of clean ball handling. Hopefully the Players will gain touch as they play more games because at the moment it’s awful to watch.

It's a horrible idea. it will result in three things.
Hack kick forwards at every opportunity making everyone look panicked and second rate.
The abolishment of one of the fundamental rules taught to juniors - 'First options'.
The whistle going all the bloody time because one thing that wont get worse are players ability to tackle, which is better than ever.

People talk about how great the 80's were in terms of how the game looked, and the 1980's had a lot of hack kicks forward to no one in particular.

Are there any new rules in Basketball or Soccer this year? NFL any new rules there? Is there any other sport who has a freaking committee of morons who's literal job is to change the bloody rules?

Congestion is caused by umpires putting the whistle away. Pay the frees that are there and congestion disappears

There was a tonne of free's paid on the weekend and surprisingly quite a few in front of goals. At times it was very frustrating at how involved the umpires were.

When have coaches ever wanted high scoring, free flowing, shootouts ? ... In my opinion, the tactics will be to ensure that coaches have a more controlled / low scoring affair (especially now that they have less contact with the players during the game) .. I reckon the AFL has shot itself in the foot with the combination of the new rules.

It's definitely still a small sample size.. But across the board, games were boring this week.

There is no rules committee anymore

How can a 2 sentence comment miss the mark so badly?

Soccer and Basketball have undergone dozens of rule changes throughout their history. Soccer changed the kick off to one player about 2 years ago and this season the NBA changed the shot clock on offensive rebounds from 24 seconds to 14. All sports do it, our fans just complain about it the most, I certainly didn't think any of the new rules made the games any worse. I think decreasing congestion is more important than boosting scoring.

Who cares? Plenty of good games and that is despite the worst round of skill execution I can remember. Once teams sharpen up the scoring will increase. I mean, how many gun players were dropping chest marks and/or couldn't pick up the ball this weekend?

Well said

Here's what I reckon

The new rules (particularly 6-6-6 and kick out rules) have contributed to overcompensation by coaches in establishing defensive responses

Within a few rounds the games will have opened up more

Oh that's right, we replaced the committee who's job was to bring in knee-jerk new rules with unintended consequences with one all-knowing guy who's job is to bring in knee-jerk new rules with unintended consequences. Bloody ripper!

Well, the new rules did nothing to enhance the aesthetic of the game at all. But remember this competition does not have many footballers, it has a lot of athletes. Difference! 3 ACL's in the first round alone does not bode well for the AFL injury tolll this year, playing surfaces are way too hard and have no give in them and Marvel stadium is far from "marvelous" isn't it? The SCG will be tested this week.

Nah, that didn't happen either

Speaking of knee-jerk, how about first seeking to understand....?

NBA is a really bad example for you as in the early 1950's the game was slow, with very little scoring and crowds were deserting the sport. Then though the powers that be at the NBA went for a truly radical rule change that changed the sport entirely, bringing in the 24 second shot clock rule, drastically increasing the speed of the game and scoring and making the sport much much more popular.

More scoring means more ads means more $$$ for broadcasters. These changes are driven by ch 7.

Perhaps the TV model is broken and the FTA channels need to work out how to get more money for fewer ads or the AFL have to accept less money for their product.

It's unacceptable that we are changing the game for these reasons.
So what they need are wider goals

and the 3-point line!

Other leagues don't seem to take issue with how the game is being played and change rules to try and forcibly change the fundamentals of the game every single year.

So much for the new rules allowing for 'free flowing, high scoring footy.' Hopefully this teaches the *******s at the top who keep munting the rules to let the game sort itself out. Wonder if they ever actually considered that good defence might be the cause of all the low scores?

The game has not sorted itself out. Things have only gotten worse, and the reason the new rules have not worked is that certain elements of the football public got very upset when the AFL suggested proper rule changes, and Gil ended up backing down and bringing in very minor changes that would not change much.

Need to bring in the rule Clarkson suggested last year, where if a player handballs to a teammate that teammate immediately loses all right to prior opportunity. That one rule won't make the game look much different but it will stop players doing 5 or 6 little handballs in packs and being happy with getting another ball up.

Why stuff around with team prior? Just get rid of the rule all together. If you take possession of the footy it’s the players responsibility to dispose of the footy legally. Too many rules.

Team prior means that players still won't be afraid to be first to the ball. Having no prior would mean players are always trying to make sure the other player gets it first.

I don’t think letting the opposition get first hands on the footy is a good starting point

NBA has had rule changes that fundamentally changed the entire sport, notably 3 point line introduction, shot clock introduction and hand checking.
