Disgusting that one of these lowlifes is an RFC member. Glad to see the club has taken decisive action and I'm pleased they are making the POS's membership reinstatement conditional upon an aboriginal cultural awareness and education program. Imagine thinking such a thing let alone posting it on social media when our great club has such a history and future embracing our amazing indigenous players...

Richmond suspends member for racially vilifying West Coast's Liam Ryan

Richmond have suspended the membership of a Tigers' fan for two years after an investigation by the AFL's Integrity Unit identified the person responsible for racially vilifying West Coast Eagles' forward Liam Ryan on social media on the weekend.

After being made aware the person who posted the offensive post on social media was a Richmond member the club moved immediately to suspend the person's membership for two seasons, revoking all their membership rights.

The post came to light after West Coast ruckman Nic Naitanui shared the comments on social media asking for the people making the posts to be held accountable and the Eagles' CEO Trevor Nisbett later held a media conference where he slammed the supporter's actions.

"We can not tolerate the sort of pests that make these disgusting comments. We need to continue to make strong stands against racism," Nisbett said.
Richmond released a statement saying they would come down hard on such behaviour whenever it occurred.

"Racial vilification has no place in our game, and no place in our society, and the club will continue to take strong measures to ensure there is zero tolerance to this behaviour."

The person responsible for the post will be required to take part in an Aboriginal cultural awareness and education program before their membership suspension is lifted in March 2021.

The AFL's inclusion and social policy manager Tanya Hosch said the AFL Integrity Unit would continue to investigate racist posts made on social media and, where necessary, refer comments to the police.
"Where the AFL can take action, we will," Ms Hosch said.

"However, we also know that social media platforms invite commentary and feedback, and the anonymous nature of the commentary allows for the worst aspects of the community to get a voice.

"We have to continue to fight racism by shining a light where and when it happens, by standing with the person vilified and attacked, and by ongoing investment in anti-racism education, communications and campaigns.

"We also need to remember there are people without the profiles and status of some of the AFL’s best players, who also experience racism every day and we know our players feel concern for this issue more generally, not just how it impacts them and their families."

Well done to the club for taking this stand against racial abuse. Maybe the AFL should revisit Eddie's atrocious King Kong gaffe about Adam Goodes.A ban on Eddie would have shown true leadership. He blamed gaffe on tiredness and painkillers! He received a slap on the wrist and carried on as if nothing happened!

Apologies Tiges, I'm not going to invade your forums - but that's such a good point that a "like" wasn't enough. The fallout from that was catastrophic for the whole game.

My beef is that the so-called Richmond fan is anonymous. Mr Anonymous was happy enough put a name to his racial taunts of the player, why does he then benefit of anonimity when called out and suspended. Let's see how he goes with the taunts about being a racist........ That would be a tougher and apt penalty and more would be learned.

unfortunately, if they really are racist, they'd wear that badge with pride

20-50 years ago perhaps but times they are a changing and protecting them from being called out publicly seems a bit soft on the perpetrator to me.

When you see the disgraceful scenes at the Montenegro vs England game where numerous England players were racially abused by the home fans, this shows how far ahead we in Australia at stamping out racism. Unfortunately there are still idiots that use social media for abuse.

It was great that the club acted so quickly to revoke the fan's membership for 2 years. My first instinct was that they should have banned the person for life, but as renewing the membership after 2 years is subject to that person doing an indigenous awareness course, it was the right call.

Ok my point is this guy copped his membership ban which is fair enough , but Eddie McChins said that stuff about Goodes on national radio and nothing happened to him and he’s a president of an afl club , is it different based scenarios on what ones standing in life is ie job etc etc , Or IMO should all be equal and McChins should have actually stepped down from his position years ago when it happened .

Two years is not long enough... we’ll still be in our premiership window and I want him missing out.
By comparison to how other clubs have treated similar incidents , it’s more severe . Can’t recall the south Aust offenders being suspended for 2y ,, correct me if wrong
2y is about right

2 years is a fair call. He may change his attitude in that time and then it would be unfair to exclude him.

If he does something stupid again then so long, too bad and thanks for coming with a life ban. Id expect the club or afl to make periodic checks on his social media account.

Pro life tip: if you cant say it to someone's face, don't say it online.

This.

No place in the game for any level of racism. Respect the player.

2 years is not long enough, wouldn't have disagreed with a lifetime ban. But glad the Tigers made a stand. Sadly this culprit won't be the last, but hopefully the penalties start to strike a chord......

Horrible getting on players twitters and ridiculing them,I have great pride in Maurice Rioli being a Tiger, the greatest indigenous player I have seen while alive on this planet.
