My theory is that the 6-6-6 rules have totally destroyed our game plan.

Pyke used to love having numbers behind the ball which would then leave guys like Laird free to play loose and stream the ball out of our backline. Fast forward to this year and suddenly Laird is now having to play a defensive role and we have no numbers across half back anymore and the flow on effect is that the half back run no longer exists.

And the reason why we had this run from defense gameplan is our stoppage structures are complete shit and don't allow for fluid movement from them.

So our only option to go forward is first to go backwards, win it off the half back line and shoot it forward. We can't do that any more.

If our midfield structures were competent and not instigated by a complete muppet in Campo then we wouldn't be in this strife.

The "played too fast" last week comment speaks volumes and we've been here before.

So a few times against Geelong we blundered forward and rushed kicks to their numbers. Did it against Hawthorn too.

Ok.

So... do we slow our foward movement down so that we can retain possession? If we do that... what then? We've retained possession across centre/half back. What now? Does it get easier to score?

Or... should we try to better retain our structure ahead of the football so that we can go fast?

It happened under Craig, Sanderson and now Pyke that we got spooked by turnovers so decided to be "smarter" with the football - slow it down, keep possession. All it succeeds in doing is making us go into our shells and become completely toothless.

North's defense leaked like a dam wall with a 10 metre wide crack.
We had something like 12-13 inside 50's for 11 shots at one stage.
We hadn't gone forward much compared to them but we scored easily and they kicked behinds.

North had a lot more opportunities and were better even up to that stage.

They tightened that up, they defended and hunted much better, they stopped kicking 1.9 or so themselves and kicked some goals..
