Smith to the midfield and Gibbs to HBF ..... but i’ll continue to push for Sloane to go back to DEF now too

Gibbs would have to be rotated to the midfield in order to protect Smith and draft picks, we cant have player cooked by the end of the year and reducing their playing career. Just my opinion on the issue.

I think there’s a lot of lunacy surrounding the age of players personally. 26-29 is a player’s prime. Keath, CEY, Greenwood were all in the first year or two of their prime. By saying they won’t be a part of our next flag tilt, you’re saying that we won’t be contending for the next 4-5 years.

I would suggest that a big part of the reason we won’t be contending is because these players have left. Greenwood is rated as a top 40 player in the league by the official player ratings (the ratings are flawed, but he still does some important stuff when out there and played in the correct position), CEY established himself as a top 5 mid at the club in 2019 and it was repeatedly proven that when he was out of the side we got beaten up in the middle, and Keath will easily finish in the top 3 in votes per game at the B&F. In return for all 3 of these guys, we’ll get the square root of fu** all.

Jacobs is no loss, Jenkins is no loss, Betts is a big cultural loss but he only had 15 games left in him anyway so not fussed there, and if someone like Knight leaves, nobody will even notice.

Laird and B Crouch to me would be interesting. Both would fetch a nice price, and Laird certainly didn’t live up to that price in 2019, while Brad has major injury concerns. Tough to trade either, but cashing in prior to them potentially scooting out the door of a sinking ship in free agency is tempting.

And saying “if Lukosius requests a trade he’s gone” is heavily implying that he MIGHT do it. It’s also incorrect not just for the reason that there is 0 chance of him doing it this year. He’s contracted and 19 years old so he’s not going to sit out a year if they refuse to trade him. Just ask Bryce Gibbs and Tim Kelly.
You are correct, I don't see us contending for 4-5 years.

Greenwood is excellent at what he does, so is Keath, and I like them, but they both will be 31 at the start of the 4th year. If we were still around the mark now, absolutely we should keep, but I'm happy to trade them while they have some currency so we can get some younger talented players that will be 22-24 at that time and hitting their straps. Greenwood has major injury issues that limit his usefulness as he rarely plays more than half a season. CEY has some flaws to his game that definitely still apply, but he did step up this year and improve. Realistically we need more speed and clearly the club has prioritised Crouches and Sloane as our mids over him. Keath is better than Hartigan, but harto costs less and is worth less in a trade so will be a temporary fix until one of the younger players comes through. Doedee will play as well.

Luko did refuse to sign a contract extension with GCS earlier this year, so he MIGHT. Not likely though as it's a shit bloke thing to do. Next year maybe. Who knows we may be less of a rabble by then too.

Throw Gibbs in the midfield. He is cooked.

I cant see it ever happening but if it did, we would need to nurture their development so they are well prepared in 2-4 years time for the next Victorian Fairytale.
I think (i.e. hope) a new (senior assistant) coach will do wonders for Bryce. He was good in 2018 and if all the off field stuff can be settled down, there's no reason he can't return to where he was in '18.

You know what s**ts me about AFL.com.au?

they hardly have articles anymore.

it's all videos of people i don't care about telling me things i don't think are true.

I don't want to have to put headphones on to hear rubbish, write it down so I can quickly skimread it between work assignments, not so i have to stop and listen and watch a stupid 5 minute video of idiots.

15 likes for a throwaway opinion?

there's a groundswell of opposition!! a movement!!! a REVOLUTION!!!!!

Its an interesting scenario for the Suns, do they want to be competitive and play finals sooner and mean something short term by getting the Crouch bros for a solid 5-6 years or do they take the draft route and risk it all and end up losing those players to Victoria in 2 years time.

Am I the only one hoping we can extract a future 2nd rounder from someone in this trade period? A bit worried about putting all our eggs in one basket (this years draft) and it's nice to have some currency up our sleeve for next year.

Also... David Mackay.

Look if the last few trade periods have told me anything, it’s that a lot of rumours, no matter how ludicrous they might seem, have some truth behind them. There was smoke around May, Hogan and Wingard for a while last year, I didn’t think any of those deals would happen until they publicly requested trades. The same will happen with Daniher this year. I wouldn’t be surprised at this point if Brouch goes down a similar route

Matt I’ll give you, I think that’s all hot air because the media thinks the brothers are tied at the hip
You know i keep Brad every day .... very happy to ship Matt off .... unless we put a lot of speed around him

That means you can’t play Sloane and M.Crouch in the same midfield

yes i agree .... but i think Gibbs should be part of the 2nd string midfield in rotations

Value-wise, Matt and Brad for picks 1 and 2 (Rowell and Anderson) is a win, however I’d be scared that we’d be going down the Gold Coast/Carlton route of investing heavily in youth without putting very good, experienced bodies around them

Once Sloane gets tagged, who do you rely on?
Perfect chance for Gibbs to step up. Milera has got size and is no spring chicken

We’re going to have a lot of 2nd and 3rd round picks .... surely we’ll bundle them up

It's also interesting to hear Craig Cameron saying they see Lukosius as Half Back flanker. I wonder how he feels about that?

Barrett clearly doesn't look at club lists before he runs off at the mouth, Port have no small forwards coming through......Boyd Woodcock is a very, very good natural small forward prospect Purple.
Barrett is a dickhead .... and that maybe understating him

If we trade Matt & Brad for picks 1 & 2 then we're also putting ourselves in the box seat for pick #1 in 2020 and possibly 2021 as well. It would definitely create some short term pain, leaving us with easily the worst midfield in the AFL - but the longer term upside would be significant!
We lose any of Brad or Matt and we consign ourselves to bottom 4 for the next 3-4 years, and we start losing players we want to keep.
They are players you build a good midfield around, Milera, Jones, McHenry, Pick,3 build a midfield, Even Game time into Wilson and Pohokle will help us
But Lose one or both Crouch brothers and we will be a basket case for years.
What we should be looking at is pushing to get a 2nd pick around 8-12 to get Kemp.

Gibbs had his chance to step up this year and went largely missing and Milera still has doubts about his ability to win hard contested football. We're talking losing 2 players that thrive on winning hard contested footy along with CEY and Greenwood who are cut from the same cloth.

I totally agree mate but can’t help but think...pick 2 and Luko is bloody tempting

The $300k or whatever Mackay is on is nothing in the scheme of things.

Look at what is going off the books this year (approximates):

Douglas: $350k
Jenkins: $700k
Betts: $500k
Greenwood: $200k ($400k if we retained)
Keath: $200k ($500k if we retained)
Otten: $200k

Thats over $2m ($2.5m if you assume we had money aside for those players).

Assuming we replace with all rookies at minimum wage ($100k approx) + Frampton at $200k
We're left with $1.2m per year left.
Time to renegotiate some contracts and front load them so we have big cap space to recruit methinks
