Bruce and 18 for 13 and 32?
I suspect 18 goes to Port for Howard, although pick 18 might get used on any Mead bid so Port may try and trade up.

They'd have to match with six but any points surplus would net them an extra pick later in the draft.

Likely Essendon has pick 5 - they need a big bodied mid.
Ah right, cheers - I clearly don't understand the system like I thought I did!

Given that, Giants will want to move the pick higher right to get it in before the bid?

The 20% discount means they wouldn't need to match with pick 6. A bid would need to come at pick 3 for that.
They would lose pick 6 though, as the points would be taken from that to match the bid then the leftovers would see GWS slide back into the draft in the third (or whatever it equates to) round.

Don't think it works like that. If someone bids at 5, they have to use their next available pick (if they match) and get lower picks back as change.

That’s why Sydney did their shady deal last year, right? Traded out their pick in the 20s for a future pick, used their now-next picks for Blakey, then traded back in to the 20s after the deal.

We can hate all we want but this was a genius move by Sydney Swans.

Also GWS keeps racking up super early draft picks. I say good on them, beautiful trading and list management.

Yep - the AFL has now closed that loophole though.

Simpson sucks and doesn’t fill a need. No thanks.

And I’m not interested in 13 and 32 for Bruce and 18.

If I’m freo, and st Kilda don’t include their 2020 first (which it sounds like they won’t), I just keep hill, the way geelong did with Kelly. Worked out ok for them.....

Can’t see how the deal gets done without the 2020 first because without it freo are accepting a pic that just gets burned on Liam Henry when they wanted to take 2 kids early and then use later picks on a Henry bid

Presume the St Kilda 2020 first is well and truly off the table. Don’t think St Kilda will put themselves in a position to sabotage a potential Ben King deal. Could be a stalemate this one unless Fremantle want a player. Acres is always linked back to WA. Maybe pick 12 + Acres + 2020 second?

Not sure. Felt like pick 6 was about on the mark

Our 3 x 3rd rounders equal 839 points.

Some teams need points - GWS (they'll have nothing after the first round), but Hawthorn, Port & Freo have second round picks
Hawks pick 30 (629 points)
Freo pick 26 (729 points)
Port pick 29 (653 points)

I would hope we're talking to each of those three about pick swaps.

I thought what freo was asking for was massive overs, I too thought pick 6 was about right.

I agree saints won’t use their 2020 first.

I think even accepting 12 is a risk because Henry has been consistently rated in that 12-20 range. So rather than getting the 5th and 6th best kids in the country and Henry now it has the potential to be:

Hill for 12 and 18 (Henry) at the absolute best case scenario

Two of those thirds for a GWS future second even? Still think we can/will get a deal done with 32 and those three third rounders to bring Keath and Bruce in whilst keeping pick 13 for the draft

Honestly I don't know why St.Kilda is so confident about getting Ben King.

I heard Shane Wakelin interviewed on SEN a few weeks back and he said that getting traded away from his brother at St.Kilda was the best thing that ever happened to he and his brother developmentally.

As a twin I understand the security that you feel having a brother next to you for life's challenges, but more so the importance of forging your own paths through life as you get older.

I think after two years of living separately Ben will realise this and I wouldn't be surprised for him to try to move to any Melbourne team other than St.Kilda.

That's my take anyway.

A question for you, Fronk.

IMO Saints have been too cute splitting pick 6 (a fair trade) and Freo may well Cats style say we'll keep our contacted player Hill.

Meanwhile, if the Blues' priority is Papley for their first pick then perhaps the Martin trade to Cralton is not looking good.

So to my question: if you were the player manager for Hill and Martin, what would be your strategy for each?

Fremantle really doesn't need to trade him. His value isn't going to be any less than it is now next year either.

What value does a deal of 13 and 43 for bruce and 18 give to bruce?
The value is there but it's sort of irrelvant in this situation. It's all dependent on who we are targeting at the draft. If the player we are into is expected to be there at 13 but not 18, then we wouldn't really entertain that deal.
