Think the way the nomination regs are worded is that in nominating for the PSD, the player is agreeing to play at whichever club picks them. Don't think there'd be much hope for him taking legal action against Melbourne for picking him. Maybe he refuses to sign a physical contract, but if that's the case I don't see why Melbourne would have to pay him.

He could, of course, just roll with the "mental health" leave of absence and there is sweet FA anyone could do about it. Too big a bear for journos to poke.

I did actually answer all those specific points you just raised and referred to the specific individual rules to back up my view, if you refer earlier in this thread.

This will never stand up - Melbourne won't pick him unless he agrees to go there.

Say Melbourne are interested - they have to invite him to do a medical at their club. Say Martin refuses to do that medical. Melbourne can't really progress much further beyond that.
Doesn’t matter if Dees are interested our offer will blow them off the park... and again i repeat Martin will be a Carlton player.

I don't really understand why we delisted players prior to the trade period.

The only conceivable benefit is to give the younger players (e.g. Kerr) the best possible chance to get in the eyeline of other clubs i.e. a goodwill gesture. No upside to the early delisting of Thomas. Going into trade period with 7 senior vacancies was no better than going in with 0. Trade first, delist second, like Hawthorn do - from the outside, it just looks like common sense.

Not going to get into a long involved discussion about Daisy but I didn't see any indication that he was looking old or slowing down and BTW what does that say about Eddie who is older?

I'm a big fan of the old adage that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush and who was the last DFA we picked up that was worth a damn other than Wright and that was under very different circumstances than ours at present?
Fair enough, I thought Daisy played well and was solid in his position but we have to find improvement.

The potential DFA's this year look more credible than previously. Newnes is not flash, but barely misses games, runs all day, has better stats than Daisy, and is only 26. I think that we could use a few players with mature bodies and an ability to play AFL for three years or so while #9 develops. Statistically he is better than Lang, Fisher and Dow so would also lift the bar in team selection.

Just don't think Daisy would play AFL in 2020 if we are improving.

AFL could potentially ban us from trading like they did when the Swans followed AFL rules but upset the AFL's plans for Buddy.

They do make it up as they go.

Not really. COLA was a concession to offset the higher price of living. It was intended to "bump" up every players contract a little.

Instead Sydney used 20% of their TPP cap on 2 single players of their ~39 squad list. Had they not backdated those contracts it would be more like 30% year to year.

They did it to themselves.

The apology was from the AFL - not quite Gil but close. Ultimately it means we get Martin for free and keep our picks, but as a reasonable & fair trading partner, it wasn’t our preference. We are always happy to pay a fair price.

They argued a future 2nd and 3rd were useless to them given the concessions they’d received, not bothering to consider that they could be packaged to move up. Truly bizarre behaviour.
This is what I haven't been able to get my head around the last couple of days.

GWS have been doing this for years. Packaging up picks and giving way overs in value to get higher up the draft list.

For GC to not even contemplate this is rather perplexing.

Rubbish.

We put in a reasonable offer.

Was more than the cost of any of Langdon, Greenwood, Bruce, Keath, Aish, Ah Chee and more.

Not our fault GC had unique WANTS and demanded we structure the offer to suit them...

Yeap, absolutely bizarre

Tin Foil Hat Time.

GCS and CFC planned this together.
GCS play hard ball in trade week and we hold firm.
We do the deal mentioned to get him delisted, at a lower cost than a trade would have.
We get him as a DFA. No risk, no fuss.

Carlton get their guy for unders. Insiders come out and says SOS is still the man (thorough, firm but reasonable, etc) so no hit to the reputation.
GCS look tough as a warning for St Kilda and Crows for when they come for Luko, Rankine, King, etc, and still get something for Martin.
I'd like to think this but I think GC and the AFL are just a*seholes.

We obviously put a contract in front of Martin I hope we don't modify it. This is what we promised so that is the offer. If Melbourne want to match then let them. Silly to pay extra to scare them off because in reality he is not likely worth extra.

That's why GWS made it to the Grand Final and GCS made a grand f***up of it.

They probably feel it's better to send Lukosius and other clubs a message that they won't be pushed around as much in the future. That's more valuable than a couple of draft picks to them.
