List Mgmt. Pick 9

Richmond also took Daniel Rioli at #15 & Jack Higgins at #17 but at #9 it would be a bit high for a small fwd

True. Player would probably need to be able to play further up the ground from time to time and be more involved. Probably why papley is valued highly.

Guys that can kick or create goals are important, doesnt matter how tall they are. Smaller forwards also have the added benefit of stopping the opposition by creating pressure.

Carlton needs speed, agility, run not only for ball in hand but for when we don’t have the ball. We can be cut up badly when not in possession unable to apply the necessary pressure. Another big midfielder won’t help with that. (Stocker, setterfield, Kennedy, Dow will develop for inside role)

With regards to Kemp though, he does seem a little unique with the speed he possesses.

Re: Kemp’s knee:

I have read research consistent with Opine’s point that after two years risk levels are low.

The hypothesised reason comes from biopsy studies showing it can take that long for the graft to ‘take’. Minimum is 9 months. It’s why coming back soon is insane.

As to why they come back after a year: I don’t remember the stats but it’s something like 3 percent chance for anyone to do a knee, and 10 percent for those who have done a knee to suffer a recurrence after a year. So on the math 9/10 don’t. So they take the punt basically. It’s almost back down to the 3 after 2 Years.

I don’t want to jinx the boy but it’s why I’m so happy Setters got though the season. He will be 2 years in Feb.

If we drafted Kemp I’d see no value in trying to get him to play at all next year. He did it in July. Take longer. Any club who takes him should take longer.

There was also something that was posted on another site (richmond site) after Rance did his knee by a guy who is actually a doctor in this field saying that the age of the player also makes a difference and how mature his body is and how much training he has had over the years that with mature muscle around the knee it was seen as less of a risk to come back in 12 months than a 18 year old kid. Not sure how accurate it may be but Rance was ready to go start of finals 'if he wanted to continue' but he decided he didnt want to risk both another injury and what it might do to the moral of the team.

Split 9 with Geelong 17 and 24 get Martin for free .. means pick 4 worth stocker and two more ..
I would like to see us trade pick 9 to G.C. for 15 and the Suns delist Martin so that he comes to us as a free agent without "risking" him in the PSD or the National draft. G.C. end up with picks 1-2-9-20 in the draft, we get 15 & Martin..........but Cochrane would probably blow a fuse if SOS tried to get that done...........

Seriously though how many really good small forwards don’t or can’t play up the ground? Betts is probably one but he is too good to be doing that anyway. I think people overlook this when thinking about drafting a ‘quality’ small forward high in the draft.

No way....we are certain to get Martin in the PSD which is essentially pick 100 in the national draft. We keep 9 and use it on the best 18yo.

Spot on. If we take him we do not plan to let him play until 2021.

Could we split pick 9 with someone with 2 picks in the teens and get
Robertson/Rivers
And Dylan Williams who was a top 10 pick before battling injuries this year. Could play that flashy HF

I'd love to see us split 9 with say Port (who're supposedly keen on Stephens) and take Luke Jackson and a small forward (first round too early). If he's projecting half as good as Grundy, he could be worth it.

It would mean TDK may never get the full time ruck that we're projecting him for in time. What I've read on Jackson though is that he could be ready for time in seniors as early as 2020, with the added bonus of him being keen to play a hybrid role.

Could see him and TDK/Pittonet co-existing. Hell, Tigers just won a flag with big men.

If Kemp is sliding and we are intent on taking him I wonder if we would consider trading 9 (+2020 2nd?) for 14 + Geelong/WC 2020 1st or Brisbane 16 + 2020 1st.

You could bookmark the future 1st for Papley and leave open our 2020/2021 1st round picks to go after Wines or another mid while still drafting the same player.

Almost no chance Kemp slides to 14. Odds are we'd do the swap with Geelong/Brisbane and they'd take him at 9 themselves.

Trading down is a good option to have if players like Kemp/Ash/Flanders are all gone by 9, though.

So a midfield of Danger, Fyfe, Cripps and Bont would be shit as it would be too tall????

Don't think so....

If Kemp is elite and available at 9 (and we Are happy with the knee) then he is definitely an option IMO. But really hate the Doc situation (missing 2 years) so understand the concern.

The good thing is after CGS, there are more than 7 good options available to us including Kemp, Robertson, Serong, Ash, Young, Stephens and Flanders. All are capable of improving our team.
How do you think a midfield of Danger, Fyfe, Cripps and Bont would go defensively??

When sos spoke about pick 10 sounded like we wouldn’t be trading it. Sounded enthusiastic about quality of player available there.

From reading about draft there does seem like there’s roughly a top 10 that are better prospects than the rest. May not want to trade out of that.

Don't think the AFL sign off on such a one-sided trade, even if it does help GC. It sets a precedent.

Pick 9 for 15 as an isolated trade makes no sense. Doing it to "bribe" a club to delist a player after the trade period is a bad look.

Also, GC can **** off. No favours for them. I'd be taking the long memory approach now and taking every opportunity to target their out of contract players moving forward. Even if we don't get any, blow up their salary cap as much as possible. Have a crack at Fiorini and Harbrow (FA) next year. Not much on offer the year after, but 2022 has a nice list of targets - Ainsworth, King, Rankine, McLennan, Brodie and Miller (FA). If we're "successful" at that stage we could cause havoc for them.

The important factor here isn’t really height. It is speed and agility. If you have a 190cm + mid with the same burst speed and agility as a 180cm one - you take the 190 every day as they should have the advantage of reach and marking.
While true, how many 190cm+ midfielders do you know have the agility or burst speed of Marc Murphy or Zac Fisher? I can't think of any at all.

Finn McGuiness was sub3 in 20m sprint test and runs 800m alright (plus 2nd in 2K time trial with 5.51). Will be interesting to see how this 190cm /80kg midfielder goes breaking the lines on a repeating basis...

I hardly know anything about the top players in this draft.
But if we use our pick (9 or 10?) and not trade it, I feel confident we'll get a very good player.
Who knows who that will be as it is out of our control due to all the picks before ours.
What I gather, though, is that we'll do alright with one of:
  1. rowell
  2. anderson
  3. young
  4. serong
  5. green
  6. ash
  7. flanders
  8. kemp
  9. stephens
  10. robertson
  11. rivers
I would like to know if anyone on here would add/delete any names on the above list?
