Newnes saying the fitness levels coming off a break being mentioned again.

I don't take too much note of what ex player's say, but it seems to be that our training standard for the get go aren't too crash hot.
What the hell do Carlton know about successful culture? They've been irrelevant for 25 years.

Natural that he blows smoke up the new teams a$$ considering he just moved to them.

One thing that is alarming and add this to the Bruce comment's is the intensity in training with both clubs being higher. Bruce stated that they were focusing more on skills early in the pre season (need to be back in good shape for this) and now Newnes saying the fitness levels coming off a break being mentioned again.

Training not being up to standard was the first thing Lethlean mentioned when he got to the club. Part of his rationale for bringing Hanners to the club was to improve training standards he said.

What's the need for players to compare cultures and standards. Honestly no need for it.

Promote yourself, promote your new club but no need to make your former club look like a shit hole to please others especially if you've mates who still play there.

Dunno why we're being so defensive, it's good honest constructive criticism. I would think the players would be very interested in hearing it. Added incentive to make sure they are maximising their opportunity.

Note the part where he says that he was surprised how much the Carlton fans really get behind their players. There's some constructive criticism for us, hope you guys can take it without getting all pissy.

LOL Newnes.

Was in the leadership group for many years so says a lot about his leadership if training standards were poor.

Apparently can’t find one player not doing the right thing. Perhaps he missed the media release about the Silvagni brothers, drinking whilst injured.

One of the most overpaid players for output in the league for the last two seasons and then when he is offered a deal commensurate with his performance does a runner.

Don’t let the door hit your arse on the way out.

Cheap shot at ex teammates and the club.

If he really felt that way about standards, culture, so on. Why didn't he step up, Why didn't he make an effort to create a change? Why not speak up when he was with us about this.

What, you don’t think we get behind our players?
Probably the most loyal ( some might say stupid) fans in the league based on our unsuccessful history.
And you don’t think that Blues fans have their scapegoats?

And no, I’m not pissy, but I hardly think that comment is constructive criticism. He’s just taking a swipe at the club, and quite frankly I don’t really care. He could, however, learn a little from GOAT Acres and the graceful way he left the club - he had a lot more to complain about considering his last minute exit and the fact that he didn’t really want to leave at all.

I spent years on here defending Newnes as being injured/playing a role for the team/etc.. but ill admit I was wrong now. He can get ****ed as far as im concerned.

You know why Carlton looks so good to him? Because his own standards are lazy and shit and so was his football.

Both us and them have f all flags between us in that time. They are no more relevant than we are. Anyways this isn't about us v Carlton, it's about the sub par standards OUR club has had over the last 8 or so years and to be quiet frank have been bloody pathetic.

Hopefully now that a clean out has happened we can actually be relevant to the football world and actually aim for finals.

I don't think you quite got where I was coming from. How can Jack Newnes bascially say Carlton have their heads screwed on when it comes to the football program and all the players are all coming back super fit, knowing what it takes. What would Carlton know about success.

It's not about us vs Carlton at all, it's not even about us. He reckons Carlton have a better idea than we do and that is very funny.

I dont think he was lazy - but definitely an average footballer who Richo held up as example of excellence. He was right in Richo's zone works hard, chases and pressures but turns the ball over 50% of the time.

To add to other statements by Bruce, Steven & Newnes being so unhappy at the club, just highlights how depressive and dour the atmosphere was under Richardson. But now we have Ratts and the sky is blue again!

of course newnes doesn't know who's come back underdone, he's just got to the club! at the saints he woulda spent the off season partying and travelling with the playing group, watching stuv throw down a six pack for breaky, acres eat a small village worth of lamb kebabs after a big night out, etc. At carlton everyone's new. Also they're young so they can't get fat even if they want to (unless they happen to have diabetes and are a number 1 pick)

Well he may be able to say it as he spent the last 8 odd years with us and now has a new look at how another club works and maybe just maybe Carlton have finally got their act together.

Our football program has been a shambles the way it has run and the leadership we have had or actually lack of over the last 3 or 4 years.

Now things may have started to change this off season with Ratts In charge and the people we have signed to the club, but proof will be in the pudding.

I think your missing my point, this isn't about success, it's about the way teams come back from the off season that he is talking about. And to be honest I probably agree with him. Ratts keeps harping on how we needed to come back in better shape and not wait 2 week's to get everyone up to certain standards to get the heavy running done.

Newnes was always in the top 4 or so when it came to running and it would be interested to see what he actually places in time trials with them to give you an idea about how fit some teams/players are us compared to them.

It's an example of the lack of leadership within the playing group over the past few years and why we desperately needed someone like Hannebery to come in and be someone else who can set those elite standards.

Funnily enough, it is two former leadership group members making those comments.

You just nailed it, BrutThough. Leadership has been thin on the ground since Roo's retirement. A damning indictment on Cho and those innthe leadership group.

It is further borne out by the lack of an obvious candidate for the captaincy, if Gears doesn't get the job which I doubt he will. Seb is the front runner, but I detect a distinct lack of confidence around here in his probable appointment.

Robbo, Hanners, Steelo, etc. all have up and downsides. Hopefully, someone steps up in the preseason and claims it.

We aren't at the pinnacle of the competition either. How a guy like Jack Newnes knows what it takes to be successful at AFL level is beyond me.

Again my point wasn't even about how we compare to them, it's about Carlton and Carlton only. Newnes reckons Carlton knows what it takes. For a guy that has been in the system nearly a decade and never even played in a final, that is funny to me. That's all.

Mate water off ducks back , agree they have been irrelevant since the brown paper bag needed to be declared.
Really confident we are right path , you don’t get people like Roughead, Rath coming aboard unless you are.

Oh yeah I don't really care just thought it was a funny comment

When he'd only been at St Kilda for 10 years, he obviously had no perspective on other environments. Now he does, and maybe that's showing him that the Saints weren't doing everything right. Or maybe he's just saying stuff because someone put a tape recorder in front of him. Who knows?

There is something awkward and funny about him talking about our standards not being good enough when the previous paragraphs he says the reason he left was because he knew he would not get a game for us.

I doubt if any of the clubs are complete rabble.
People notice differences.
If we took an ex Carlton player, they'd probably find things at Moorabbin that they are impressed with.

How does he know what a good football program looks like anyway. He is just bitter that we let him go. He is a funny guy.

Nahh that cant be the case. Every other club is a rabble, players have no idea and we do everything correct and are the best.

How dare we question our performance and preparation over the last few years.
