Autopsy Round 4: Hawks survive a massive scare vs Roos

You know I love your posts, however I wouldn’t say we didn’t deserve to win. 31 up and dominant is not achieved by the team not deserving. We were really solid and looking at a percentage booster. Yes the final minutes of game time were horrendous, however it was ours to lose. If we reverse the circumstances we would say north were dominant and we had a late flurry.

Notwithstanding this, I’m equally as frustrated. Need a four quarter effort no matter how far in front we are. Simply not confident at the moment.

Huge test against the grand finalists this week.

I'm happy, with the shortened season it's never been more important to just bank the 4 points. We're 2 points clear in 4th place and the season is basically a quarter through.

How do you run out of legs with 16 minute quarters? Lucky we aren’t playing 20.
3 weeks prep and who knows how all players were prepping during the break when not at the club

Last few weeks we have played a high pressure intense game and have looked gassed in the 4th .

Jury's out .....by next week ( a month in ) we should run games right out

That was unbelievable. Isn’t commentary supposed to be unbiased.?That’s was absolutely disgraceful. As if it’s not tough enough putting up with sh*t umpiring and hawks going to sleep, but on top listening to these snapper heads having a circle jerk over everything north did, with a sprinkling of praise to Hawthorn
And Brown going completely nuts for a north player who wasnt even selected today, as though Cunnington would completely change the result because he made north 5 goals better.
What a d|ck..

God we were good early, but need a serious autopsy of the last quarter.

Anyone see Clarko's presser? Went in on the umps.

69 tackles and 0 frees from a tackle. Just like the 16 final against the Dogs it is laughable at times

Where’s the holding the ball there? All ******* night

100% Went the fend off, lost the ball.

I don't like to have a crack at umpires, but they were disgustingly bad. Should have been at least 4 clear holding the balls against Kangaroos.

Yes he did. No issue with that, but we had options. IMO, McEvoy didn't beat Brown, our system beat him. We had options, but Clarko is digging his heels in on this one. Could've at least used Big Boy as a circuit breaker. Ceglar looked lost & embarrassing. McEvoy is easily one of the better rucks in the comp & may have stemmed the flow.

Agree re Brown hardly got look in for 3.5 qtrs , plus Frawley is still a very good stopper who can do the same job. Not sold on this McEvoy not rucking at all for the whole game.

The issue is that we are so robotic in terms of our commitment to structures that when we get tired and structures start to wilt, we simply fall in a heap.

What happened tonight was a carbon copy of last week, the difference was North hit the scoreboard and Richmond didn’t.

By all means I am wrapped to be 3-1, but simply put, we are making up the numbers if we don’t start to at least break even in some games with those important KPI’s. Is there any reason for us to be continually beaten inside the contest? It’s a bad bad habit to get into.
To me it’s clear we lack that extra midfielder rotation due to us playing BB down back. Atm I think we are robbing Peter to pay Paul which is causing us to fade late in games. It was evident in the Cats game and almost cost us tonight. Maybe the solution could be to bring in Jones or Finn (for Ollie) and play them as a forward / mid.

One of my favourite moments of the game was Ben Stratton's tackle at the end of the first. We were getting a little bit overrun and out bodied towards the end of the first term after a good start and Stratton leads by example and nails Polec in a crunching tackle. Initially nothing came from it bar a ball up and a little bit of a scuffle but you can pinpoint that as the moment where our intensity and physicality lifted. It's only something very small but I think it was the spark we needed to up the intensity and great that it came from the captain

I can’t believe people are actually saying that we should’ve taken Big Boy from defence.

Brown regularly kicks bags against us and he was absent tonight while Big Boy stood him all game.

Ceglar is now first ruck, it’s not going to change, and particularly when it’s so clear that our back half with McEvoy in the middle of it is destroying the opposition talls.

Regardless though, it’s up to Ceglar and the mids to get the job done now without McEvoy, and if our ball use forward of Centre was what it should’ve been this game would’ve been out of reach of the Roos by halftime.

I noticed that Brown stupid comment as well. If he is a 5 goal better player when in ..... should get paid more than Dusty!

As Mitchell starts to build back his fitness, he will get to more contests which means more off the ball for O'Meara, Shiels and Worpel, which will then lead to Smith, Henderson and Scully running the flanks and increasing their output. There's plenty of upside left as the midfield this year hasn't clicked. It will sort itself out. Add Howe and Impey as part of the rotation next month and we'll have solid midfield depth.

I just wish Clarkson would put McEvoy back in the ruck. You can't have Ceglar simply playing good and bad every game.

Yep. Bring in Finn for Ollie. Different role but we need the extra mid and run late in games.

Ollie a liability right now.

Below the knees rule needs to go.

I thought it had until I saw it for the first time tonight against Tom Mitchell. I'd just questioned a mate yesterday if the rules committee has revoked it...

But ah no there it is "paid against us".

Feels like a loss somehow.

A few points:

- Our structures and game plan was outstanding for the most part. A clarko masterclass. Really decent pressure nearly all night.

- Love how we seem to be playing more attacking footy, running forward of the ball not to dissimilar to the tigers last year. We looked bloody good in parts tonight.

- Fade outs - its a focus thing. Seems to be a bit of a trend with us. The Bulldogs, Saints and Carlton games all spring to mind from last year. Omeara has a tendency to drift in and out of games. 5 touches in the first 5 mins tonight, 6 for the rest of the game. Love the guy but its a common trend it many of his games.

- Chad Wingard. Wowee.

Really happy with the hard win (yes, we were seconds away from a stinging defeat). But for the boys to get the points in a game that meant a lot (Kennedy memorial) counts for a lot.
We look really good with that strangling, constricting defense around CHB flanks. If we can keep that up we will do all right. The end of game fade outs must be addressed if we are to go all the way. We did that last year too, didn't we?

I did notice that. Polec the wuss that he is didn’t like the tackle and said something to Stratts.
