I know people are suggesting that it's too expensive to sack Goody, but the reality is that it will cost us too much to not sack him.

I like Goody, and I feel for him, but it just isn't working... and it hasn't for a while. We've stagnated and players have gone backwards.

We know where this goes if we don't act. It will be typically Melbourne... a club defined by incompetence and mediocrity. Supporters have been taken for granted for too long and there needs to be some deep-cutting, effective changes made at all levels.

Goody and all his assistants, Bartlett and Pert need to be removed and replaced by effective, proven performers who can deliver on the club's potential.

The club can afford to pay Goody out. They have the cash to pay him next year, so they should use that to effect the first and most important change. If a quality coach can be found, the supporters would gladly do a whip around, tin rattle, go-fund-me, raffle... whatever it takes to pay him something for his first year. The club can negotiate a proper salary after that.

There must be plenty of good coaches out there who would jump at the opportunity to take on our list and do something with it, regardless of what their salary would be in the first year. We should start looking for them now.

I'm not convinced Bartlett needs to go. That's a big step given we're a well run club off the field. He's always had gaffes but PJ was able to hammer into him that speaking to the media isn't his bag.

It's incredibly worrying that me and Tulip knew that it was a horrible decision to extend Goodwin's contract after 2018 yet Gary Pert, a man in charge of a multi million dollar business thought it was.

I'm a bloody moron

Goodwin has shown absolutely nothing to indicate that he will ever make an adequate coach. He just seems like he has a really low IQ. The problem with stupid people is they often lack the intelligence to know how stupid they are. Goodwin just sits there with a goofy grin wondering what the hell is going on.

I have no idea how he got the job. He has a history of poor choices and illegal behavior. Excessive drinking in public, assault, gambling on games, being a major part of a systematic doping regime - including taking them himself. Such a pattern should have made him unemployable, but Melbourne made him coach, then extended him. It's seriously so unbelievable, there is only one possible club that could have done it.

It seems like the only thing those that defend Goodwin can come up with is "He's better than Neeld", and it's true, but as bad as Neeld was, at least he had a bit a passion and tried a few things. The argument is really between a toxic personality and no personality or clue.

Goodwin needs to go, but Melbourne can't afford to sack him - the answer is to manage him out.

The CEO needs to come out and say they are mixing things up, Goodwin is still the senior coach, but his strength is not game day coaching, he will not be involved on match day, he is not in the box or at the ground.

It gives a clear indication that he is not wanted, but the club has not sacked him or made him redundant. Goodwin would have no choice but to then resign on a small negotiated payout. It would be a bad look for the club, but not as bad as keeping possibly the second-worst AFL coach of all time (although the gap is closing).

.

That's the strangest idea I've ever read, fair play.

Massive line in the sand moment for the club on Saturday night. If we don't come out and hunt, intimidate and destroy Gold Coast on Saturday night the pressure on Goodie is going to increase ten fold again.

The AFL must be looking at us like a deadbeat son, they bought us a house, furnished it and found us a job and within 18 months we are back living under bridge giving handys for crack

I’ve never been one to sack a coach mid contract, but I am now of the belief that Goody has lost the plot. He doesn’t seem to make any moves throughout the game. If MCDonald isn’t getting near the ball why not throw him back. Move Smith forward to at least look like your trying to do something. It must be time to play some of the younger players like Jordon and Sparrow to see what their got in terms of talent.
Also, is there any chance one of the coaches can tell the backmen that social distancing doesn’t apply to the football field. Way too loose for my liking.
I think Lockhart, Smith and Hunt need to be wound up and give some of the young fellas ago. As previously discussed by other posters on this site we need another tall down forward. Either Weideman or Brown needs to play this week and if Bennell doesn’t get a game this week I’ll hit the roof.

Great idea, sort of like the MFC's version of "Gardening leave"

Having a different opinion made him over qualified for the role

He would have been "too tough" on the poor little cherubs. As someone who has actually played some footy under him, I can tell you from experience, he's easily the best coach I've ever had or seen in person. The amount of work he put into his coaching and opposition analysis was phenomenal.

He's a hard arse but fair. Today's generation can't cope with any home truths. It's pitiful. Goody 100% would have been guarding them from big evil Macca, probably undermining him.

I'll give you a Macca harsh but fair example:

As a cocky 16 year old playing senior footy I remember doing a drill at training and Macca had already had a go at all of us for the intensity not being high enough, i decided to just jog through a part of the drill and have a laugh with the bloke next to me, Macca pulled me aside told me to cut the shit and pick it up if wanted to be selected, I pretty much told him to G&GFd, he stops training completely pulls everyone in and makes me do 100 pushups in front of the entire playing group. I eventually got through them, he then comes over and picks me up himself, says no hard feelings moiving forward, we are now square. He then proceeds to drop me from that week and invites me over for dinner and chat on the Friday night that week before the game to talk football and life in general with me. By the end of it we both had a great understanding of what made each other tick. He gave me some pointers on how to improve my game, told me what roles he had in mind for me moving forward.

From that point onwards we both had a great deal of respect for each other despite going at each other's throats and me hating him for dropping me 24 hours earlier.

100% tough but fair.

Remember when a bunch of you fools were calling to sack him? :drunk::rolleyes:

...and here we are, first time playing finals since 2006! o_O :D

How does it feel knowing just how Off the mark that opinion is?:sick::poo:

I pretty much agree with this assessment.

The four year contract extension at the start of 2019 was indicative of a club that has accepted mediocrity for far too long. The club took many positive steps to recover from the abyss it found itself in after its (typical) catastrophic mismanagement, basically from the departure of Daniher to the appointment of Roos.

Whilst I wasn't particularly a fan of Roos' coaching or tenure, I believe some good foundations and recruiting were laid down during that period. Unfortunately (and once again) the current list is emblematic of some previous Melbourne teams certainly not lacking in talent, notably of the late 80's, the early and late 90's and early 2000's - talented individual players who have not gelled into a hardened cohensive team. In fact, they're the opposite of that - they are reknowned for being mentally weak. Whilst the players do ultimately need to take some accountability, in sport and business the buck stops with the people at the top. Goodwin has proven not to be the right successor to Roos. One finals series appearance over the 2016-2019 (likely 2020) era is categorical underperformance given the list at our disposal.

As someone else noted in this thread, our 4th placed finish 2018 was not as impressive as it seems on paper (particularly when you consider the embarrassment of the preliminary final). We outplayed Geelong in the first final I'll credit that, but we were lucky to beat a Hawthorn side who themselves were nowhere near the top teams that year (being West Coast, Collingwood and Richmond). So apart from being the media's sentimental favourite that year I'd argue were were no chance to win the flag (which manifested itself from the demolition we received by WCE).

And ever since then its like we're back at 2014, learning how to play football again. Except, not learning. Unlearning and going backwards rapidly.

And you might argue that Geelong under Thompson and Richmond under Hardwick took until their 8th year (and some serious underperforming along the way) until they seriously challenged and won the flag. But that comparison does not feel apt. We are not a potentially top 4 languishing at 10th. We are realistically a 8-10th team languishing at the foot of the ladder. All the more reason to move on and fast.

There’s a few saying that we can’t afford to sack Goodwin which is fair, but how long can the club afford to keep him around if we are on the bottom of the ladder again ?
Melb look like a bottom 4 team again this year. How long do we realistically wait for this clown to get it right ?
Another 2-3 years at the bottom makes me feel sick
mahoney also needs to GO !

**** me St Kilda supporters trouting off because their club has risen above putrid to mediocre for the first time in a decade.

Im not here to defend fellow posters, we all make mistakes none bigger than your miserable club, abject isn’t a strong enough word to describe the near 150 years of failure that is your club, they have played in more centuries than won premierships.

Maybe you’d be better off spending your time worrying why the names on your team sheet aren’t Bontempelli and Petracca and the names on your coaching board are Thomas and Watters

That's just crazy enough to work.

Agreed, we can't afford it. Surely we have some bigwig Dees supporter in the banking sector who can give us a loan to get rid of Goodwin. I think Ross Lyon is literally our only option at this point if we want to stop the rot and change the weak-minded culture problem we have. Even if Rossy can't win flags, he does galvanise his teams and he does make finals.
