I'm with Loki on this. Not really about the necessity for smashing teams, but our game style. I don't think we are getting the best out of our players. We bring it in slowly and then squeeze up to try to lock it in for repeat entries. How often do we actually score goals from these repeat entries? We've got a bunch of medium sized forwards with pace who are really damaging in space but don't do much when we bring it in to congestion. Our game style doesn't suit them at all, because it regularly involves congestion. When we lose, it's invariably because our forward entries were to congestion, whereas the other team got easy goals because they broke through our squeeze and got it in to an open forward line.

There were good signs against the Hawks in terms of quicker initial entries, hopefully that becomes a trend.

I still give us a chance to give it a shake, because our mids and defence are bloody good. But I don't think we are playing the ideal style for our group.
I still disagree to a point. Maybe if we had a strong FF (is there one around?) we could adapt our system but it isn't Cox, nor Stepho or even De Goey.

Maybe if we had two Darcy's it might work.

Anyway, I would think that you plan to the strengths of the group on the ground and try and expose weaknesses of the opposition.

Agree. But I don't think we're doing that. I think Bucks has a style that he thinks will work and he's playing that way regardless of whose on the list. If we had a gun tall and a couple of gun crumbers, I think it'd work magnificently. But we don't, we've got to get goals from our quick medium forwards and our current style makes it really hard for them.

I think we have a very good list and can pull it off this year, even with a style that I don't think is ideal.

Just watched the highlights on the AFL site, I'd be filthy as a Collingwood supporter. It's like they were curated by a Hawthorn supporter or staff member, you'd think they won. What they do show is Clarkson's coaching to milk non existent high contact. Also pathetic.

When you look at our system it does.
We are a very defensive team, we deny footy and set up for interecptions and clog the back half.
That is the area of the ground that is premiership worthy my concern is the ability to be a consistent offensive threat throughout a game. Be able to score enough to win cleanly and when in front keep the door shut.

Our attacking system both in ball movement and fwd 50 are poor and flawed. It is not premiership worthy.

We are P.Roos and R.Lyon def style team. Hate it. We rely on oppositions system breaking down due to our shutdown game. Teams after q1 often readjust.

2018 we lost the unlosable GF after quarter time blitz. Who loses a GF when up by 5 f*n goals in an utterly dominant quarter display?
This going to sleep rope a dope system is who...constantly leaves the opposition in the game and belief they can win it.

I am genuinely bemused you guys cant see the massive flaws and the cost it has already done in both 18 and 19.
2020 we're relying on fortune or are we hoping to kick an extra 1st quarter goal to protect the following 3 quarters?

You guys are relying on hope rather then confidence in it.

I share your frustration. My son thinks I'm never happy but I always have one eye on the finals whenever I watch us play and try to imagine how a failure to have the scoreboard reflect our overwhelming dominance all over the ground will once again bite us on the bum when it truly matters. Geelong put Brisbane to the sword by kicking multiple goals. Sharing the pill around with nifty throws ( a growing habit with Treloar which already cost us a goal last week) and neat chips is very pretty but when it invariably results in another defensive rebound or rushed behind it becomes very frustrating to watch. This style has been a very clear pattern during this season and previous years. We fly out of the blocks almost every week then struggle to score for the next three quarters.

That last quarter was excruciating to watch. I try to be satisfied with the win but I've had my heart shattered too many times not to feel very wary of this constant inability to capitalize on our dominance.

We don’t really care what the commentators say or think. We are used to them talking up the opposition and ignoring Collingwood.

Don’t need outsiders fake outrage on our behalf either.

I'd go Roughhead for now and continue to do what we've been doing for 7 years - cross your fingers about Reid.
Reid, he has so much sticky tape holding him together, his body faints at looking at scissors.
Leave the back six alone, dunny for mine.

I'm hearing that there is a bit of optimism about our strategy of moving from sticky tape to super glue. Fingers crossed. Even though he's made of glass, he's a better chance than Cox, Cameron or Kelly this year.

Don’t care how we win gf, seen us have many seasons blowing teams away, then to ultimately fail under finals pressure.
I think we forget that half of our defence was sitting on the park bench in 2018, with some of the others really not right like Howe.
It’s how u enter the finals that count, fitness of the playing group, brand of footy, and morale of the group these days. We are early in on a strange season where thrashings are going to be rare, because minutes played is a factor.
They have time to get the chemistry right.

He is good for one or two games, leave him out till the last two in October.
To get maximum impact

Only Gaffer tape should be used for sports medical purposes. If they instead bought the cheap stuff to hold him together that would explain why he is always falling apart.

Gonna nickname Atu the 'Bos' - clean disposal, like a Bos.

Onto the game - an experiment against a very depleted hawks. Pros:
  • Billy in the middle, liked his game
  • All the kids, great debuts
  • First kick first goal
  • Changing up roles, shows Bucks is flexible on strategy
  • Defensive dominance - we own this league bitches!
  • Dominance around the ball which leads to ....................
Cons:
  • 8.11 - not good enough with that sort of ball dominance, play the same level against the cats and we'll be soundly beaten. Should've at least kicked 15 goals with that sort of leather poisoning.
  • The Kelly injury, wouldn't happen at any other club
  • The 'talls' structure, even against a depleted defence we can't dominate. Gonna have to concede we need a genuine KPF - gonna have to develop the youngest. Cox is not it and Checkers is best as a 3rd tall.
  • Even with change of game style. STILL can't play out a full game............. if hawks kicked straight we would've lost.
A good win, but we are light years away from being pretenders let alone contenders.

I'd go with duct tape. Fixes anything.

They probably put it out to tender, and got the Indian made stuff instead, half sticky tape, the other half, not even scientific analysts knows what it is.

Bernie a great long roost but nobody can equal Buck's ability to rifle flat searing lace out pases onto leading players chests over 40 metres - nobody.

Lol....u never heard of the Richardson's, Greening and Barry Price?

And if we kicked straight it would have been a thrashing. It’s early in a strange season, let’s not get to down yet, over in the west will tell how we are going.

No doubt conversion is an issue, having that sort of cleanliness and that much ball should result in more scoring - much much more.

If we played us v geelong on thurs night you'd be brave to tip the cats.

I've seen good marks fail to hold chest marks when Bucks searing missiles slam into their chests.

Certainly heard of them and watched all of their careers.

All great players - especially John - but none of them equal Bucks in the kicking area.

Our play style is much more scrappy this season - much more physical.
I like that.
Watch as many grand finals as you like and average out the amount of 'pretty' wins against the grinding wins.
Heart and physicality wins more grand finals than champions.

Barry’s short passes were the best l have seen, but for sixty meter passes it’s hard not to say bucks.

Conversion is not really an issue just because we missed a few on one night. I don’t see any issues with our conversion generally except for JDG who didn’t even play last night.

At this stage the cats are going well, but let’s see how they are towards the end of the season, they are getting old, l think the will tire by the end of the season

Thing is Bucks could do it all - forward, pivot, wing and even defense.
And always loaded . . that booming pass whether 30 meters or up to bloody seventy - hard, flat and perfectly spun.
