I wouldn't say better, I reckon they are as different a player as Embers is to Matera.

Embers was much more of a utility that could go forward and back and didn't need to be as much of a link man thst Gaff needs to be. Gaff is always on his bike providing a get out option. In the mid 00s we had the balance of players where the wingman didn't need to do that as much.
Spot on. Embers could do it all - attack, defend, link up play, etc. Gaffy, as good as he is, just doesnt have the same variety of tools in the toolbox that Andrew had.

Gaff is a better player than Embley - I have Gaff on a wing and Embley taking the final on the bench (admittedly that cops and changes)

For the sake of it:

Wirrpanda Glass McGovern
Hurn Jakovich McKenna
Matera Kemp Gaff
Heady Kennedy Darling
LeCras Sumich Matera

Cox Cousins Judd

Kerr Naitanui Worsfold Embley

Then about 10 bloody unlucky.

Looking at it - these IMO would be the unquestionables to be in the side.

Wirrpanda Glass McGovern
Hurn Jakovich McKenna
Matera Kemp
Gaff
Heady Kennedy Darling
LeCras Sumich Matera

Cox Cousins Judd

Kerr
Naitanui Worsfold Embley

McGovern a lock. The rest you could through up other options - I mean, you’d be wrong obviously but you could try. 😉

I couldnt hand on heart pick gov over mcintosh

in fact on balance against an all time full forward - I’m picking mcintosh

the genius of Jak was his ability to both defend and attack. Gov is less of a defender - but an equal interceptor

So given our successful structure was generally two tall defenders - I don’t think Gov is a lock (yet)

FB Wirrpanda Mcintosh Mcgovern
HB Hurn Jakovich Mckenna
C Embley Kemp Matera
HF Heady Kennedy Lewis
FF Matera Sumich Lecras
R Cox Judd Cousins
I Nicnat Kerr Worsfold Darling

7 forwards.
7 backs.
6 mids.
2 rucks.

Look at the players NOT considered locks. Premiership captains, All-Australians, Club Champions, Norm Smith Medallists … some teams have all the luck :moustache:

Not just that, our 2nd best 22 is full of award winners, cult heroes & stars of the competition.

Chris Judd (10) > Luke Shuey (8)
As much as I like Luke Shuey, Chris Judd is head and shoulders a better player than him.
Being that I think Judd sits comfortably in the top 3 players since the turn of the century that's not really an indictment on Shuey.

Ben Cousins (9) > Tim Kelly (8)
Tim Kelly is still young, but Cousins' late 90s and early 00s form was pretty electric. Would be surprised if Kelly ever eclipsed him.

Daniel Kerr (8.5) > Elliot Yeo (8)
Yeo has a lot of features similar to Kerr.
He can be explosive out of the pack, he is strong beyond belief. I just think Kerr was cleaner and would consistently have more impact on the team as a whole.

Dean Cox (9) = Nic Naitanui (9)
I was sorely tempted to give this to Naitanui because he exemplifies the attributes that I rate in the ruckman, moreso than Cox.
Still there's no getting away from Cox's sustained effort during his career. I am in the minority of thinking that Cox is just a tad overrated (ducks for cover) and hated his flailing towards the end of his career.

Andrew Embley (7) < Andrew Gaff (7.5)
The first win for the 2020 team. Embley will always be considered fondly because he was at times a big game player (including the '06 GF).
However, Gaff is a two times All Australian and for a sustained period (even arguably this year) the best wingman in the AFL.
Except for individual games here and there I don't recall Embley ever being in that conversation (and I concede that there are less wingmen now than there were 15 years ago).
It's worth noting that if you look at my voting record you'll see that I am not an Andrew Gaff fan.

Tyson Stenglein (6.5) > Jack Redden (6)
Probably just favour Stenglein in this comparison. Redden has good games where he contributes but never has really got to a level that he did at Brisbane. I appreciate that he came 2nd in our B&F in our premiership year but I think that Stenglein was one of those team players that was more vital to us than Redden ever has been.

Michael Braun (6.5) < Dom Sheed (7)
Went back and forward on this one. I remember how involved Braun could be on the wings. What swayed me in the end was that Sheed can be so dynamic, both around the contest and near the goals. Sheed has an intrinsic ability of knowing what is going on around him. What he lacks is the burst of speed that a Shuey/Judd has to extricate himself from congestion. However, Braun doesn't have that either. Plus, at the end of the day, he brought us a premiership.
Disagree on gaff being better than embley

Ill be controversial and say Shepp is ahead of putting a square peg in a round hole like McGovern/McIntosh in that spot and also ahead of Guy McKenna. I also think Shuey has had a better career then Kerr who is still on the bench
