Well, they could start by asking; why would an assistant coach with two years experience leave a Club with a coach who has 9 years experience in the big chair and move his family 4000 miles across the country to work under a senior coach with 1 years experience in the big chair.

I’m tipping for the same reason Longmuir did the same to work at Coll - money, opportunity and career progression.

Possibly, I just think its a starnge move, at this stage of his career. Maybe in a couple of years time. maybe he has a really good relationship with Longmuir.

Why is it a strange move - he’s obviously ambitious.
But I’m sure you’re right the relationship with Longmuir has a lot to do with it.

Wow. It says a lot for Buckley's coaching and people management skills. Boyd jumps ship at first opportunity.

Maybe that is why Harvey and Sanderson have been here so long. They might be the only ones that can tolerate Buckley.

Well, yes. That pretty much sums it up. Doesnt leave much to the imagination, does it?
 
Ok...time to stop mucking around....Operation GET Luke Hodge needs to fire up right away.
He's got the pedigree, he's got the mongrel, he's got all the ingredients to make sure that Bucks wouldn't be cosy at all in his final contracted year (a bit like Mick when a young Nathan Buckley was an assistant).

Get this bloke now and start to get back on the front foot.

Obviously none of us are in a position to make any educated comments, but I would have much preferred to boot Sanderson and Harvey and promote Boyd internally than keep those two effwits and lose him to Freo.
 
I raised it before this season started and I'll do so again.

Warning bells should be ringing that we've taken another step towards one of the situations that the Murphy review specifically looked to address with it's findings.

Having lost our most highly rated assistant to Fremantle (and potentially best coach period) after 2 seasons and effectively demoting Hocking to the role of VFL coach we went into this season already with one less line coach than seasons 2018/19.

Now Boyd a mere one season into his tenure has been poached by Longmuir and it's kind of telling that it wasn't Harvey or Sanderson he was after.

At best it's surprising that the club wasn't prepared to match the financial offer by Fremantle.

At worst they did and Boyd decided Longmuir has more to offer him as a mentor.

Fall out of finals contention next season and seasons 19, 20 and 21 will start to closely resemble the gradual decline during Buckley's first 3 seasons in the job and that spells trouble.

Like many I thought at least one of Harvey or Sanderson needed to be moved on at seasons end.

With Boyd departing who knows if that will even be a consideration now but at the very least we need pay up and get a quality addition to our coaching panel.

If we don't?

Then I suggest you all duck and cover.

Skipworth joins senior coaching panel


Hayden Skipworth has been promoted to Nathan Buckley’s senior coaching panel.

After 12 months with Collingwood as Head of Academy, in which time six players pushed through to make their AFL debuts, Skipworth moves into a line coaching position. He joins Robert Harvey and Brenton Sanderson as assistants on Buckley’s senior panel.

It is a move back into line coaching for the former Essendon and Adelaide player. Skipworth relinquished a line coaching role at Essendon to join the Magpies at the end of the 2019 season. His resume also includes time as Essendon’s VFL coach.

“ ‘Skip’ added real value to our program this year. His empathy and ability to build relationships across the program stood out. With almost a decade of coaching and development experience, he will bring a strong and steady voice to Nathan’s panel,” Collingwood GM of Football, Geoff Walsh, said.

I love the use of the word “panel”

if you cast your mind back, the club would provide an estimate of the injury ie hamstring - 3 weeks. Then people realised, wow our players take so long to return from injury. The club said three weeks but it has been seven etc.

The club then changed the terminology to short term, medium term, long term. So no one knew wtf the club was talking about.

In this current case, I expect the word panel will mean that the roles of the coaches are not defined. So we cannot say - Sanderson you have had four years of being our ball movement and forwards coach and you are rubbish.

I could be wrong but let’s wait and see.

He was the midfield coach at Essendon in 2018, their forward line coach in 2017 and their VFL coach before that if I'm not mistaken. Hardly inspirational given how bloody average those lines were during his time. Not excited, but he could be good I guess.

Funny that his wikipedia page lists him as 175cm and 105kgs
