WARNING TO ALL VISITORS TO THE GEELONG BOARD. You are - for the most part - welcome to discuss the current list management & trading situation at Geelong. However, this is our board, so be respectful of the home board posters & don't inflame arguments (make your points succinctly and move on). And if you're just here to troll, then don't bother or you will be enjoying a holiday

I wasnt talking about stats i was talking about him getting on the park like Linc, Linc is an average player who couldnt even get fit for us yet he hasnt missed a beat in brisbane, if that happens to Cocky we are going to lose big time.

Perhaps. I need to see more than flashes of talent - and yes he clearly has that - to ascertain what we are missing out on though.

So Geelong pretty much pay pick 38+Fogarty for Shaun Higgins who turns 33 before he plays a game for us and finished 8th in North's BnF? That's horrible, borderline incompetent on whoever signs off on that deal from a Geelong point of view.
fog doesnt help us the next 2 years, higgins can. wanted more back from fog but if higgins helps us win a flag nobody will care about fog.

I don't get what people's issue is with McCarthy.

Ok so he's on the field now for Brisbane.

When he DID play for Geelong, he averaged 11 touches and a smidgen under a goal a game and about 0.6 goals assisted per game. He had flashes of promise but his contribution wasn't massive.

At Brisbane he's gone up to 12 touches, his goals per game has dropped slightly and so has his goals assisted.

In those two years we have added Miers, who while frustrating at times is going a little bit better than a goal a game., 0/57 goals assisted, 15 touches.

there is no way known I look at McCarthy as 'one that got away.'

McCarthy was pretty much fit in his last season at Geelong from memory, he just wasn't getting a game and I remember reading some comments, maybe on here somewhere that he wasn't really going that good / hard in the 2nds to warrant a promotion.

Except us. The pick is lower than his age.

What did SJ or Chappy or Sam Mitchell go for?
Chapman was pick 84, Johnson was a future 5th round selection. Higgins is potentially 38+Fogarty - either we really underrate our past legends, or we ridiculously overrate other club's near retirees.

Higgins can't even finish ahead of Walker in North's BnF. Turns us down last year to re-sign with North, now that he's got 1-year left he wants to bump it up to two at Geelong. Bloke is playing us, kudos to him though.

Might depend how much of his salary North will continue to pay

If there's minimal salary cost to us, then maybe it's worth parting with a slightly higher pick such as 30

If they pay all of his salary then yep sure but no way we should give more than 30, id throw 30 in the Cameron deal before giving it to North for Higgins.

That's probably it, but I think like with most 33yr olds, his best is well behind him now. Eighth in North Melbourne's BnF despite playing every game this season, can't see him getting back to anywhere near his best another year later.

I wouldn't be going higher than 30, would have preferred 38 at the most

Maybe getting 51 from Carlton in the Fogarty trade is because we want to use that pick in the Higgins deal

wouldnt be looking at the bnf there lol, it's alot eaiser to finish higher up in the bnf in a crap team in the backline. Luke McDonlad won it there because he was playing as a loose defender and taking kickouts. That doesnt make him better than Goldy.

without wanting to be churlish...

Nakia, Fog departures do add to the growing list of 1st picks that have not progressed to 100+ gamers. As much as I love the huge overall contribution of Wells to our dynasty, it must be acknowledged that the success rate of our 1st picks has been quite poor.

The ‘common thread’ has been picking players with a bad injury in previous year. Really think this absolutely has to be avoided- often hampers development and sometimes is portends bodies that are prone to injury. Hasn’t worked since Selwood (maybe Varcoe). Speculate with later picks, please.

Unbelievable isn’t it. I think we are about to overpay in a big way for Higgins.
A 33yo should cost next to nothing unless you’re the GOAT

Johnson we let go of stupidly cheaply but Chapman was going somewhere where he wasn't going to have any impact whatsoever in whether a side was going to win a comp or not. It's easier for a club to hold someone to higher ransom if they know that person is potentially going to fill a void that could achieve the ultimate success.

Nit picking, but Fogs was a 2nd rounder, pick 22.

I really like Higgins as a player but I was under the impression he didn't like Geelong as a place. I remember doing a pre-season with his old man at Newtown back in the day, local footy royalty. Seems Geelong didn't rub off on his son.

Now correct me if im wrong but didn't Chapman decide to leave on his own, we had offered him a contract but said he might play VFL a bit as well and he didnt like it.

I think in the end SJ cost GWS a flag when he got himself rubbed out.

I dont know what it is but I got a real Bundy feel about Cockatoo this year, get the feeling that all he wasnt as well received by the club/players as he had been over the last couple, might be nothing but in the end it almost felt like he despised the club especially when we didn't play him, could be some bad blood there, will be interested to see if he thanks the club for everything they have done for him.
I am aware that he was just not that smart with his rehab. Just did not have the intellectual capacity to truly understand what he needed to do to get himself right. I've mentioned it before. I remember being told that there was a period over Christmas, where players could go off and do their own thing and he text back from overseas and alot of internal people were surprised/disappointed that he didnt have the discipline to stay at home and do the sessions. You look at O'Connor who stayed in Geelong during the stand-down period this year, when he could have gone back to Ireland.

I know that he is very much loved by the playing group, but the guy relies on his elite athletic attributes, not on hard work.

I got the feeling near the end that the love from the playing group had died down, he didnt look very happy.
