I think 2018 with his hitout dominance in the Grand Final, but overall the majority view being that Vardy/Lycett had equal output around the ground (really overall giving Grundy a slight win, disregarding expectations) shows that he just isn't the player you pay 7 years of a million for. Also wasn't that impressive v Geelong this year. Can't rely on playing Mumford in finals all the time to dominate.

I ultimately agree with you that Grundy’s contract is too much (mainly due to its size and length as a combination, indirectly causing a salary cap squeeze, IMO). However, I have a very different recollection of Sandilands, Fyfe, and Mundy as a midfield combination, specifically your comment that they consistently lost clearances. From what I recall, Sandilands and Fyfe were frightening as a clearance duo. I took a look at some stats and websites, and found this: “It would be hard for anyone to come up with a more dangerous combination than Aaron Sandilands tapping the ball to Nat Fyfe. In 2015, Fyfe’s Brownlow winning year, Fyfe led the AFL for first possessions – averaging 10.8 per game. In 2015, Sandilands had 998 hitouts and 57 clearances for the year, Fyfe had 173 clearances, Mundy had 162 clearances, and as an aside Lachie Neale had 142 clearances. For some comparisons, the most clearances Judd got in a year as a clearance machine was 159, Dane Swan’s highest was 147, and Gary Ablett’s highest was 133. The Docker’s big issue was more-so their lack of a damaging forward-line and bare bones back line, IMO. But their midfield was one of the best ever.

Not to be argumentative, just want to make sure Sandi’s value isn’t undersold. Him and that midfield aren’t the reason they never won a GF. I think the Dockers were as competitive as they were despite lacking any other real talent because of their midfield. Aside from that midfield, all they had was a couple key posts in Pavlich and McPharlin. It’s easy to name starring midfielders for them during this time but they were incredibly bare in their forward line and back line. Ballantyne and two very young players in Walters and Taberner. Mayne? Back line also had Stephen Hill, then Michael Johnson as their next best. Garrick Ibbotsen? There’s a reason that back line turned to crap and Fremantle dropped off hugely once McPharlin retired.

Sometimes clubs get sucked into contracting players for a long period of time for big cash to keep others at bay.
Grundy is obviously good for collingwood but his salary has probably contributed to the need to let go of players like treloar, phillips and stephenson.

That's a great post. I stand corrected > it is better to say then that despite clear ruck/midfield dominance they consistently lost games (and big stages ones).

Ultimately my sentiment is that dominant rucks don't win games the way dominant mids or KPPs do. I guess this is why mid gets the most Brownlow votes and the most damaging players are the mid/fwd types like Dusty and to a lesser extent Danger + Fyfe. So that's probably where your best $$$ is spent!

Their record on 'big stage' games was decent over that period. They had a finals record of 4-5, whilst not outstanding included wins at MCG and Simmonds Stadium in 2013 against all the odds.

It's probably the straight-sets losses in 2014 which make it seem they had a poor run in finals. The choke against Hawks at home in 2015 doesn't help either.

Grundy has to be up there, 7 years well into his 30s, huge dollars for a ruckman who was down this year, before the new deal has even kicked in. Generally anything greater than 5 seems to end badly, but I imagine clubs are making those huge commitments with the expectation of diminishing returns. Dusty appears to be the exception at this point.
