i know its only NAB but rusling hasnt gone near the ball yet, everytime he does it seems like he scared?

is he injured or something?
i hope we dont see this carry on into the normal season, because we need this kid to fire?

How is he supposed to get the ball when the team don't know how to deliver it to him? He's not going to be a Rocca type mark of the ball, he had five metres on his man every time and the ball was continually sprayed high and wide of him.

Also our delivery was so pedestrian, North flooded back every time to limit his opportunities.

We have far superior problems than Rusling. I'm looking straight in Richards' direction. He is muck.

mate i am not talking about kicking goals, i am talking about running and chasing, he was standing still in the first half and wouldnt go near anyone

Add Rocca, Bucks, Didak and Fraser by his side plus delivery and midfield supply from Swan, Lickher (delivery..hhmm?), Obes and Lockyer and then let's assess.

Fact: Rusling And Cloke will not win us the flag in '07 on their own.

north were flooding their arse off which made it hard and the slow movement in didn't help

Solid point - Rocca, Bucks, Didak, Fraser, Swan and Lockyer would be some of the most likely to deliver the ball well to our forwards, and all weren't there.

And Rusling needs space to lead into which generally means fast transitions inside 50.. which weren't happening with us being smashed out of the middle and at the stoppages.

The ball may not have been delivered to him well enough or they clogged up our forward line with their flooding.
Whoop Dee Doo.
He is going to have to get used to that,if he is to become one of our focal points in attack.

My main problem with him last night, was his attack on the ball,or rather, his lack of it.
He seemed to just stand off the ball and didn't look to interested in getting it.At least thats what it looked like on telly.

And for someone with his pace,he didn't really chase after the opponents when they were in possession of the pill.He was just ambling along behind them.A forward still needs to put on some defensive pressure.

I hope that this can be put down to him having "one of those nights".
If not,we will be needing to find another full forward real quick.

I really hope that he proves me wrong though, because I think he is a good prospect in our forward line.

Doing a good impersonation of Tuckey so far in his career. Needs to lift and soon.

RUSLING is not going to be a good forward. The reason is simple, he turns like the quenn mary after the ball hits the deck. He loves to run in straight lines, but cant turn & has no footy smarts.

This might be a long shot, but I know he cant play forward or midfield. So I actually think he could make a good fullback. I know but here me out.

He will be able to keep up with anyone on a lead & is pretty strong. It might be his only hope because he has no chance of making it as a forward. I would not play in rnd one & this would be my set up:

Egan Rocca Medhurst

Buckley T Cloke Thomas

With Didak to come in when fit & Fraser to pinch hit evey now & then. We need Cloke & Rocca to have big a year! MEdhurt & Egan to chip in for 30 goals each would be nice too, but I doubt it!

For me there were two very worying moments with Rusling. In the first one a North player dropped in front of him and took a mark. Rusling had the opportunity to go hard and, if not spoil, then definitely make the player earn the mark. He stopped short.

The second was a short time later. The ball was in dispute and he had the opportunity to put his head down and get his hands on it. He chose to wait for the opposition to grab the ball then tackled him. Very concerning

In the dozen or so games I've seen Rusling play, he's shown nothing other than his ability to lead and mark. Once the ball hits the deck he has absolutely no idea what to do. On the rare occassions has got a loose ball get he takes too long to make a decision what to do with it.

I can't believe the hype this guy's had over he last 2 years. Unless the midfield can spoon feed him top quality footy and the other forward's create room for him, he will achieve next to nothing.

He will be better once we have more experienced forwards down there.
Give the bloke a chance, He will improve alot this year, maybe not to the extent people have been saying but he will improve a fair bit.

Looks like Rusling hasn't changed. We have seen it so many times. He just attacks the ball wrong to be out of position and therefore he doesn't get near it.

I think someone at the club needs to assess what is going wrong and whether his role can be fixed. We can't have a forward on the ground who is struggling consistently in this unknown way.

yeah-nah hit the nail on the head also...similarities between he and Tuckey.

I'm going to be watching Rusling with great interest this season. I dare say he could be a one-trick pony. I don't think he's smart enough to hold down full-forward at the moment but I'm not concerned about that, as is the case Rocca will play out the ENTIRE match from full-forward most likely - he's the stalwart. Perhaps he may need a few games under his belt to get the feel of things.

Cut the kid some slack guys..lets not get on his back and start comparing him to other...He still has to play his 12 senior game lets remeber. He is a young bloke who had an athletics background who needs a few more years to discover what this game is all about. He did run around last night a lil headless and there is no doubt he struggles to find space when the flood comes in. Most top liners in the comp have the same problem. He will find his own feet..guys he has played 11 senior games....just because we need to replace Tarrant does not mean its gonna happen overnight..
Lets not be unreasonable with the hype and over zealous assessments of how great he is when he is still a kid finding his feet thats all...

let common sense prevail before we burn this kid at the stake

Has a lot to learn but I'm prepared to wait. The positives outweigh the negatives. I think his lack of attack a few times the other night were decision making errors stemming from lack of confidence, rather than laziness or softness.

Probably not in our best 22 yet. Medhurst will be a handy addition to our line-up as he will cover the role earmarked to Rusling, while he continues to learn the ropes in the VFL.

I was actually impressed with the mark he took and goaled from, because he was going back with the flight of the ball when he took it - It was something different from the typical "lead, mark and kick" that he had shown to date.

However, I do agree with one point that has been made in this thread: He has been overhyped. There is no doubt about that. Everyone who believed, or still believes that he has the potential to play Chris Tarrant's role in our forward line is completely ignoring the fact that he has shown NO ability to do so. He doesn't have the agility, the ability to react quickly, or the ability to get involved in the game that would allow him to play that role.

In saying that, it is not that I don't think he can be useful to us, but that he will probably end up being a Mark Williams-type forward who pretty much only leads and marks, if he ends up making it.
