Woodville West Torrens/South Australia
Midfielder

Poulter has a point of difference when assessing him against other midfielders in his part of the draft, and it is his height. The Woodville-West Torrens midfielder enjoyed a consistent and productive season, averaging 25 disposals and three clearances. He can play inside and outside and is a sweeping left-foot kick.

Where does he go? Appears set to be taken in the second round. Carlton has an interest and he could get through to their first pick at No.31. Adelaide is also a possible destination with its pair of second-round picks.
Won't reach us, probably, we'd have trade up again.

I’d be happy if we were able to draft Winder and Baldwin (back our medical and S&C teams to get him right) and given we’ve got them training with us, MacDonald and Griffin Jonathon Marsh.

Beyond that I’d like to see us sign a seasoned ruckman for our VFL side as back up for TDK and Pitto.

That would round off a very successful off season for mine.

So let me get this straight.

I picked Poulter yesterday in my phantom draft for the Giants.

I said Poulter is "my guy" this year ie. I have him rated higher than just about everything I've seen.

But I also said I don't see how we get him unless we trade up for him and even then I'm not convinced he's a great fit for us.

And now Twomey in his latest update specifically mentions Carlton as being keen on him.

Callum - please send me a PM. I know you're reading this.

How long have you been part of the recruiting team at the Blues, J?

Philp last year, Poulter this year.

Anybody I'm missing?

Just a little bit of Honey.

I hope it's a genuine interest rather than simply reading off the general mood on footy forums. I wouldn't worry about a player 'fitting', we'll find a place for him if he's good enough. He's arguably a better fit than Kemp and we are not begrudging him. That's unless the latter turns into a KPP, which is possible.

Fair point but there's a chance we're splitting hairs between a few players in that range of the draft.

If there's a clear reason why we want him then sure, why not. however, if someone of need was available, it would be tempting to try and balance out the list.

I just hope we don't do anything stupid like swap our future first for Adelaide's pick 22 and a future 3rd. If he's there at pick 31, great. If not, hone in on other targets.

Poulter is an interesting prospect. Seems to bully smaller opponents due to his height and general strength, but his nous seems fine. Reminds me a bit of Charlie Ballard (also an SA player) in his draft year who played in the midfield and forward, but had the height and read to be moulded and redeployed in defence.

You can often get pretty lucky with interstate players if their local clubs (in this instance Port/Crows) aren't keen or don't have the picks, so he's certainly the type of player who'd slip down the order. Not having a clear position at AFL level probably works in our favour.

Port's Pick 35 will be eaten by Jones, so really if he gets past Adelaide's early 20's picks he might even get all the way to our second pick.

As things stand pick 6,7,8 they wont use on Henry.
Pick 44 is their next pick. We have 31 & 38 before then.

Probably a bit early, but still seems within range. TDK and Charlie Comben would taken a fair bit earlier than their projected position, mainly due to their upside and the premium you'd usually pay for the combination of athleticism and competitiveness. Most senior ruckman aren't stoppage specialists, and we are still trying to reconcile how we manage our ruck stocks long term, so maybe Walsh fits in here as a developing ruck.

I wouldn't think we'd take him at either second currently, but I could understand if the club wanted to take him on.

Bid on Brand? Select him with 38?

One can't afford to be too clever with live trading though.
You simply take the player you rate highest/need most and worry about things thereafter.

Surprised that Adelaide would bid on JUH.
Are they really just wanting to be 'honest' or may there be other reasons e.g. Taking the heat off a player being the #1?

Brand is well in that range, so a bid would be justified

Doesn't really matter about the subplots, if Crows think he is the best player, you make the bid

So, Crows all but confirming they will bid on JUH

As they should
That's not what I took from what he said.
He said IF they rated him number 1 in the draft that they would bid at 1. Didn't say that's where they rated him or that's what they'd do.

The clear reason might be that we simply rate him and think he'd replace a player we could use just as well in another position. I don't know why some people seem to find notions like that so radical (not necessarily yourself). Only the future will tell if such a move would be stupid or not, although I'd prefer another pick for this year in such a trade rather than a future third, although I haven't checked the drafter order for such a scenario.

The issue we may have there is that even if * match the bid, we may still have to burn our 2nd round pick for on Walsh anyway if we're that keen on him.

Our next pick is currently at 74, so there's a lot of picks until we get our next turn, and * currently have #73 so could still trump us if he's still on the board.

It may all just be a bit of bluff from Dodoro to force our hand - so it really gets down to how highly we rate big Henry, and if there are other options like a Mallard that would be available.
