WARNING TO ALL VISITORS TO THE GEELONG BOARD. You are - for the most part - welcome to discuss the current list management & trading situation at Geelong. However, this is our board, so be respectful of the home board posters & don't inflame arguments (make your points succinctly and move on). And if you're just here to troll, then don't bother or you will be enjoying a holiday

We needed to get a legit ruck prospect in Neale. I don’t expect Tsapatolis to even play afl at all. If he does that’s great but he’s just purely a swing for the fences. His lack of footy puts him so far behind Neale.
Apologies from gws for stuffing up yours and ours trade period. We should have accepted compensation pick for cameron, with an "understanding" that the next time we trade you owe us a favour. This is I think what happened with sydney and hawthorn (with hawthorn paying under for tom mitchell)

Forgetting what we paid for Holmes, I like the 3 picks. Outside run is clearly a weakness and now with Holmes to develop alongside Clark we have a couple of decent young wingers. We desperately needed to add a development ruck and Neale is the best in this years draft pool. Whilst we are well stocked for hbf’s, I don’t rate Kolo and O’Connor could decide to return to Ireland after another season or so. Stewart isn’t a kid either.

Next year though we need to go for mids, mids and more mids. Do what North did this year. We are very quickly going to fall if we don’t bring some quality ball winners in with Selwood, Danger and Duncan coming to their ends.
It is a long way off and I'm always suspicious of narratives around deep drafts but that was my first thought when reading about the two second rounders included with the Cameron trade. Guys who are full time mids for their club sides get pushed to the flanks or second rotation by the superstars in the state sides, and they're always there in the second round.

Agree - the strategy looks really sound - An apprentice winger, tall forward/ruck and tall/small backman this year all with elite characteristics (we are now well stocked with KP back and forward and ruck prospects to develop), and next year with 3 second rounders, take 3 mids in a strong draft.
If you look at our list as it is now, the level of depth is scary and will need good management when so many good players will need games to develop them. Really earning Senior Games is key to success, and our VFL team is starting to look like pretty serious unit in 2021.

Just to confirm is our list full now? Which means we won’t be participating in the rookie draft or pre season draft today. Interesting the Baldwin and Walsh weren’t drafted. They might get rookied today.

Some sort of arrangement could have been reached that would have seen both clubs end with more imo. ...but I think GWS were intent on pegs in the ground and who had the biggest swangdangle. For example I suspect we would have traded a higher pick for Caldwell that Ess gave you ...

The annoying part of the narrative form me was the constant assertion that GWS need to maximise the Cameron deal etc... with little credit given to him already having played 1 more year than most Free Agents... by 9 years ...players should be able to move with the type of the last minute theatrics that happened.

I guess we will see if Bruhn was worth the combat

interestingly after the draft Geelong is no longer the oldest side by average age.. that mantle belongs to St Kilda
We actually had the 4th oldest list in 2020 behind Collingwood, West Coast and Hawthorn.

I totally agree holmes would have gone by 25 i just would have offered richmond essendons future 2nd and maybe a future 3rd or 4th i wouldnt have risked touching our future 1st..but i really like the pick its only the price im not a fan of.
If the Cats end near the top of the ladder next year (hopefully premiers) then that future first-round pick for next year will probably end up being pick 20ish anyway, so it didn't bother me.

IF... It will depend on FA's and Father Sons ..as well as our season. Something will have to go really wrong for it to be worth better than P15

Great analysis bellpark
We've added 3 best 22 in Cameron, Smith and Higgins and still managed to pick 3 kids who fill obvious needs ( in a few years)
Whether they make it or not is yet to be determined but they're all in now with a show :thumbsu:

I like your point about strategy and without being obvious Wells and co clearly work a long way in advance.
Case in point is a mate who has a very promising under ager eligible in 2021 - Geelong has a zoom with him next week as a general introduction for both parties. We are the only AFL Club so far who has reached out which speaks to our proactiveness.
My takeaway from that is we've probably been tracking these kids for quite some time, unlike some of the tone on the draft thread which intimated we pulled Holmes out of obscurity.

I agree there is a chance it could be 20 for 20 but it could also end up being pick 8. Which is why i would have offered richmond one of our future 2nds and a 3rd and then walked away and let melbourne take holmes when richmond asked for a future 1st. That said i think holmes can be very very good i just dont like the price risk.

Best part of the night for me is getting Neale though great pick.

This is an argument for me that makes no sense.
What we gave up for Holmes is insignificance as to what Holmes becomes as a player. If he turns into a 200+ game player and/or wins a B&F then what we paid for him now is totally irrelevant. Even if it turns out to be potentially pick 8 in next years draft as you stated no one will care if he becomes a regular best 22 player for 10 years.
I don't know how people (particularly posters on here) can make that call without seeing him play. Yes you can make call on whether we got it right, but not now, in 3-5 years yeah you can.
As for price risk what does that even mean? Every draft pick comes with an element of risk, whether it be pick 1 (Watts, McCartin) or pick 100.
IMO draft picks (particularly early picks) are massively overrated, and we as a club have proven that over the years. As has the likes of St.Kilda, Carlton, Freo & Melb for the opposite reasons.

And on a side note, whats with all these Winners and Losers from draft night articles? Complete and utter clickbait BS. Some club won the draft because they took player X at pick 50 says some 2 bit overnight draft expert. How the f$%k would they know. Would rather listen to the list managers who have watched these kids play than some 3rd rate journo who has read a big footy phantom draft and now thinks he know everything.

The guy at ESPN gave us a D+ and Tigers an A lol. He must really rate next year a lot higher than this year. Cause all tigers took was a ruck that wasn’t expected to be drafted and Rioli FS who was always projected to go 40+.

We still lack the cornerstone. So I suspect we will have to still try to look elsewhere for that when needed.
