In todays Age Robert Walls has counted down from one to eight of what he thinks are the greats currently playing. His list goes as followes.
  1. Glen Archer
  2. James Hird
  3. Nathan Buckley
  4. Robert Harvey
  5. Chris Grant
  6. David Neitz
  7. Anthony Koudoufidies
  8. Shane Crawford
Who do you think is the better player or are some players missing eg West, Ricciuto, Bell?

I think most people would at the very least have taken 2,3,4 over Glen Archer, good player though he has been.

He's missing players that haven't played in Victoria for the majority of their careers.
Surely the list was only taken from Victorian teams? Ricciuto should make that list any day of the week.

Wallys views are generally laughed at rather than taken seriously.

Just to add my 2 bobs.
1. James Hird
2. Robert Harvey
3. Nathan Buckley
4. Mark Ricciuto
5. Scott West
6. Chris Grant
7. Kouta
8. Glen Archer
9. Benny Cousins
10. Matty Lloyd

Pretty average list if you ask me...

For mine...

1. Hird
2. Harvey
3. Buckley
4. Ricciuto
5. West
6. Crawford
7. Lloyd
8. Grant

Special mentions to Kouta, Neitz, Archer and Bell. :)

Bag it as much as you want.

Surely Judd would make it onto one of these lists as current playing greats. If he were to never play again he would be talked about and compared with other players in 25 years time.

From the original 8 names listed I would put Harvey, Buckley then Hird as top 3. No disrespect to Archer. However going on 2006 form alone as a guide to their current form I'd pick West.

it was a funny read as per the norm from walls

he separated hird and bucks by saying hird has won two flags, not sure what that has to do with the individual tho??

also confused as to the reason behind archer at number 1 becasue he was a team man?? Archer has never even won a north melb b&f for fecks sake, yet walls rates him as the best player?!?

he then said harvey is the most individually decorated player on the list, yet his individual awards dont stack up against buckley who has more b&f's a norm smith, rising star, longest serving captain, magarey medal etc.

perhaps he should have simply ranked them and not tried to give reasons as he stumbles around too much

1.Buckley
2.Hird
3.Harvey
4.Crawf
5.Neitz
6.Grant
7.Kouta
8.Archer

If you look at the names he is listing players that have been around a long time in Victoria and are the face of their clubs for at least the last 10 years. Thus why no players from Geelong and richmond as they have no standout champion players. (Don't make me laugh with richo).

1. Hird
2. Harvey
3. Buckley
4.Crawf
5.Grant
6.Archer
7.Kouta
8.Neitz

I think he was alluding to the 2 brownlows to 1 and more MVP's.

But who know whats going through that idioitic brain of his.

To be truly great you have to be a great leader. Hird was a pathetic leader. When it came down to the nitty gritty he was about as bad as bad can be. He shouldn't even be on this list.

You have absolutely no idea what you are on about.
I think you must have gone troppo.

Thats ridiculous, you'd better be joking or trolling.
Re: Robert walls list, what a joke! That had better be for the top 8 players based in victoria. Otherwise a typical Melbourne-centric viewpoint. Archer top of the list?!! And Crawford a 'Great'?
IMO: (no particular order)

James Hird
Mark Ricciuto
Scott West
Robert Harvey
Chris Grant
David Neitz
Chris Judd (he's almost a great already at 23!)
Adam Goodes
Honourable mentions to:
Nathan Buckley, Kouta
Perhaps have forgotten some

What makes Ricciuto 'a great' and Crawford not

If people bother to read the article, they'll discover that he's not writing about current greats of the game, he's writing about eight wonderful players in Archer, Hird, Buckley, Harvey, Grant, Neitz, Kouta and Crawford who are set to RETIRE at the end of 2007. I'm tipping Judd & Goodes have a few years in them yet!
