Summer Tokyo 2021 - Track & Field

It's funny seeing some of the slightly awkward running styles on the heptathletes. Makes you appreciate what machines the specialist runners are.

extremely slow for a final when you consider it is a "fast track" and they are all wearing those new shoes which give you a couple of %. Puzzling running by some. It was slower than both semi finals and like 4 seconds slower than 2016.
That's middle distance racing - they're not there to run fast times. Got every other meet of the year to do that. They all want to win. Just like the track cycling in middle and long distance races it's about getting to the line ahead of your competitors, not necessarily getting there in the fastest possible time. Based on the heats and semis Bol could clearly run 1.43 in the right race. Perhaps quicker.

Exactly. I can’t recall Mo Farah ever running a super fast time. Was a pure racer. Was ’only’ ~18th fastest ever but multiple gold medalist.

It will be interesting to see the Peter Bol affect come Brisbane 2032.

He and fellow Aussie-Sudanese runner Joseph Deng have pushed each other and it was Deng who in 2018 finally broke Ralph Doubell's 1968 Oz record when he set a WR at altitude in Mexico city to win gold. Deng ran 1.44.21 in Monaco Diamond League meet and Bol here beat it with a 1.44.13 in heats and 1.44.11 in the semi. Deng had a poor season and didn't run a qualifier.

Bol will inspire a whole lot of Australian-Sudanese kids to take up running/athletics. He might also inspire Aussie kids of European and other heritage as well. 11 year lead time to pick up these 12-16 year olds in time for Brisbane would be great.

As a Port fan its been interesting to watch the impact of Aliir Aliir coming to Port this year. Along with our NGA player Martin Fredericks and his twin brother Michael who we didn't take as an NGA pick at end of 2018 and Freo drafted him the next year. I've noticed a few people of African heritage attend our games this year, that I had never seen before. One very excitable middle aged Australian-African women sat near me one game and got right behind Aliir.

The American commentators just then were effusive in their praise for the Australian track and field contingent after commenting on Moloney's commanding 400m win to leave him 2nd overall. Plenty of 4th, 5th and 6th places and finalists in events where we're traditionally absent.

I agree. No medals, but competitive across many disciplines. I hope with Brisbane getting 2032 that we pump some more money into athletics and give ourselves a real shot at gold medals over coming Olympics. We have the talent - can we develop them?

My knowledge of the athletes who compete in the decathlon is zero.

For those more well versed, is Moloney a chance to stay top 3 by the end of tomorrow? How strong is he on the second day of events?
