See, in years past Bontempelli wouldn't win it this year because the umps were less drawn to the names of the person and more their performances; that is, unless the name attached to the performance is a negative (Diesel, for example). This year, Bont will probably get up despite having a few who should be pinching votes from him almost every game.

I don't think Sam will win, but I'll be unsurprised if he does.

Hopefully good comes from it, but the media seem to be baying for blood.
Just hope they don’t push it to far.

Agreed, in fact if they drive Tex away from the game/Crows, it could do more harm than good (increase racism from bitter and ignorant neantherthals etc)

My heart broke seeing Eddie speaking about it publicly, he almost looked like a broken person, but I was also inspired by his passion and determination to never stop fighting against bigotry and the quest to re-educate the likes of Taylor Walker.

Extraordinary player, Extraordinary human being is our Eddie.

Bringing him back to our club and the Carlton family is something I will always be grateful to David Teague for.

Razor Ray gives himself his due every time he takes the field. Spotlight always on the f***er.
It's a shit article. Dude talks about everything but the umpiring, other than to say - repeatedly - that Ray is a good umpire.

No, he isn't. He guesses, is emblematic of the inconsistency within AFL umpiring in a modern context. He'll pay an in the back from a holding the ball, then the holding the ball from an in the back from the same act within ten minutes.

If we're going to celebrate umpires for being flamboyant, I suggest we give them semaphore flags covered in glitter and change all the signals to ensure maximum contortion.

I didn’t read the article so thank you for saying what I could only assume it would be like. A crap article. The thing I am most surprised about is that Ray didn’t write the article himself.

A few months ago I was randomly looking at some AFL videos of the competition they have in America on YouTube and it was a final from a couple of years ago. On the game I had on I went straight to the middle of the video and the first thing I see is the umpire and thought that he looked familiar. The commentator says “Razor Ray”. I thought, holy shit, we really can’t escape him.

Carlton are going so bad that the media/AFL don't even want to relocate us to Tassie...

St.Kilda-11 years ago were on top of the world. Now they have a 13m debt, a fair weather supporter base that only attends their matches when they are consistently winning. It comes down to the Saints or Norf, and frankly Norf look to be in a better position, as they will be debt-free in 2022 or 2023. They do desperately need to bolster their membership numbers.

I love the way the AFL & media have wallpapered what happened to Adam Goodes. Without doubt, the most racist disgusting act ever perpetrated on an indigenous Australian. Champion of the game, premiership player and dual Browlow medalist and was chased out of the game by a bunch of inbred supporters from all clubs including Carlton, and the AFL just sat there and did nothing..so typical..

I still recall the vile abuse that Glenn James would cop at Princes Park and every other ground in the late 70's & 80's. Inspirational man and one of the best people in the game.

Hopefully that's the end of Walker. What a disgrace.

Racism is Racism, it doesn't really matter of what name he was called, whether it was what was stated or something that doesn't sound so bad language wise. It is not the name that does the hurting, it is the way in which it is said, it is a derogatory remark or put down which makes the person feel that they don't belong. Sharing a joke about a race, may be a joke or a throw away remark, but unfortunately someone gets hurt on the way through, they may not show it, or express it, but they will feel it.

This is totally my opinion and thoughts on racism, coming from the point of view of Italian descent growing up and playing football in Australia, even now I still cop a drive by and I stopped playing 16 years ago.

Now I'm not comparing myself to indigenous Australians and what or how they may feel, but I feel it would be 10 fold on what I have copped and how I feel about racism.

Not sure what your point is exactly... that all racism is bad? Agree.

In this instance however, Walker's apparent use of such violent phrasing - the very same Monkhorst used OVER 25 YEARS AGO - is beyond reprehensible. Just appalling.

Wilkinson's other points about the AFL's inherent racism are also spot on. Why is Eddie McGuire commenting on this issue again (and in the process revealing his racism for what, the fourth or fifth time over?). Why is he still commentating football?

Exactly that, it doesn't matter what words you use, it hurts.

With regards to the AFL, they are a boys club, as described in Mick Warners book. A misogynistic, redneck bunch of characters who think money buys them class. They are a law unto themselves and should not be getting involved in any social issues due to hypocrisy.

I wasn’t around for Glenn James but I do remember the Goodes booing by Carlton and you seem to have a selective memory - Goodes instigated a reaction from the Carlton crowd…

Here’s what Wikipedia says about it:

“During a match against Carlton in May 2015, again during the AFL's annual Indigenous Round, Goodes celebrated a goal by performing an Indigenous war dance in which he mimed throwing a spear in the direction of the Carlton cheer squad. Goodes said after the incident that the dance was based on one he learned from under-16s Indigenous team the Flying Boomerangs, and that it was intended as an expression of Indigenous pride during Indigenous Round, not as a means of offending or intimidating the crowd.”

I cannot see how booing someone who throws an imaginary spear at you to celebrate a goal is considered racist because of the color of their skin. The crowd would have booed any player doing that. The crowd boos opposition players all the time - multiple times in a game. To yell racism at every act dilutes the anger at actual racist acts.

From memory the booing from the cheer squad (and others in the crowd) led to the spear throwing celebration not the other way around. The booing was inherent for the duration of the season and whilst I do not for 1 minute think that EVERY one who booed Goodesy was racist or acting in a racist capacity it's on the person who is being vilified to determine whether they are offended or deem it racism. Not on me to determine what will offend you. If Goodesy said he was offended & felt racially vilified well that's it and I'll back him or Eddie or any other indigenous player against what they perceive to be racism.

Rival supporters chased him out of the game, all because he dared to call out someone who abused him against Collingwood; a club that has had an appalling record with racism and the treatment of players of color. Like sheep other clubs supporters decided to join in and made all Aussie rules supporters look like a bunch of cretins.
