Alright i have ventured over here to give my two cents on ross lyon. short answer proceed with caution but If I were you I wouldn't be upset if he was appointed.

pros:
- easily the most tactically astute coach i have ever seen. will win 2-3 games a year on that alone.
- his teams always apply effort
- its hilarious the long running gags he has with the media (basically he just mocks them, they happily took pot shots back).
- great at cultivating relationships with star players. they love him.
- will get the best out of a list.
- when he likes a player, he will get the best out of a player.
- when he first arrived at freo he reinvigorated many players crowley, walters even pavlich and the club.
- gave us real direction when he first arrived.

cons:
- literally doesn't care about bad players. this results in his 'non favourites' becoming a little disassociated/upset/disinvested with the club. which is silly as developing 40+ players yields a higher mathematical success than 35 players.
- he burns out the staff and assistant coaches at a club.
- he burns out the fans after a while
- vic media love him but he legit started a covert war with the WA media. this was all set up by the first press conference in WA where the first question was "do you believe you've stabbed mark harvey in the back". after a while he locked them out of the club, mocked them. turns out its advantageous to have the media on your side. because i reckon he keeps his job at freo otherwise.
- the female staffer story where he was drunk and said something about budding boobs stains his reputation. however, given that adam simpson is thought of as an angel today despite being involved in a more disturbing thing during his playing days, look up north melbourne and boris the chicken its messed up, as well as wayne carey in the media, I think carlton will be fine.
- to smart for his own good

In other words he has good traits but if kept on too long he gets into fights with admin, staff and the poorer players on the list may crack the shits which hurt your culture long term. also players get burnt out.
Don't know if you follow the Premier League or anything like that but would you liken his approach to Mourinho?

Seems to follow a similar cycle: come in, immediate jump, 3 years in players and other staff are burned out by his style, he leaves and club needs to rebuild.

Difference being Mou Mou has had immense success in winning championships, whereas Ross has managed to run into generational teams right when he should've been having the said success.

We will have a problem if Ross Lyon comes in and on day 1 calls the Left Back Pocket a fat campaigner.

What is the point of this post?

Are you ranting? Are you putting forth something that you think is the problem? Are you complaining? Is this just opinion?

I genuinely do not understand what is your desired outcome here. Could you help me understand?

last time i checked its a discussion forum, its a bit of all of the above.

Ranting - yes, about the reports of players been played out of position, wanting to play here or there and are clearly not up to it. Hence my U11 comment
Opinion - of course its an opinion.
Desired outcome - to be the new director of football..... :)

Rob Harvey a good chance of coming to Carlton in 2022 as an assistant coach.
#Bluemour

He wants to work with Walsh, so he can witness an all-time ball accumulator win more than two Brownlows....

Do you bring in assistants for their game plan?
I'd have thought you mainly want their ability to connect with and communicate with players.
Some IP from past experience obviously helps too.

my thought (maybe not fully formed), is along the lines that the assistant needs to believe what they’re selling to be most effective at their job.

if I’m looking at Collingwood play now and it doesn’t mesh with what style I want as a head coach, I probably wouldn’t be interested in Harvey, which is no reflection on his competence.

Leppa doesn’t come across as a calm and considered personality, traits that are as high in importance in that role as anything else that is needed imo.

Look at Neil Balme, the quintessential pro in this role. Obviously good at what he does but is as calm and considered when talking as if sitting on the beach in a laidback bean bag sipping pina coladas.

I’d like to be pleasantly surprised but think his prickliness is better suited to coaching.

wasn’t Balme a nutcase?

Though you do need to consider that a coach (especially a good one) doesn't necessarily try and force a team to play to their ideal gameplan. Harvey might have other ideas he'd like to implement, but be lacking the personnel to do so, or the time to actually teach the players something drastically different. What usually happens with a caretaker coach? They "release the shackles", as it were, simplify the game, because they don't have the luxury of a full preseason to drill a new system.

How Collingwood are playing may not be how Harvey would choose to have us playing. They don't have a Weitering, a Walsh, a Harry or Charlie, a Cripps etc.

Coaches may have preferences and ingrained ideas about what will be effective. But a good coach will balance those against the realities of what they have to work with.

Massive NO to Robert Harvey. Friends seen him gambling at the TAB way too many times.

Someone with a history of backing long shots, trying to win against a stacked system?

Sounds like he's perfectly qualified to work at Carlton!!!

So Mourinho could be available in the next couple of years …..

I'm slightly put off by Lyon taking public pot shots at Collingwood before he's even announced in another job. Not a fantastic reflection on him.

On another note, there's probably no surer sign that he's confident of being our next coach.

Would you rather he lie and say all is good at Collingwood?
