That’s also why I don’t think he’ll take Dew’s job. They’re mates from a long way back. Dew single handedly won him a premiersii hi p

Dew is OOC at the end of next year though. So is Ratten.

He would take over if a contract isn’t renewed. That’s fair enough.

We’ve just got to try and get him. His mates are with us now and there is a historical argument that could appeal to his ego. Plus he lives just up the road from Moorabbin.

We’d need to be smart and respectful though. The manner of the approach is as important as the substance of it.

Maybe its the club rather than Battle. He's been played in a number of positions but just doesn't seem to fit our mix ATM.

Highly possible that another club would then ask the question. Then it becomes a matter of are we better off keeping Battle or do we think we can get a another player who better fits our needs for whatever we get in a trade.

Looks like we are looking for another youngish ruck/forward - so if we could get any of CCJ, Chol, McLean or Max Lynch then you'd have to think about trading Battle because at least he will have trade currency.
No way would we even consider trading Battle when we are short on key positional players who are talented.
Battle at 22 still has massive upside and if they need something for McLean it will be most probably what we get for compensation for Dunstan - considering he has been on there rookie list for 3yrs that should be more than good enough.

WHAT IS KING’S SUNS FUTURE?

GOLD Coast is still extremely optimistic Ben King will re-sign over the summer and push his time at the club past 2022.

And the million dollars of cap space the club saved when it moved Peter Wright to Essendon will help get that deal done.

King will wait until he returns to pre-season training to consider a new deal — he is on a two-year contract worth a total of $1.3 million — but he likes coach Stuart Dew and wants to build something special with his teammates.

But any delay in putting pen to paper would see a lot of clubs, including Essendon and even Collingwood, come from the clouds and create a possible bidding war if he remained unsigned at the end of 2022.

The Suns took a kicking for moving on Wright, who couldn’t get a kick in last year’s reserves practice matches.

They are paying around $150,000 of what was a $650,000-per-season salary for 2022 and 2023, with Wright now on a three-year deal that spreads out that cash over a longer term.

The ball is in Ben’s court. All this talk about Gold Coast being optimistic is just vacuous spin.

The reference to Collingwood and Essendon is standard media speculation.

If Ben wants to play with his brother and St Kilda he has to declare it. He has to nominate the club and tell the Suns that Saints is the only club where he wants to be traded to. Ben holds the cards here. It’s his call to make.

Sounds like the Suns are fretting by declaring they are “extremely optimistic”. Please. They are at the poker table and you can see what type of hand they think they have.

Too many people are seeing Ben King as the Holy grail IMO.
I can see us burning too much to land him , then having big problems elsewhere.
The concept probably doesnt hold up either- We had Locket and Loewe for a few years with other gun players and could not hoist the cup. Will the Kings be as good as those two? Hawthorn went well with 2 star forwards as did Richmond. Eagles with Darling and Kennedy, Geelong only the one flag with Billy G and GOD. Those teams were chockful of top level players as well. He would be a good pickup but it seems unlikely and other team factors would have to be considered.

The question is how do we take our midfield to another level?

Can Gresh and Clark step up?
Will other youngsters do it?
Do we target an older guy like Guthrie?
Do we play the waiting game with drafted kids?
Can we get more out of Crouch and Jones?

I see that Cerra is probably going to the Blues.

Right now I'd say both (Ross and Dunstan) are in the 3rd round range - whatever free agency band that equates to.

That is a straight up equation, based on little other than cash and where that ranks them.

If we were to re-sign, miss finals and finally pull the trigger, being contracted, a year older and potentially in poor form/injured (granted one of those if/hope-type scenario), our hand goes from taking a 3rd now, to taking whatever we can because they are no longer required.

Out of interest, of Ross, Dunstan and Billings, using only the current list, who is the hardest to cover?
Probably Billings, the other two cant kick with any precision or reliability

Well, thats a clear message to the recruiters- get a ruckman who can go forward. Might need to make a space for 2 small forwards though. Higgins and Butler or maybe Gresham.

And give his mum free tickets , right Gringo?

As if they’d be less than a third round pick. That’s nonsense no matter how low you rate them. I’d say possibly Seb Ross as he’s playing an easier role to cover but also think with all we lose something.

He should chat to GAJ about earning 1 million / year to play in a rubbish side with no culture or fabric.
Don’t shoot me but there youth looks better than ours by a fair margin. If they can hold them all I think they will be a pretty amazing side.

I have every bit of confidence that Clark and Gresh will step up.

Could definitely see Bytel, Byrnes and Connolly going up another level.

I reckon we’ve got enough older mids traded in like Crouch / Hill / Jones, wouldn’t want any more 25+ mids, like Parker or Guthrie, personally.

I say yes play the waiting game. Our list is already good enough for finals IMO, and that’s with a lot of potential growth already from young players. Invest in NGA/Top 10 pick who can ideally play at the level next year.

Cerra most likely Carlton. Coops on his FB page reckons he won’t go there if they hire Lyon which is an interested albeit not reliable take. For arguments sake, say Cerra doesn’t go Carlton, I could see us swooping in. Fits in nicely with Coff, Higgins, Clark and Pato from 2017 draft. That being said - I don’t think anyone here wants us to give up our first or much more trade collateral to Freo, so don’t reckon it’ll get done.

Not sure where the massive up side is - we've been short of a tall defender and a tall forward for most games this year and Battle has not been selected to play in either position.

Fills in a little bit but the selectors clearly don't think he's the answer. I agree - given his lack of agility I reckon he's too short for a key forward and is not that great one on one which limits him in defence.

Of the four I listed I reckon McLean would be last on my list - in order CCJ (a former Pick 20 so could cost too much), Mabior Chol (more forward than ruck - would be my preferred) Max Lynch (more ruck than forward) then McLean.

So given our list profile and deficiencies would I trade Battle in order to get Chol - where do I sign!!!

They’ve got some great kids and added plenty of mature support but still play like a bunch of insipid cabbages... maybe not forever.

Well you just lost any credibility with me , Quoting Coops FMD

Coops just repeating what the WA media are saying.

Xavier Ellis and Ryan Daniels (best footy journo in WA) were saying on their podcast that Cerra wasn't a fan of Ross Lyon and was relieved when he left Freo so if Ross gets the Carlton coaching job, it might be enough to sway Cerra elsewhere.

How could they afford him anyway

The Herald Sun article suggests GC's offer for him to stay will hit the million dollar mark.

We wouldn't be able to offer that type of money.

If they are willing to pay an Aldi version of Max King ;) , a million a season they are welcomed to him. Maybe Dusty is worth that, maybe one or two others, but Ben King?

I think we would offer him something around the Max mark, on a multi year deal (more than three). Up to him.

While we wouldn't be able to offer as much on his contract, they'd make more money off the field marketed as a powerful key forward duo rather than individuals. Something you hope they are considering.
