With the rule changes, no need to promote Snelling. Although will then need to do it next year.

Given our success with SSP and mid season draft selections, I suspect he’ll be upgraded now so we have more rookie spaces to have them to play with for next year

Seems to happen quite often these days. Their really isn't any difference between rookie and senior list now

Soon I'd say it will be scrapt
It should be. SSPs, mid-season rookies and alt talent make sense to incentivise and have them outside the cap or something. The rest is a meaningless distinction.

Anyone else see the significant shift in the balance of the make up of the list?

OUTS;

x 2 key defenders (C.Hooker [fwd], P.Ambrose)
x 2 small forwards (N.Cahil, I.Mosquito)
x 2 small utiities (D.Zaharakis, L.Johnson

To point out the obvious but are we happy with the (current) depth in those positions?

KPD Stewart; Laverde, (Z.Reid, A.Francis [Fwd])
Small fwd; Tippa, D.Smith, Snelling [A.Waterman, T.Hird, M.Guelfi (Def)
Small Utilities; A.McGrath (Mid/Def), B.Ham (Mid/Fwd), Caldwell (Mid/Fwd) S.Durhaam (Mid/Def), A.Perkins (Fwd/Mid)

I think it is safe to assume that we will grab at least one small forward this year, even if it is a rookie for one year and see what happens. More running power seems to be a focus shift on our recent incomings so we surely go down the same route there. I hope we steer clear of 'utilities' as I eloquently put it. pure mids or pure forwards please. Deffensively we seem reliably stacked even if we are out to get one dour defender in (assumingly to release Redman, Ridley into more offensive weapons).

Zac Reid should be treated as a new draftee, and I hope we give him every opportunity to play AFL football in 2022.

Anyways, just some food for thought

I look forward to seeing what way Dodoro and the team go with fixing the small forward position

Does the Weightman, Pickets, Butters cloud the judgement and jump at a small forward like Rachelle or J.Clarke at 13 ?

Or do we stay strong with the best big mid and recruit a small forward later on I think someone mentioned Paul Curtis and I think a Jesse Motlop (Freo can match after 40 so we would need to trade up into that) or Lachlan Rankine can be added to that list hopefully available at our 3rd round

There hasn't been much mention of many small forward mature ages ready to go that are jumping out

Or do we hold on with what we've got and rely heavily on the Daveys being at a quality we need and be able to play the small forward role at AFL level

It's after 20 this year, after 40 next year.

You missed from the key defender depth Zerk, Brand and McBride [Fwd]. Definitely not an area we need to invest in. Johnson was also recruited as a small forward.

I think our clear needs are small forward, outside mid and one more fast lockdown small back wouldn't go astray (even with Kelly). You could definitely take hybrids who have midfield potential for the flanking roles.

Do we need an outside mid?

Cox, Durham, Cutler* & Ham* have all played that role, arguably Merrett is best in the role too.

I'd want a more sturdy defensive midfielder that can release Merrett more, and with Kelly coming in as a more defensive player, that might also release Redman to come higher up the ground as well.

I think we need a Small Forward & Defensive Midfielder (Hewett would be ideal as a FA) as our two main priorities. Ideally the defensive midfielder is a guy who's a genuinely good player, which is quite doable around our first selection.

Keep the rookie draft though for players on 1 rather than 2 year contracts.
Good point. Is this the only discernible difference between Rookie and senior listed players? Aside from base pay rate.

They already have tiers for base pay rate within ND, I.e 1st round pick earns more, perhaps they could just change that to facilitate it all within the ND.
Something like:
1st rnd: 3 years on $A
2nd rnd: 2 years on $B
3rd rnd: 2 years on $C
4th rnd on: 1 year on $D

All the players mentioned have been part of an issue for us in that good sides actually exploited their lack of strength around the contest.
We need Cox and Durham to find a bit more core strength. For Cox so he is not run off the line of the footy so easily and for Durham not to be brushed away in tackles.
We need a workhorse midfielder. Someone who is as hard as Stringer in the center to carry out that work around the ground and do a bit of blocking. They do not have to be outright defensive .

I'm picking the club will continue to build the backline for the future so Reid will play more often than not and I wouldn't be surprised if Perkins gets a few runs across the half back line to accelerate his overall development.

I'm also backing Hurley to come back for a solid swan song

If available will play:
Reid - Lav - Redman
Hind - Ridley - Kelly
Caldwell - Merrett - Hepp
Stringer - Jones - Snelling
AMT - Wright - Hurley
Draper - Parish - McGrath

Cox - Shiel - Langford - Perkins

Solid 22, lacks small forwards and the overall general defensive mindset needs to improve.

Depth - will probably play 5+ games each at a minimum:
Back: Cutler - Stewart - BZT
Mid: Clark - Durham - Bryan - Ham
Forward: Smith - Chol
Utility: Guelfi - Francis

Overall it's a solid depth group, forward line is thin both with KPF's and small forwards, Chol might help but he isn't the saviour he is just depth and dont be surprised if we have a few injuries in the KPF roles that Stewart finds himself back in the F50.

More Development Required, might pick up a game or 2:
Back: Brand,
Mid: Phillips
Forward: Baldwin - Hird
Utility: Eyre
+ Draft picks

Ideally one or two of these can make a leap over the summer and join the depth group.

Overall the list is in decent shape, Geelong aren't trying to poach any of our players so that tells me we aren't too old. And yeah more small forwards would be nice but I'm not sure we need to spend $1m+ per season on a KPF, lets not forget we were the 4th highest scoring team last season but I will concede we need to find 30 goals next season with Hooker now working the streets. Ultimately, we will make a leap if we improve our defence across the ground, it's that simple.

I’m thinking long-term in the sense that we might already have the guys there, they just need to mature physically to be able to hold their own in a contested sense.

Whereas we simply don’t have that sturdy defensive midfielder. The anti-stringer basically, who is going to play a genuine midfield role with a big body. They may or may not be a massive accumulator, or super damaging.

Keep the rookie draft though for players on 1 rather than 2 year contracts.
Or you could make it that every player taken in the fifth round or later automatically gets a 1 year deal.

Would have some teams passing on picks to get to the 5th round which would be odd. Not sure it’s a bad thing though.

Another cut off point could be where picks no longer have point value a 2 year deal isn’t required.

Nah, keep the one pass, you're out rule.

Aren't you describing Dylan Clarke?
