Looking at the below, positionally I don't think we have any glaring list gaps. We're fairly well stocked for talls across all lines, we've got 13 small/med mids, 6 small/med forwards, and 9 small/med defenders. You could argue we could add to our specialist small/med forwards.

In terms of age brackets, obviously our mids are old and then we have quite a few young/inexperienced mids with nothing in between. It seems to be a pretty similar story with our forwards.

Ideally, we'd bring in a quality mid/fwd in the 25-30 age bracket or two, then take best available at the draft with our 2nd round picks.

Note that these ages are as of 1st March 2022.

Why Brander keeps getting mentioned as a legitimate key defence option is beyond me considering hes spent precisely zero time in the role.

I mean he has the attributes for it and played there as a junior so its not a crazy idea.

Out of interest which players did you assign into each positional category?

Ko

Kolo at CHB ha. Might as well throw in the towel now. O'Connor and Tuohy definite starters for mine.
O'Connor SDK Bews
Stewart Blicavs Henry

Tuohy as defender off the bench
SDK needs solid experience around him, not blithering. Kolo as 9th emergency, Atkins emergency too. Like Tom, but he is Scarlo mould
We need more confidence and surety out of defense.

I’d get all of Kolo, Blicavs and Atkins out of the back six if possible. If we are going to move forward in that area of the ground, they need replacing. Unfortunately, with Henderson retiring and Krueger moving on we are very light on for key defenders. We may need to persevere with Blicavs for at least another year unless we can secure a better option via a trade.

I’d start next year with -

B: Bews, Blicavs, Henry
HB: Stewart, De Koning, O’Connor

I’d also hope to give Stevens some games next year but that may be on a wing rather than half back. We do need to recruit though another tall defender and a small defender too. Atkins and Bews are both limited. Bews the better of the two.

Doesn’t directionally change much. I’m interested in looking at a longer time period. Maybe last ten years. Will have a look tonight.

Are you sure your DVI calculations on list is working as intended. I'm getting the 60% DVI remaining for Geelong

I think your 10 year overview will be ugly view. The last decade we haven't got much value from our DVI spent. Sure our total wasn't great to start with but our games per DVI would be pretty shocking

He was never used as a genuine key defender he played as the loose interceptor for a handful of games and hasnt done it at all in 4 years on a list, would be a very questionable recruitment if we are holding our hopes on him holding down a key post down back.

Exactly! Laughable stuff. Has spent the majority of his AFL career to date on the wing and been utterly underwhelming.

If he had any clue how to play defence hed have played there when Barrass and McGovern were both out of the side, they turned to kids.

Guys a forward or nothing and I'd lean more towards the nothing classification, looks like a headless chook on the wing.

Look I’m not a big fan of Kolo… but next year at times he will be our no 1 or 2 key defender at times.. I don’t agree with it but Blitz at times will play some kind of roll as a ruck or mid etc then that will leave Kolo controlling as our no 1 key defender, as long as with SDK ( which I’m excited to see him play in his natural habitat in defence)
Plus we have to look at if Blitz gets injured etc
Which why I hope we us a rookie or late pick in picking a key defender for the future..

SDK needs 10kg to even be remotely in the conversation to be ready physically and we've never been a side that just throws a kid to the wolves, will spend majority of 2022 in the twos.

I mean the players that are being paid that amount would be the B grade players , to put it in perspective someone like Stewart and Bews would be around or a little bit more than that …not a rookie kid

Taylor gone off the deep end

One can take this with a grain of salt but could use it to give an indication of potential salaries - the Herald Sun did their annual 100 top paid players:

"The Herald Sun’s Rich List is assembled following hundreds of calls to leading industry figures to provide a full picture of the top-100 paid players in the game.

It might not be popular with players given they remain sensitive about their salaries, and yet with only a handful of players paid over $1 million per season, the AFL’s stars are far from overpaid.

The Rich List figures are presented in $50,000 bands to reflect the fact many salaries have performance bonuses they may or may not meet, with salaries often spiking or falling over a single season of a longer contract to help clubs balance the books.

Some AFL stars are missing from this list, with Joel Selwood sacrificing to keep the Cats list together and paid around $550,000."

These are the Geelong guys on that list:

100. Tom Stewart
$575,000-$625,000
Headed for his third-straight All-Australian jumper, underlining what a super recruit he has been out of South Barwon in the Geelong Football League. The Stephen Wells masterstroke is a brick wall across half back and played one of the best games Chris Scott has seen from a defensive flanker in the after-the-siren win over Western Bulldogs. Provided incredible value all-round.

99. Mark Blicavs
$575,000-$625,000
The ultra-reliable tall is one of the AFL’s most flexible players. Chris Scott can put him on the opposition’s best forward or thrust him into the ruck and even the wing in a running role. He has been rewarded by winning two best and fairest gongs as well as a third-place last year. Opted for security when he signed a five-year deal in 2018 tying him to the Cats until 2023.

83. Cameron Guthrie
$600,000-$650,000
The no-frills onballer has picked up where he left off last season when he stamped himself as an A-Grade midfielder. Guthrie, who remains without a contract for next year, won All-Australian and best and fairest honours in 2020 and has been arguably even more important this year when Dangerfield went down. Tough and reliable, expect Guthrie to sign the biggest deal of his life on his next contract in reward for his stellar form.

82. Tom Hawkins
$600,000-$650,000
Is putting together another exceptional season which sees the superstar goal kicker heading towards a fourth All-Australian jumper. He is in great physical condition, creating goals with his ruck work on top of his obvious class and marking power. Kicked at least one goal in every game this season and is renowned for his selflessness. A champion forward.

41. Mitch Duncan
$700,000-$750,000
Would have been high up in Norm Smith Medal contention in last year’s Grand Final before the Dustin Martin second-half takeover. One of the best field kicks in the competition who poses a constant threat in the forward half. May not have some of the accolades as some of his Geelong teammates but he has been rewarded in his contracts for his loyalty to the club after turning down offers from the two Western Australian clubs

10. Jeremy Cameron
$850,000 - $900,000
Some may have argued the Cats sold the farm for the Coleman medallist, but is there any doubt now the trade was worth it? Cameron has been red hot since returning from his double hamstring blow and is steering the Cats towards another deep finals finish. In almost career-best form and worth every penny.

6. Patrick Dangerfield
$900,000 - $950,000
Has become the face of the Cats since his free agency move back home to Victoria. Played through the pain and restriction of a secret groin injury last year and is the obvious candidate to take over from Joel Selwood as captain if he hands over the skipper’s armband next year. Still one of the most influential stars in the game either midfield or forward.

And for comparisons sake, here's a guy taken the same draft as Clark and if these 2 are on near the same amount it would be a joke - though maybe it also says something about GC and what they have to offer younger guys to stay with the club

Jack Lukosius
Gold Coast

$600,000-$650,000
Lukosius is a strange beast, one of football’s most piercing kicks and capable of being the most damaging defender in the league given his height, marking ability, athleticism and capacity to cut opponents apart with that silky right boot. He isn’t a complete player yet but he has plenty of time. He certainly isn’t desperate to race home to Adelaide but like Ben King, he will want to see improvement at the Suns before he signs past his current deal to the end of 2022.
