Unrestricted free agent Trent Dumont is leaning towards leaving North Melbourne after tumbling down the club’s midfield pecking order.

It’s understood Dumont, 26, is yet to reveal his intentions to the Kangaroos but is unlikely to remain at Arden St.

He is one of four out-of-contract North players whose futures are on hold, along with 234-game veteran Shaun Atley, back-up big man Tom Campbell and mid-season draftee Charlie Ham.

Dumont can walk to his club of choice without requiring a trade to be brokered.

Essendon has previously shown some interest in the South Australian product, but neither Adelaide nor Port Adelaide is expected to be interested this time around.

Adelaide defender Jake Kelly will exercise his free agency rights to sign with the Bombers, while Sydney’s restricted free agent George Hewett is set to sign a long-term deal with Carlton.

Veteran Kangaroos defender Robbie Tarrant is also going to accept a two-year contract to cross to Richmond.

The bumper 2021 free agency crop largely re-signed at their club, including Rory Laird, Patrick Cripps, Zach Merrett, Cam Guthrie, Josh Kelly, Max Gawn, Jack Billings, Luke Parker and Marcus Bontempelli.
North invested heavily in the midfield as the first plank in its list overhaul, with Jy Simpkin, Luke Davies-Uniacke, Tarryn Thomas, Will Phillips and Tom Powell already giving them new-found depth.

The Roos are also certain to select on-ball ace Jason Horne-Francis with their first pick this year, even if it follows potential bids on father-son prospects Nick Daicos (Collingwood) and Sam Darcy (Western Bulldogs).

Dumont finished top five in North Melbourne’s best and fairest award in 2018-19 but fell out of the midfield rotation this year and played almost exclusively as a wingman.

He was never a full-time on-baller but carved out a reputation as the club’s best defensive midfielder, who could also win his share of the Sherrin.

Yet to reveal his intentions? Interesting take on where things are at.

Suggests compo coming our way though.

Have said this elsewhere but he would be a solid citizen in a midfield crying out for a defensive runner to provide some cover for more offensively minded players. Gold Coast would release Touk Miller to get more forward of the footy, GWS defensive cover for Kelly and Taranto, Blues as a defensive centre man and cover for Walsh. There is a career there, and ideally he is an inside mid IMO. Obviously lacks the tricks of the elite but he has always done pretty well under a ruckmans nose.

Watching this with great interest. Would prefer to keep him though and let him tag or sweep stoppages in the centre

I’d say dumont would be better for the blues than hewett

Hmm I can think of a club's midfield that fits that exact profile. They wear blue and white. Pretty sure the colours are striped. Vertical stripes that is. And with hopefully temporary pinstripes.

I don’t see the point of the question. Considering a trade is a magnitude of difference from doing a trade.

And why would you trade the best player ever at the peak of his powers?

I just don’t understand the point of your question.

I just want to understand if you think two good players is better than one exceptional player, this is our chance to get (in our opinion) the best kid in the land this year, or trade it out for a couple of kids we don't think are the best.

No, Hewett a significant upgrade on Dumont. IMHO - and clearly the HO of all the other clubs, too.
Strong disagree but that’s cool. I think dumont is exactly what they need. Hard working grunt work two way runner

Before you lot of dills out there start even thinking about trading Goldie, please look at the last six years of trade threads and how silly those posters looked who proposed getting rid of him when he inevitably followed up with stellar season after stellar season.

Post about Goldie trades at your own peril.

There is worse than him still on our list worthy of delisting .

Would Bailey Scott be of interest to Gold Coast?

Future first plus Bailey for pick 3.

Also I am pretty sure it’s a contract user for Goldie and he tends to play even better in those years.
