I’m not sure any list in the competition had a drop off from their second to third best midfielder quite like us. Cerra and Hewett will Be enormous additions.
Will make it easier for the next players too. Adding Cerra & Hewett to Walsh and Cripps means guys like Kennedy/Dow/O’Brien/Cuningham/Setters/Williams/etc aren’t getting as much heat. Especially as Walsh and Hewett are high workrate players, and while Cerra isnt to the same degree, he’s no slouch either.

Kind of like how Shiel was much better as the 3rd/4th mid at GWS rather than trying to be the big dog at Essington when he arrived (even though now he might be relegated further down, as a hf/mid).

Going to be fascinating to watch over preseason how the structure looks; who’s getting minutes and where, what’s the balance of inside/in-out/wing players selected, what are the mid-fwd rotations like, does Cripps player lower overall minutes (say 80%) with the aim of having a higher impact when on the field, etc.

Diasgree with the Hewett comment that he wants to play an attacking midfielder. I don't think he's the kind of player that wants to play the game on his terms. He's a team first player and will do what is adjudged best for the team.

I think Hewett would have been low paid due to their cap issues, and they could not reward him his due.

So Carlton would have come knocking saying we can offer you what you deserve. He would have seen that the list is a tempting one and felt stars aligned.

What we offered him is exactly what he deserved. Good, clean, hard, consistent players are rare. He will do what coaches will ask of him and do it well more often than not.

It's players like Hewett that makes it easier for a coach to instill a gameplan.

Fantastic pick-up. Very astute. You can obviously try to attract the best players, thats easy, as all recruiters would want them. However, it is recruiting role players and missing pieces that expresses the skill set of a recruiter.

It’s guys like Hewett that make Sam Walsh even better.

think About that for a moment…

Well ok

Well ok then, a *tall* Wayne Harmes type :)
Sorry to say but Wayne Harmes was full on attack, even when he played in the back pocket, he was flat out attacking. Hewett is more your accountable for his man first and foremost and constructive after that.

Agree the midfield has been strengthened significantly, more add skill too,
list management & trade periods this year and next year will be interesting.
Austin will be busy, quite a few players will have to be moved on or delisted.

Who are these 'Kane Cornes', 'Tom Brownes', 'Gerard Whateleys', 'Damian Barretts', 'Mitch Clearys', etc that people don't want to know and talk about...

That's true, however the form Kennedy showed at the latter part of the year shows he belongs.

So we really should be looking at our midfield as:

Walsh, Cripps with the addition of Cerra, Hewett and Kennedy!

Dow also showed progress which I hope with added quality around him, plus Voss in charge will get him to the next level.

Since when is it fun to be self deprecating and suggest we are worse than what we are?

Is Walsh in the top 3 mids in the comp? Yes.

Is Cripps in the top 20, provided he can recapture form?
Yes.

Is a 21yo Adam Cerra going to be in the top 50 midfielders in the comp?
Definitely

See how funny it is to you when we finish top 6 next year.

It is not even close to the third best midfield. Seriously.

Cripps literally won an AFLPA Trophy at his best and Walsh just polled 30 votes - I’m not going to argue any further but clearly you don’t rate Cripps (you don’t back out captain in to turn it around) or Cerra if you don’t think we have a great midfield now.

All I will say is let’s revisit this at round 5 and see how the midfield group is travelling. No point arguing about speculation.

Our midfield is a lot better with the additions of Cerra and Hewett. Still nowhere near top 3 in the AFL, perhaps you should dispense with the wild speculation?

Clearly I beg to differ and don’t believe it to be a wild speculation. It’s okay to be excited about acquisitions of talent and to suggest your midfield group will be one of the best when you add an A Grader to it and get one of the best mids in the past 30 years as your senior coach.

Usually when someone concedes that there’s no point arguing, mature parties will drop the argument. Speak to you early next year buddy.

As much as I would like our midfield to be top 3, it’s too hard without a top 3 ruckman

There would be a fair chance that the Swans would match if we did as it would have meant that they would have received less compensation.

Fine balancing act for them, balancing the books whilst maximising their return.
That's what they were saying though, swans didn't really want him or couldn't keep him (who knows if it's true)

Carlton, Sydney and Hewett would’ve had discussions weeks ago, if not months ago regarding this.

Hewett likely looking for more time as an attacking midfielder.

Sydney need to shed space due to the Buddy deal. They have promising youth in similar positions as Hewett who can play his role for less than what Hewett commands in the open market.

Carlton need a hard edge in the Suddenly, in one off season we add a B grade and an A grade mid to our on ball rotation, all for Pick 6 and some change. Our midfield in 2022 looks like:
Walsh, Cripps, Cerra, Kennedy, Dow, Hewett, Cuningham

With Martin, Williams, Fisher and probably Stocker all playing cameo roles.
Hewett can go in when Kennedy cannot, Kennedy can rest forward, Cripps can rotate more often and play anaerobically as suited to his huge frame and Cerra adds class, precision and speed to our midfield.

If Crippa returns to his best, we literally go from a bottom 6 midfield to a top 3 (behind Dees and probably the Dogs)

Hewett, probably a 3 year deal type player rather than someone you’d give 4. Carlton know this, but to avoid a trade and lose valuable draft capital we offer terms that hit a late 2nd round compo band (4 years over X amount)

Effectively, Sydney shed salary cap space and gain a draft pick. Carlton retain their 2nd rounder which, arguably is/should’ve been Hewett’s value and add a hard nosed midfielder with clean hands to their midfield rotation.

Surely this is a joke ??
