The player doesn’t want that. He wants his new club to do a deal so his old club is left with something, and not completely nuked. You can see the hate towards CCJ now - imagine if he left for nix.

I don’t care about the supporters feelings. They’ll boo him if Richmond get a fair deal regardless. We’re trying to help them out with Taz. Can’t have it all when they zero leverage.

We appeared to play extra hardball with Ziebell, Brown and Tarrant over that 2023 list space so I'd guess we're projecting things to be very tight for list spots around then if all emerging talent develops as hoped.

Remember that over the 2019-2021 period the list managers appear to have cleared out every contract signed before their tenure that they didn't want to extend.

Based on this I think 2024 is a bridge too far unless the deal was sweetened even more, we're talking #19 and a future 2nd or something for our future 3rd.

I think that is a fair enough stance with the oldies.

Excluding Dumont, Atley and Campbell who don't have contracts atm I would say... Goldstein, Hall, Ziebell and Cunnington probably don't have 3 years of petrol left. Guys who are are currently battlers in the side... Anderson, Atu, Walker. I assume they are waiting for Polec's contract to expire. We can still find players to let go, but it is going to get a lot harder.

I think after this year we will probably be making minimal changes each year for a while. But I think the aim would be to replace that bottom 10-12 with like good quality picks so your depth is developing good quality talent rather than battlers who turn over the ball a lot.

Wonder if there is a KPD who they are overpaying who may work as a substitute and who, given our list position, we may be more willing to play ball in terms of a longer contract.

Are you talking about the Suns?

based on footywire they have what appears to be 3 KPD, one is 30, one is signed up till 2025, one is more than we'd be willing to pay.

DMac two years or good luck somewhere else. Understand his position, but if he can't back himself in after getting an extra year and potentially more game time, not sure it seems he's backing himself in. GC laughing asking for a future 2nd.

Again, unless there's a strong likelihood a player better than CCJ is at the PSD, we pick him up there. He's getting offered 4, so clearly we've demonstrated we value him.

All in Sunbury can GAGF. Joyce era is over. Walk away from deals we don't need to bend for. We don't owe oppo clubs anything.

Most of us want him, but not for three years if he’s not up to the task. 2 years is pretty fair for a current non-best 22 player at an average club.
Even 2 years is generous really, but you've got to make it worth his while to move.

3 years for a 24 yo fringe player is no go.

Keep holding please North.

I repeat - Melbourne watched us slowly lower our tolerance for the Ben Brown trade knowing they had hand.

We have even more with the PSD and Tarrant factors.

This whole trade for Tarrant talk I don't get, do we really think we would get less of a compensation pick than Hawks got for Smith? If compensation is a 3rd round pick, like Smith was last year, Richmond isn't going to salvage much of the Chol value and would be in our best interest to see that pick get knock behind our pick 20.

DM logic is flawed. Rookie drafted player, 6 years on a list and 62 games, OOC next year in a club trying to dump him, gets an extra year and pushes for 3.

If we were not willing to give BB an extra year, then I am not sure how we can price getting pick 19 being worth a few hundred thousand.

Re Macpherson: I wouldn't pull the trigger if it's for our future 2nd. Not enough gain for us for taking him on board.
Think the issue is Knowing what Mcph brings Right Now
As distinct from the potential of a draft pick

same situation as CCJ, he may not have played much but he is known quantity

Yep, need to walk away if they all parties aren't happy.

Wonder if GC came to us thinking Joyce was still in charge. (Btw for all the stuff I'm slinging towards Joyce, driving up contracts for DeGoey and Martin looks to have at least some benefit)

If the player or deal involving 19 gets you a good player, the 3 years will not be an issue. It is a calculated risk. List spots and salary cap are just as important list building tools as draft picks, if used wisely. If Macpherson gives good service, even better.

If the reports of our offering a future pick for CCJ are correct that suggests we're only going near 2021 #38 in the trade once the search for another pick inside rounds 1-2 is complete.

These are the current likely incomings vs outgoings we have to make work:

Garner
2021 #1

Tyson
2021 #20

Atley or Dumont
2021 #38

Tarrant
Coleman-Jones

Where we appear to be trying to track:

Garner
2021 #1

Tyson
2021 #19

Atley
2021 #20

Dumont
McPherson

Tarrant
Coleman-Jones

Remember the above tables are just net ins/outs not trades.

In that scenario #38 won't be taken to the draft and can be traded. Not necessarily directly for CCJ though.

We may still want to offset it with a future 3rd or 4th if it's with Richmond.

Or we could trade it to another club for a future 2nd rounder or multiple future 3rd rounders.
