The AFL is expected to finally embrace an 18-team AFLW competition for the 2022-23 season when it announces expansion plans at midday on Thursday.
The league has not yet informed those four teams - Essendon, Port Adelaide, Sydney and Hawthorn - that they will be in the competition next year.

But the Herald Sun understands the AFL will make the declaration that every team will have its own women’s side for a 2022-23 competition that will start at the end of next year.

The four teams put in detailed submissions which were assessed by the AFL Commission at its two-day meeting last week.

And while there will be significant concerns about the dilution of talent in coming seasons the reality is the league cannot continue holding out sides like Hawthorn, who have battled for years to gain entry to the AFLW.

Cheers for the news.

How on Earth will Patrikios ever play again? She won't change her mind and suddenly get vaccinated and then head off to Essendon, that would just be taking the piss and a real f-you to St Kilda (in all honesty she already has), who has done nothing but support her.

And losing Priest and Cutting wouldn't just be a kick in the plums, it would completely cut them off. I can see how massive it would be for Cutting to be based in SA again.

But geez this is all salt in the wounds of a struggling club. It's like stealing from the homeless.
Essendon or not, an impressionable 20-year-old girl changing her mind doesn't seem so implausible to me. If she was a 29-year-old grown ass (former) ICU nurse, I'd expect her decisions to be less prone to revision.

Wouldn't have thought Port Adelaide will be in a position to make an especially hard push for Hannah Priest, unless their list of Crows defectors is a little light on.

Unless the rules are written in a way to stop it the Saints or another struggling club could be vulnerable, which is a real pity because it should be the better teams supplying the bulk of the players to expansion teams both from a numbers and quality perspective.

As the skipper I actually think Priest would feel an obligation to St Kilda, but that the other players mentioned in the. Aeiiis articles above might each be tempted for a variety of reasons. This doesn’t necessarily mean they will go but just they would be clear and obvious targets for the new clubs.

FTFY.

Below is something not published in the Herald Sun, though it isn't any less accurate than numerous reports from previous expansion periods wherein Lily Mithen's move to Geelong, for example, was deemed a fait accompli.

It is purely an interpretation of each club's priorities, in terms of signing players who are currently on an AFLW list. It is not a commentary on each player's intentions, nor does it address prospects who aren't currently on an AFLW list.

ESSENDON are extremely optimistic about Georgia Patrikios playing AFLW football this time next year. They hope to land her alongside Ally Anderson, Georgie Prespakis, and Ashleigh Riddell to form what some are calling the "GAGA" midfield. If Patrikios doesn't come around, they will target Maddy Prespakis to lead the on-ball unit, but with some reluctance due to Carlton's preparedness to retain her.

HAWTHORN are expected to hone in on the players Bec Goddard and list manager Mitch Cashion believe to be the league's most underrated. This includes Tayla Harris, in whom the Bombers and the Swans are also very interested.

PORT ADELAIDE will approach every player currently listed with the Crows. In the interests of brevity, the "Others on the Radar" section focuses on South Australians who may be lured back to the Festival State. The Power also plan to pounce on Chloe Scheer if she gets homesick at the Cattery.

The SYDNEY SWANS want to build a squad around experienced leaders who can engage with their minds and their hearts, as well as unique individuals who exchange ideas, thoughts and energy. They will particularly look to the GWS Giants' dramatic improvement in the second AFLW season as a blueprint.
Wow - all those names and not a Dogs player amongst them.
Dogs fans would be happy with that considering the players we lost during the last round of expansion.

Swans will announce tomorrow that Scott Gowans will be their first AFLW senior coach and will also take on a role as Head of Women's Coaching Development.

QBE will be announced as the front of jumper sponsor as part of an AFLW Principal Partner and also we have reached 4000 AFLW members.

From my perspective it will be in terraria g to see how Gowans goes, he certainly was a surprise COVID casualty and I had expected him to get appointed to a top job (in Victoria) since.

It will be interesting whether he leaves Collingwood midseason as is often the case when a coach is appointed elsewhere.

Sydney may be a able to use his influence with NM and Collingwood players to attract some start up players.

It will be interesting to see who Essendon appoints and whether they have a strong background in women’s football.

Already gone at the Pies. Replaced this week by Scott Selwood (in a dual AFL-AFLW role) who will look after the midfield.

Noooo! Take NM players not pies!

I know Goddard will be at the Hawks, but I look forward to the other clubs receiving the same backlash and vitriol Dal Santo received for being a male coach 🙄

Who wants to start on Sydney and Gowans?

Which is ridiculous. You select the best person for the job. If it’s a Male, it’s a male. If it’s a female, it’s a female.

Difference is, Gowans has an actual background in women's footy, opposed to Dal Santo who had none.

Saints didn't get backlash for hiring a male coach. They got backlash for treating the AFLW senior coaching role as a development opportunity by giving it to Dal Santo. The backlash is from parachuting a man into one of the most senior positions available in women's footy, coaches like Steve Symonds and Gowans rightfully don't receive the same backlash.

If they ran a competitive recruitment process do you seriously think Dal Santo would have got the role over one of the below suggestions.

How is Polatajko pronounced?

A lot of those players on the Hawthorn list play in the Hawks VFL team and I wonder if some of them have signed short term contracts knowing the Hawks were coming into the comp.

Agree

Good point. But on the other hand that's like saying a female should never coach a mens team if they haven't done so already. Does it really matter? I don't think so. Countless sports teams/nations have men coaching women and women coaching men. It doesn't bother me and it doesn't bother them.

Hopefully all coaches never stop developing in their roles, but I understand your point. You probably mean "stepping stone" in terms of coaching? And yes I agree with that and hope that isn't the case here. I still haven't seen or heard the quote from the coach or club where this has been stated though. Or is the "stepping stone" thing just bogus speculation?
A competitive recruitment process, well that's on the Saints if they didn't conduct that, but still has nothing to do with the sexism backlash they copped. A club deep in debt and making COVID cutbacks hires a club legend who might also be multitasking... some people need to grow up and stop trying to be outraged at anything. We literally just had a female coach previously and people are screaming "sexism", ugh. Peace everyone.

FWIW I think Dal Santo will be a very good AFLW coach and make a lot of people eat their words. I think everyone is in agreement that he doesn't have the cattle yet. If he'd been in the role earlier he might not have let Bohanna go!

What's the pay tier structure at the moment in AFLW?

I gather the new expansion sides will be offering tier 2 types a tier 1 salary to get them to cross over.

What if say Port start approaching star Adelaide players but they all say No and it leaves them only being able to sign fringe and outside the best 22 types?

Or clubs like Stkilda or Carlton being raided by Essendon and Hawthorn but North and Melbourne keep the majority of their squads together.

I really think this expansion is happening too soon, there isn't enough talent in the league currently, the gulf between the top couple of teams and the bottom is already massive and it'll only get worse.

The quality in play has certainly gone up in recent seasons but not enough that adding 4 new teams will work. There are gonna be some clubs that just stay on the bottom for the foreseeable future because at the moment it's only semi Pro and it's easy to convince players to join the better teams with promise of success if the money isn't that great.

The CBA is yet to be decided for future seasons, but atm it's about $5k between tiers, which isn't luring anybody. Clubs are able to offer various arrangements outside the salary cap to an infinite degree, which is ultimately what player retention/recruitment rests on (in terms of financial motivation).

Then they'll finish on the bottom of the ladder. Somebody has to.

The longer we wait, the further the remaining 4 teams fall behind. The sooner they do the hard yards, the quicker the talent pool increases. 18 professional clubs fully invested in growing the women's game can cover a lot more ground than 14 clubs.

Btw flashback 6-7 years and a similar argument was taking place: "Not enough talent in SA for one team"! Thank god those short-sighted opinions were ignored by the AFL.

Brisbane and Fremantle probably benefit the most in the short term from expansion.

Apart from losing Hooker and Gibson (Girls hated her anyway) we didn’t lose any major players. Mostly borderline players or older role players.

Interesting, Fremantle drafted better than West Coast in the last 2 years and therefore have better youth than the Eagles.

With 18 teams they will have to look at extending the competition to at least 17 rounds, probably not straight away but it has to be extended as soon as practicable otherwise it will be a grossly unfair competition.

Another thing they will need to look at is extending the playing lists to more than the current 30 players. In a ten round competition, two or three long term injuries and most teams begin to struggle to put a competitive team out the field, it will only get worse as the seasons continue to be extended.

Surely after the season she is currently having Riddell will be first North Melbourne re-sign at the end of the season.

As much as I like Abba and her skills in front of goal, she is over 30 and can disappear for long periods in a game, so I wouldn't too upset if she left.
