Toast Callum Ah Chee is a very good footballer.

He does the most underrated thing in footy: keeps his feet after marking contests, if he doesn't take the mark he's always moving to contest the next possession or get his own loose ball. Falling to the ground at every contest seemed to be our specialty pre-Fages.

I think Cal is keeping Mitch out of the side. He may not have 20 possesion type games but is doing the gut running both ways and impacting contests.

Incredible to think he was recruited to the Suns as a mercurial half forward type player and now is playing all over the ground and using physicality and great overhead marking and spoiling.

He must be leading our 1%ers this year (that aren't your typical Harris Andrews spoils). Chasing, Shepherding, Tackling, Blocking for team mates.

Epitomizes our low possession, direct and high impact style we want to play.

Played an instrumental role in our Collingwood win. His last 10 mins with a few massive efforts back to back that you didn't see on TV but live at the ground he impacted on several contests which led to a rebound 50 for us. Very, very sound player he is.

They've got a few players there that I've had my eye on who aren't really developing as they should.
Will Brodie going OK with the Dockers, May and Lynch have won flags after leaving... all we need now is for Ah Chee and Lyons to win a flag to really imbed the trend.

An ex Lions team -
Mids - Crisp, Yeo, Keays, Redden
Backs - Docherty, Hinge, Aish, Walker, Skinner, Schache
Ruck - Martin

Am sure I've missed some, cant think of a forward though (hope to never add McStay to this list) some decent mids but reckon the ex Suns have them covered

Cal used to cop a bit of criticism in this place for his propensity to have a sudden howler that would cost a goal.

That was fair enough too

Looking at how he is performing now, he appears to have cleaned up that side of his game.

He strikes me as a really hard worker, who is really starting to blossom.

Well played Cal.

Umm I honestly can’t remember such a thing.

I usually stay away from game threads, so I don’t remember such criticism either.

Probably not.

Without trawling through old threads, I can't be sure how often.

All players make mistakes but if the player is considered "fringe" the cries of indignation are amplified.

EDIT: You are wise to stay away from game threads. The knee jerk crap that goes on boggles the mind.

I really should train myself away from them.

It hardly ever happened.

He was in a very defensive role where he was given one job to do so mentally people presumed he had very little skill or ability tbh.

Whereas the opposite was true.

Likewise because he was a defender who always made himself accountable sometimes he was in situations where the only way out was to hack it out.

I don't know whether the coaching group was ever truly aware of how he could play if let loose but the good thing is he came to us as a half forward just learning the game who now applies the defensive skills he learnt over 3 years which many wingers and half forwards have no idea how to do.

I much prefer to watch the game. Rather than read what goes on in a game day thread.
Sometimes I read it after the game, over the next couple of days.

A prevalent thing on the game day thread is people deciding whether someone can play or not based on one passage of play where they stuff up.

They wait for someone to do something wrong then Exhibit A your honour. The emotional outpouring seems to afflict experienced reasonable people as well as those who see a disaster unfolding every game.

It's a funny game footy isn't it.
