At what point do we, as supporters, need to be concerned that our club has become the media’s punching bag?

Essendon brought it upon themselves by experimenting with drugs not approved for use in humans, whom I’m informed made up a majority of their playing list at the time.

Carltank did what Carltank does. Oh and salary cap rorts, which they also do.

St. Kilda decided to pass around a teenaged girl like a bong in a dorm room, and take pics of themselves nude making odd faces at one another, because reasons.

Now I’m sure you’ll agree the media storm was entirely deserved in these instances, but now Collingwood is in the crosshairs for violations against TikTok. WTF?!

There is surely a stage at which we do need to be concerned for the welfare of our players, as Jordy mentioned, or genuinely worried that FA prospects might use the insane level of scrutiny directed at our list as a negative tiebreaker in signing a contract with us. Time for the club to push back, IMHO.
Couldn’t agree more, but it’s every apology and concession we concede ground. Less and less of what makes us human is accepted. People are not robots.

This is the world that leftists want, and when it hits them where it hurts (something that matters to them) there's outrage, as is present on this forum. A slew of cancellation, virtue-signalling and mightier than thou tropes is a sickness that people need to rebel against. An aside, good luck to all idiots who voted in this Country's left-leaning new governing body - morons.

The fact the club apologised to begin with is embarrassing and shows absolutely no spine. We've decided at an executive and board level that we're clearly at the mercy of the woke-mob. Many of whom are on this thread ,and overall board defending these players. Which is a cute irony. And seemingly only blaming the MuRdoCh MeDiA despite the many different organisations who've joined the pile on. Again embarrassing.

There should be multiple bans against Fairfax, NewsCorp, ABC, CrocMedia etc. for the foreseeable future. And I expect players to be incredibly unimpressed with the lack of publicly-facing support from leadership at the club overall.

These young men have been thrown to the wolves by our own organisation, and it makes me sick. For doing something that requires absolutely no explanation.

The Murdoch media have made us into a joke. We have failed miserably. De Goey will walk at seasons end and who can blame him.
I fear you are right, unless the media force CFC to suspend him for the remainder of the season. Also, we are a joke to the media, we are push overs, spineless and i wouldn't blame JDG if he decided to walk.

I actually reject IQ's and Ginnis apology and i apologize to them, for a club that's too spineless to defend them, all the "journos" that are to lazy to spend 30 seconds to find out what this game is. My 3 year old son could of explained it to them, but they are too busy hunting for blood. Last weekend we had a game dedicated to mental health and the serious issue it is, i give you the media.

Thanks for the humour that some of you have managed to inject into this discussion there a few posts back. :D
I was /am so furious with the bullying media and our spineless club that thinks presenting a 'woke" image is more important than publically supporting its own players, that I was actually really surprised when some of the posts made me laugh!! Geez, what an unexpected pleasant feeling in the midst of my boiling rage!! ;)

If you're angered by the clubs decision to take further action against de Goey today and disgusted by the notion he should be made to sit out the game against GWS then let your rage be heard via any of the options below.

The club have greatly misread the mood of the majority of Collingwood supporters on this IMO and the strong probability that de Goey had already cost himself hundreds of thousands of dollars for his night out in Bali was already a mighty penalty to pay for no illegal activity taking place.

I think one of the major contributors is the world has become so woke, self-apologetic and terrified of offending someone, that people in the media have to pull out their pitchforks as well (whether they like it or not), so they don’t get burned on the same pyre.

The Pipe on SEN this morning passed the Gini/IQ story off as a non-entity, and wasn’t even going to mention it, until callers started ringing in bleating. Then some insane Karen rang in and absolutely flipped her wig at him and pretty much every other male on the planet in an A-grade burn in hell rant.

At the end of the day, the journos themselves can’t even sack up and point out the hypocrisy in this for fear of losing their own jobs.

The AFL and AFL media are now a sterile, PC overloaded basket case and won’t be happy until they strip the personality out of every player, fear for being accused of being insensitive.

…and they wonder why people no longer want to go to the footy.

I've said this to friends previously, Collingwood and non-Collingwood fans alike.

The club should be using its influence and pull to both promote the club and undermine our rivals.

Promoting the club includes offering scholarships to Collingwood supporters/members to encourage them to study degrees in journalism. The more voices within the media, the greater our potential influence on either driving the narrative or promoting the club.

Undermining our rivals includes leaking stories about various indiscretions by players and officials from other clubs, attempts to cover such stories up (by either the club or the AFL) and publishing articles that counter any attempts by other clubs or the AFL to undermine Collingwood.

The present circumstance has a similar feel to Cricket Australia's complete abandonment of Andrew Symonds when India toured in 2008 and threatened to boycott the remainder of the series following racial vilification by Harbajhan Singh. Unfortunately for Cricket Australia, they selfishly chose to protect and prioritise their own perceived image and commercial relationships, which then fractured their relationship with both players and supporters, to the detriment of cricket in this country. If the board is not careful, the same could happen at Collingwood.

Ta for info, just sent off a strongly worded email about defending the three guys from crazy media bullying.

Agree with your statement broadly, except you have Moore and Grundy now in the leadership group who are both woke AF. We all saw what happened to Eddy one of the most powerful people in the country…I would have preferred the club stick by the players and if meant sponsors left so be it others will come….what a joke

I sent this to the Membership department in response to my email from them announcing the DeGoey statement.

Team CFC,

Thanks for sharing this.

Jordan De Goey
I’m not much of a fan of the tasteless hand gesture which Jordan used on camera.
I’m not even sure it was his hand who was tugging at the woman’s top. Seemed to me like it matched the tattoo sequencing of a third party male who was hanging with the group on the evening more.
So, while not ideal that he’s getting drunk and it being captured on camera, I think that this incident is far less problematic than the media are portraying it -even with Jordan’s off-field heritage.
This appears to be a club-sanctioned trip, a mid-season break of 2 weeks between games and he otherwise balanced his night out with training etc.
I’m pretty satisfied with his on-field form over the past 2 seasons and think his approach to his preparation has been pleasing for the most part.

Jack and IQ
As for the Tik Tok challenge and Jack and Isaac’s post, my understanding is
  • this is a broad social media challenge
  • this TikTok challenge was instigated by females and is more commonly participated in by females
  • isaac’s girlfriend was in the background
  • some of our AFLW players have also participated in it

The football media
I believe there is a clear media (largely Murdoch-related) campaign against the CFC.
I think that organisation believe it is in their commercial interests to do so to get clicks/reads.
Other media outlets then feel the need to comment.

There is little that most 50 something year old former footballers understand about social media.
There is less prospect they do their research and check their facts before condemning behaviour.
Yet they provide plenty of commentary.

There are almost zero of these media commentators, former players or not, who have not done immature/disrespectful or even illegal things when they were younger (or even more recently) - turning up drunk on camera, driving their cars home while over the limit, consuming illicit substances, being caught in nude photos distributed by underage girls, extra-marital affairs. (Nor has the AFL administration got much of a leg to stand on with many of these issues.)
Are these individuals really the arbiters of calling out players for their behaviour and moral standards with any credibility? Should we be reasonably taking any notice of their views?

As a long-time paid up financial member (who is also the father of daughters and a son aged 16-21), I’d actually prefer to see the Collingwood FC make sure its players welfare is paramount and that there is a bit more of a circling-the-wagons approach taken to media access.
I’m all for players being educated, having appropriate standards, being held to account and am also cognisant of the club’s commercial interests and broader need to be careful of its culture in light of the ‘Do Better’ report.
But I believe the club is currently at risk of being too accommodating to the double standards and misguided views of the AFL press. I think many CFC members share my views.

I hope that the club steers a unified path as it chases success during the remainder of this season and beyond. I’m excited with what the new coaching team and football department are building.
I hope that Jordan De Goey remains on our playing list beyond this season too. Admittedly it would also be welcome if he continued to develop his maturity and judgement in social settings.

Needs more flaming dwarfs.

There needs to be something done by members to address this, at the AGM or something. We pay for this club, and it seems most of us have had a gutful. Time to listen to us.

Usually this kind of thing does get raised at AGM’s.

It could be a lot worse …

… the media could not be talking about us.

When you look at what a club like St Kilda needs to do to get media attention. Would you swap our profile for that? I wouldn’t.

Yes the players put it into the public domain themselves, but if it wasn’t a story when the AFLW players did it (hint: it wasn’t) then it isn’t a story when Ginnivan and Quaynor (and Poulter?) do it too.

We have had open season declared on our club. A line needs to be drawn.

Who knows what the PR people are like at KFC or AIA? And these are still quite new relationships. We know CGU weren’t too keen on some previous incidents. The club are probably under quite a bit of pressure from the sponsors to be squeaky clean.

Here is an extract from the club statement regarding Ginivan and Quaynor.

“After speaking to the Club, the players understood it is not an acceptable trend to participate in and immediately removed the video from their social media platforms.”

The club believes the trend is unacceptable. What do they base this on? Are they the source of all that is right or wrong in the world?

As an educator, I had hoped McRae would know that publicly shaming young people is not an effective way of developing understanding. A quiet discussion behind closed doors about the impact of social media is all that was required in this case.

I just hope trust has not been damaged between the club and players. I fear that it may have been.

A look at the HS I count FOUR more negative stories. Robbo is typically outraged that he didn’t get his pound of blood. This is the same hypocrite that that gave James Hird a free pass during the worst AFL scandal in history. The same hypocrite who forgave Melbourne’s brawling in a public space. Bailey Smith takes drugs in public nothing to see here from Slobbo. Do I need to say more?
