The fact that we were playing the best footy I have seen us play for quite a while for a quarter and a half is what made the pain of the collapse linger a little longer.

Half way through the 2nd quarter I was thinking we were going to get a percentage boosting win, nearly came on here to post a fat lady singing.
For some reason I was never confident aye. I believe alot in what the media types have been saying this week. Especially on the "can't trust them to win games" side of the discussion.

When we win no one cares.

When we lose there's constant traffic.

It's hard to stop yourself.
Even some of the games we won this year you could see many cracks.
For a team that been top 4 three years in a row.. You feel we starting to slip backwards.
We should be more mentally on now then 2019. Although sometimes I feel the 2019/2020 Lions better then 2021/2022 team

A few of our players not what they used to be Zorko, Lyons, Robbo, Andrews and even Rich and Adams dropped off.

Even though we kept taking our 'learnings' out of prior years the drop off in our experienced players hasn't been comparably offset by improvement in younger players.

We do have some good young players coming through and we need to trim our list of any older excess needs to reset.

I think the club thought Bailey, Rayner, Clugga, Berry and hoped Cockatoo come along
Then the younger guys like Dev, Tom Berry, Prior, Sharp progress more.
Think we missing a 3rd gen mid after Neale and Lyons. I said over and over we trying for a forward to become our third mid.
As helps with rotations.

Bailey still up and down.. When he is on he is on. I really prefer him forward then on the ball. Not sure his defensive running as well
Not sure Rayner ever be the player we all hope he be. Could blame ACL although even before that he either on or fully off.
I think Hugh played better on a wing although you have to think this year inside would help him later on. I prefer him to be outside myself with his skills.
Poor J Berry never getting a break from niggles
Prior I do not mind although seems the first to be dropped.

Dev we play him out of position in the firsts and even some VFL games..
Tom Berry as well shows promise VFL then like Dev we prefer Lyons in the middle.
Sharp I really thought from last year he progress and take Robbos wing.

We went back to Matho as his form in the VFL was above the others.
Everyone here writes off Matho although I do think if your best 22 AFL player you should really show your above class in VFL.
We done the same with Mitch he getting a game ahead of Prior.

Also add we used a lot of our cap going for Joe.
Should we used that on a gen 3rd mid.. If we loose McStay I be going for a gen mid now
Not just hope Will Ashcroft will be the answer.

Lets even it out with some positives
Coleman will be a gun
AhChee holding his spot now
Charlie been pretty good the last couple of months, chasing looking like he wants to be here
Joe is Joe.. Kicks 3 in the first then you never see him again for the game. If you think he replaced Steph goal wise we getting more out of him
Hipwood slowly increasing his game since ACL.. Honestly I did not think he was that far off the last few weeks
Payne got some more games into him.

Sorry, on the bolded, many were saying in the week leading up to this game that we are mad if we play Fort as sub - so there is no hindsight attached to it whatsoever even as a footy numpty like me. It was obvious. You have minimum two guys coming off soft tissue injuries, Zorko and Coleman, on a cold day in Melbourne against a fast Richmond. Surely the club new all of this yet it plays Fort in the event ONE player gets injured whereas a mid / utility can cover 21 players with a shuffling of the decks
With talls I do wonder how many playing injured
Andrews looks like he cannot jump and change directions. Wonder how bad his knees are.
Oscar could be carrying something etc

So maybe Fort was there for them more then Coleman or Zorko

That makes sense if that was the case but if so it would've been smarter to have Payne as the sub. At least he can run around a bit and replace a tall forward or back. And provide a tall option on the wings with McStay rucking on the remote chance that Oscar went down.

Eric's press conference today was a lot like some of Fagan's post match interviews including Richmond haven't been getting enough credit and are a good team, there were positives out of the game and the kicker that the ladder doesn't represent where the Lions are at and the tough stretch of games coming up is the perfect way to prepare for September. I didn't by any of it.

Usually the players have been a bit more harsh about our performances but they really shouldn't be put in that position

I look forward to seeing the same post after we get knocked out of finals

"This 80 point loss to Melbourne is just the wakeup call we need before heading into our elimination final against Richmond at the MCG!" -Fagan

ML with respect I completely disagree. I've seen many teams capable of turning it on for a half especially if the opposition was as poor as Richmond was then. You need strength , mental application and a proper team defence strategy to win games against top sides.

Dominating opposition teams for a half is useless if you can't protect your domination when you're not going so hot.

I'd give it up on Fort . He was ok against GC against lesser opposition. Flogging a dead horse there.
You forgot to say.... in your opinion. ;)

Watching parts of the 2nd half makes me want to claw my eyes out. Cam Rayner has no future in the midfield if he isn't willing to defend. He was bad, actually worse than bad... Atrocious at any sort of defensive plays. Just no desire to defend and always hang off the pack on the attacking side. Unsure if this is a coaching thing or if players make their own decisions.

Richmond also shut off the corridor which once again we showed we have no in game plan b. They hit packs harder, they came in aggressive from both D50 and F50 from centre bounces, we plodded in. We were deep in D50 as well. Bolton took off multiple times and got in the gap between midfield and Defence which drew us forward and left harris 1v1.

This was very much an effort loss, probably over confident with the score line being such a margin.

Harris also looks cooked. You can be slow and still look like you're putting in effort running, but he jogs....

Big offseason needed for Kiddy with his Tank. Will be a massive asset to our team next year if he can run out the entire match

Harris Andrews has been insipid for a couple of years. He refuses to fly and go for his marks and does not put his body on the line. His refuses to body spoil and often just reaches over and waves his arm at the ball without impacting the contest. His body language is also sooo negative, continually looks defeated which must have a negative impact on his team mates.

If his name wasn't Harris Andrews, he'd have been dropped a long time ago.

Time to give Payne a go in his place.

Haven't heard it . Got a text from a PP with significant knowledge in the game who said if that's what they think we've got no hope. Who is feeding them this stuff ?

My only observation is why put a young guy in this situation. Just let them play and leave the insights into how we're going to those who are paid to be the face of the club.

My phones going off with laughing emojis.

Looks like the club doesn't see it the same way as supporters.

Small correction but I believe he was saying the ladder wasn’t representative of where Richmond are at as a team (not us).

The responses from the club to this week are at the nutty end of the spectrum .

Whatever Fages said the effort against Essendon wasn't sufficiently there and they completely misfired from the coaches box on gameday. Which cost us the match.

Against the Tigers we know things went wrong and players were down but at the heart of it we choked.

It's all cool . Just fess up that we need to get better. All this drivel about how well we did and how good the opposition are is nauseating.

I agree with the bolded.

I have felt something has been badly off with Harris for the past two seasons.

If what I have read here is true, he has arthritis in both knees and his knees are shot.

If true, that explains everything.

All I can feel now for Harris, is sympathy.
