That’s the point.
It is now “careless” in a contact sport every time your opponent is injured.

If this Trent Cotchin incident happened today based on the fact Shiel was concussed then one would presume he would have been suspended & have missed the grand final.
Would the result of the 2017 gf been different?
Who knows.
At least we now know there is a punishment awaiting ALL players of all teams if someone is concussed no matter whether it is accidental or on purpose. Got it!

Here’s the thing that people who A: didn’t watch the game or B: weren’t there don’t know. Shiel played on after that knock and was racking it up. He was involved in a massive hit with Astbury late in the quarter. Basically Dave smashed him in a big hip and shoulder. I know, because i saw it about 50m in front of me. That’s what knackered Shiel. Also, Cotchin got to the ball first and actually protected himself by rolling his shoulder in. If you have ever played the game, you’ll know he did the right thing. It’s a collision sport. Stuff like that happens. You can’t compare Cripps wiping a guy out with Cotchin who played at the ball.

Oh it’s a “collision sport” when it happens to a Richmond player but a dog act when a Carlton player does it.

No, the standard is now set and I expect any player who concusses a player in the finals whether accidental or not will receive weeks based on “high” impact, “medium” impact etc.

It HAS to be consistent, so if a Geelong star player (eg Cameron)misses the GF so be it.

Sorry mate, where did i use the expression “dog act”? And agaiin, you can’t compare Cotchin v Cripps this incident. There are far more suitable ones i am sure off. They are nothing like each other.

Yep... sure he did...

Chose to bump, left the ground and concussed a guy.

The most obvious 2 weeks ever, to anyone with a hint of common sense.

Will be a jolly laugh if Daicos misses the Grand Final due to accidentally bumping someone.

If the shoe is on the other foot...

The precedent has now been set. Let's hope they carry through the same conditions on ALL concussion related accidents into the finals.

"He chose to bump when he could have jumped out of the way and rolled along the ground like a poodle...etc, etc, etc"

The precedent has been set for ages, we lost Maynard to a bump exactly the same as that earlier this year, get over it.

Joke’s on you; we have two of them.

Yeah, sure it has.

Hawkins got off. The victim got concussion.

Cotchin got off.

It isn't consistent. EVERY SINGLE PLAYER who concusses another by leaping in the air, by a tackle, by any means, accident or not - HAS to be suspended if we are to keep this consistent. That is in the finals as well. No wriggle room.

That's like Carlton saying they had 2 Kernahans
Leigh and Kelvin Matthews

Ok, and he is clearly looking at the ball as well and he didn't leave the ground. So comparing Cripps to Cotchin.....?

Players choose to jump in the air all the time -whether they mark the ball or not. If you stop footballers jumping in the air. Good luck. "If you choose to jump in the air, you are responsible (unless you are trying to mark the ball and then do whatever you want)"
Players get elbows (Accidental), contact in the head etc all the time. What happens if that occurs in a marking contest? No one is willing to answer this. Surely eventually the rules will be changed for that

Make it black and white in the rules in future then.

1- you are not allowed to leap in the air unless it is a marking contest
2- if you injure someone in a marking contest in future you are liable for their injury if they incur one
3- you will incur the same number of weeks as they incur...or should they make it double?

How do you know he CHOSE to bump?

Were you inside his mind?

There is just as much likelihood that he CHOSE to contest for the ball in the air.
He might have thought the Brisbane player would have leapt for the high ball as well, so Cripps chose to leap in response to that.
You are dealing with miliseconds. Contest or not to contest...oh shi*t I am committed to a contest. I should have rolled along the ground instead to prevent anyone getting hurt.

"Chose to bump" is now the catch-all phrase for anyone who takes their feet off the ground now.
If you don't want the game to be aerial, say so. You can only leave the ground if you contest for a mark. Make that a rule.

Cripps made a decision.

His body didn't mysteriously leave the ground without his control.

That decision resulted in knocking a player out.

He's copped his suspension. He then lost his appeal at the tribunal.

The AFL isn't banning jumping in the sport. They aren't banning contests.

They're penalising players for not showing a sufficient duty of care to fellow players. Mostly due to the very well recognised long-term repercussions of that behaviour.

As I said, some Neanderthals will think the game has gone soft, but they'd be making stupid arguments.
