I would love to know the amount in $ a club makes as an investment on a player per annum.

Yes they get paid but then the players have access to dieticians, masseurs, physios, doctors, food, counseling. Psychologist, career counseling, food, specialist coaches, fitness staff etc etc etc

Most times we see it as what players get paid but it’s more than that much more

What's the relevance?

You wouldn't really call it an "investment" anyway. It's an operating cost.

Whats the relevance?

None just out of curiosity

I only know of one person at another club who works in football department and he outlined some things I wasn’t aware of and had not considered

They hired tutors to assist some players who were studying university degrees etc etc , they hired cooks and home help with some, girlfriends and wives given access to nanny’s and support when kids came along etc

He used the term investment in terms make an investment in a player once he walks through the doors.

It's a reasonably interesting observation/question.

The number of players on the list divided by the the combined salaries of all football department staff plus a percentage of facilities running costs but not including marketing and sales costs.

What would be the average cost of getting and maintaining a player to be available for AFL selection v the cost (on average) of an AFL footy player (their salary). It doesn't go anywhere but essentially the difference would be a plant/asset maintenance expense. I see the players as machines short term productive assets that need to be maintained.

Where did this come from? I don’t see myself that way at all. I enjoy conversing with many on here but the hyperbole about player movement is too much at times.
You specifically told supporters to grow up and described your preferred supporter base (NBA) as more developed.
Probably unintentional but it read as extremely condescending.

They hired "girlfriends"?

They also end up with serious debilitating injuries from the physical toll of playing AFL. How many players have knee injuries and end up with bone on bone.

It’s sad that the best part of the last 5 pages was a west coast supporter making gags…

Some people need to get over it loyalty isn’t everything in sport it’s their job would anyone here stay at their job if offered an extra 30% elsewhere? Wouldn’t have thought so…

In summary Dunks is gone and Martin is better in the side than Schache let’s move on folks… also Barrass will look good in red white and blue kthxbye

Dermie talks about the difficult adjustment he had to retirement. Little things like renewing a licence or registering his car was difficult for him as the club had always done it for him.
Yes, each list spot is a massive investment

I wonder if he's still requiring assistance.

Ps. walked past him and Gerard at half time last Friday at the G. Gerard was scurrying along the corridor stuffing his face with a half time savoury with Dermie beaming in tow. He's not as big as I imagined. Rover size these days I expect. But his smile was disarming.

Dermie is only 186cm, and Dunstall wasn't tall either (188cm). Either of them would be short for a bulldogs midfielder

I have stayed in my job despite being offered roughly 50% more elsewhere. And that was without thousands of little kids idolising me or the opportunities being an AFL player offers you. So maybe not everyone is money motivated or I'm just a sucker for being loyal.

Wish Dunkley or anyone else in pursuit of greater remuneration well but don't give them an out or excuse their actions as one everyone would take.

I'm fully supportive of all player's movements and I'll never begrudge any of them for leaving. I'll be sad when we lose good ones like Dunks, but when one player leaves a new one always comes in. There's as many reasons to be happy about player movements as there are to be sad. I think being comfortable with change and not getting TOO attached to the players is key. Just be grateful for the time that we had them for and wish them the best. It doesn't mean you're not as passionate about footy to feel that way. Obviously sport naturally leads to feelings of tribalism, and maybe that's part of the allure, but don't get sucked into it to the point that it makes you feel bitter.

It’s like watching Game of Thrones, don’t get too attached to anyone 😁

How the game has changed. Would Sam De Koning even have a match up in the backline back in the day. Probs ruck.
Pursar was such a rock-solid ruck for us in the 80s. Bontempelli's height.

What the hell are these guys eating these days?
Just a few years ago I walked past the SA u18 champs squad and felt short, and I'm 6 foot 2!
Kids these days are monsters. Even Stevie J was 191cm IIRC.

For the 108th thousand time. These examples are completely irrelevant when it comes to playing elite sport. They are not the same thing. Will people stop using these examples.

I don’t understand why they are irrelevant in today’s environment? Why can’t players see their club as purely an employer? They don’t get to choose who drafts them unless they are a father son or they game they system somehow (Bailey Smith I’m looking at you son!). Just because we have loyalty to the dogs doesn’t mean our players always do? We are also very quick to turn on individuals that may no longer “suit” (Luke Beverage I’m talking about you!) even though technically he has been a major part of bringing us everything any of us have ever asked for.

I think a pure corporate analogy is extremely apt and I think people are absolutely entitled to use it.
