That only works if Setters agrees to a 1 year deal - if someone else comes knocking with a 2 year deal, what do you do then? Are you offering 2 years or letting him go?
Yeah becomes tricky then. Im not sure what we do in that case but I'm leaning towards letting him go. (edit: 1 y deal with triggers for a second as per J post above)

My concern is that some types only start delivering when the pressure on for a new contract....bit like me at my work.

Yeah seems a good idea - if he still wants to then leave for a better offer than facilitate a trade

cant go rewarding blokes with a straight 2 year deals based on a couple of decent games

And Acres at Freo 😬.

Setterfield should be looking for a much better offer then we should be offering him. If he gets a decent offer from somewhere else and leaves then no one has done the wrong thing by anyone imo.

His contract length has only been assumed. Fair chance he is actually contracted give the lack of movement. I like Fog, have done since pre draft days, but clearly is not in the mix for a permanent best 22 spot any time soon.
I'd imagine he probably moved on a 3 year deal, seems unlikely a young fella would've moved for only 2 years, probably contracted for next year yea

In regards to trading setters. We really have to understand our draft strategy and whether we have an eye on someone late.
However Walsh Back and Kennedy foot suggests Setters is best 22. If Acres has to cover a midfield position, how are we ahead?

We missed finals because our "bottom six" are inconsistent from week to week and made crucial skill and decision errors in key moments - if we're going into matches next year without having to worry about potential liabilities on both wings that's a major step forward - Acres is a big tick for the right price

We may have seen a better bottom 6, if not for the extended injuries

So, where we are at now:

Senior List: 33
Rookie List: 5
Rookie B: 1 (removed Owies, who cannot stay on Rookie B list, is likely now on senior list)
33+5=38, max=42. So 4 places now free, along with one free spot on the Rookie B list.

Waiting new contracts:
Senior List: Marchbank, Setterfield, Fogarty, Ed Curnow (4)
Rookie List: none
Rookie B: Akuei (1)
This is a good resource - thanks for updating.

My take:
Definite: 2x ND picks and Acres.
Likely: 1x Rookie

Marchbank & Ed - good value for 1 year deals.

Setterfield largely dependent on potential targets - if something comes up he'll be used to cover the cost and list spot. Retaining Ed though could suggest he will be moved on either way for a draft pick - makes sense if we like the draft as he and later picks could go toward facilitating a second round pick.

Fogarty - if uncontracted, comes down to leaving a list spot open or not, which I think we'll end up doing. My guess is we'll delist him late and invite him and others to train as potential SSP.

Disagree.

We missed finals because all the team, maybe even coaching staff too, took mediocre teams like Gold Coast, St Kilda and Adelaide too lightly.

If you're laying it on individuals, Charlie kicked 3.9 in the last two matches (plus one that went OOBF and another that fell short).

He kicks 4.8 or 5.7 (or better), we play finals.

He's not bottom six, is he?

I’d be offering Setterfield a one year deal with triggers for a second.

Had a strong second half of the year but we shouldn’t forget where he came from. There may be reasons for it we don’t know, but his 2021 was awful.

On the back of a decent 2020, it was one hell of a regression. I remember seeing him up close at Carlton v Bullants VFL in Preston - he was running for the afternoon having broken his hand - he literally looked a shadow of his former self. Almost looked sick.

We hope he won’t regress back to that level but if he does, we’re not locked into that second year.

And I disagree with you on Levi also. Love the guy and wish him nothing but the best, and he had a good year, but we had to move on - for his sake, and for ours.

I’m glad we finally did.
Don't agree on Levi.

Clearly his knee was ok. Wouldn't have cost much to retain him.

Just had his best goal kicking season yet and went at 62%.

There’s no way he would have got 3 years, surely not.

If that’s the case then my opinion of SOSs recruiting has hit rock bottom

Great, but he would have played down back had he been at Carlton this year - and probably stymied the development of Young in doing so.

Well, no but as a back up KPP - at either end, or even as a 3rd tall with JSOS rucking.

So with our backline decimated and forward line relatively intact, you think Levi would have played forward as 3rd tall alongside Harry and Charlie?

No chance IMO. The only time he may have gone forward is for the few weeks Harry was out injured.

Hoping we are having a serious crack at Sean Darcy.

Would prefer we have a crack at Meek.

Darcy is clearly better, but he'd be much more expensive in both salary and draft capital.

Getting Darcy in would also be over-investing in the ruck division IMO.

Yes, that period too.

And who knew Charlie would hold up for the whole season (that's a minor miracle in itself)?

His knee is ok at gold coast in part because they don't use him as relief ruck so he just sits at full forward, if we played him it would have to be as a genuine forward not relief ruck, not sure he gets in ahead of Charlie or harry
