Herald Sun has article about club describing our plans for Lobb ... does anyone have HS access? Thanks in advance
Naughton, Marra and Lobb used in the forward line

Darcy being in defense

Like I posted in response to another poster, if our club is implementing change, on the back of what posters on Big Footy, or those that have been away from the elite level for 40+ are suggesting, I’d be concerned for the immediate future of the club.

There wouldn’t be anyone in here that knows what’s best for our club on and off the field, over the people in charge at board level or within the football department. Sorry, but suggesting otherwise is peak delusion.

Even when outside influence is encouraged, it should be from others that are involved at the elite level.

Obviously, the outside influence should be from others at the 'elite' level, but my whole point is Beveridge seems to have run a 'my way of the highway' approach (just look at the departures from the club...) and clearly that needs to change (as the club seems to have finally acknowledged).

I'm not so stupid to suggest the club should implement ideas from all of us or randoms on Facebook.

I'm simply saying it would be a nice change for the club to open its eyes and maybe consider getting a strong Head of Football, a tactical/strategy assistant, an assistant that can improve our kicking, our defence. Be smarter about our appointments rather than picking mates.

It was Jay Clarke who wrote it. He also said on Triple M about half an hour ago that Luke Beveridge simply can’t miss the finals next year because “missing the finals two years in a row would be unacceptable with our spine” (which included Liam Jones, Rory Lobb and Sam Darcy).

I’d take the podgy idiots views with a grain of salt, although I do feel not progressing further with our entire team is unacceptable.

If Jones comes back fit and firing it’s a decent spine

The trade period is just around the corner and Jay Clark and Sam Landsberger are here to take you through all the latest news and whispers.

Western Bulldogs want to combine Rory Lobb, Aaron Naughton and Jamarra Ugle-Hagan in attack next season as part of plans to rejoin the premiership contenders.

Lobb, 29, is determined to land at the kennel in next month’s trade period after productive conversations with Bulldogs’ coach Luke Beveridge.

The ruck-forward remains contracted at Fremantle for one more season but is eager to continue his AFL career at a third club in 2023.

The Dogs will have to pull-off a trade deal with the Dockers to secure Lobb and could offer a future second-round draft pick to begin talks with Fremantle.

Lobb would provide another dynamic marking target in the forward half next year to star centre half forward Naughton and No. 1 pick Ugle-Hagan.

Sam Darcy could be switched back into defence alongside former Blue Liam Jones who will slot into a full-back role.

The Bulldogs are determined to stiffen their defensive operations for next season after bowing out in the elimination final on the back of a Grand Final last year.

Lobb bolsters their goal scoring power and helps lighten the load on Naughton who carried a huge responsibility in the forward half this year.

Fremantle has indicated it does not want to lose both talls Rory Lobb and Griffin Logue in this year’s exchange period.

However Lobb was hopeful of making a move this year after failing to secure a trade out of Fremantle last year when Greater Western Sydney showed some interest.

Lobb was under the impression the club would entertain a trade deal this year if he delivered for the team on the field this season.

Fremantle needs to be able to afford a blockbuster deal for Luke Jackson from Melbourne on a long-term contract worth more than $800,000 a season.

The Dockers are also dealing with the potential exits of Darcy Tucker, Blake Acres, Lloyd Meek and Logue.

I’m more coming around to Lobb if the club is confident Darcy can play defence short term. Darcy should in theory provide just as much intercept ability as Naughton but is also a better user on both sides than Naughts.

Naughts providing more defensive pressure and ground ball ability up forward.

Luke Jackson has a new suitor!

We need to draft some quality KPD's and then we're pretty set for a while. Most of our KPP's are quite young and should have solid careers from her on out.

If we can snag a good KPD it might be time to look to the midfield again next year with our first rounder

The whole ‘Bevo only brings in his mates’ is just rubbish. How many of the current or past coaches or support staff were “Mates”? Most of the ones that had been there across his whole time at the club were there prior. Hansen, King, Smith etc.

Maddox is one, who are the others that are considered mates? It’s just running with rumours from BF it seems.

Spangher and Webb

Would hope we add more than Jones and a 20yr old Darcy, who’s not a natural defender, to our back half for next season.

Anything less than Lobb (if it happens), Jones, and an established KPD would be a failed off season in my opinion.

I personally think our structure would be better with Darcy forward and Naughton back. From the 2 games, Darcy struggled to keep his man locked down. But all good if the coaches think this structure is best. What would kill me is if we train all summer with Darcy back and JUH/Naughts/Lobb forward, then in Round 1, Bevo decides that the forward line isn’t working and Darcy doesn’t have a match up, so he swings the magnets….

What’s the plan for Bruce?..

Personally I would use Naughton in defence. That would make a significant difference.

It's not just coaching staff either; it's also players. Doesn't anyone else find it a bit sus that we seem to recruit a Hawks player every year? And they all played under Bevo... surely just a coincidence...?

Bevo has been running a "jobs for mates" program since he walked in the door. It's blatant nepotism and it's largely to blame for our predicament right now.

Duryea is our best small defender. Suckling was serviceable enough. I assume you’re trolling.

What worries me is how much are we paying Bruce to sit in the VFL ?

I agree that we need Lobb as a fwd /ruck which has been a big issue over past few years but once he is there our list is unbalanced (again)

Surely we are looking at a tall back option ? And I don’t agree that Jonesy is the answer at 32 years old on a 3 year contract. I think he is a one year stop gap at best. If this issue isn’t solved we go into 2024 with a very much aging and average key back structure which will be exposed again

I’m not overly concerned if Dunkley leaves as long as we have value back in terms of a top 10 pick plus change (2nd or future 2nd rounder) it will give opportunity to West or Garcia and we will pick up a mid somewhere this draft, probably one of the 2 first rounders we will have, so assume it will be a quality player.

Yep his marking and high ball game could truely by a weapon, completely understand where you’re coming from that we need to fix the entries but honestly if we don’t fix that it doesn’t matter whose down there.

Jones to take the biggest forward & Darcy as the interceptor would provide a million times more intercepting power than we have this year, and alllows either Gardner to play his rightful role of #2 stopper which he will be much more comfortable in or Keath if he finds his form again (still holding out hope it was just injuries and preparation this year) as that #2 which he’s better suited for.

I’d then build it out with Doc & Red the two main defensive smalls (who both provide varying degrees of marking & offense) Dale the main ball user then shift Daniel out for another medium. 2021 Williams would be perfect as someone who offers a big body whose good one on one but can intercept & use the ball. Depending on form though.

Other options would be possibly Cleary or my first choice would be Buku, I think he could be a real weapon in the right system not relying on him as a tall. 4th tall medium who can defend and intercept & is pretty handy with ball in hand.

Doc Jones Darcy
Dale Gardner/Keath Ed

Buku/Cleary/Williams

I like that mix tbh and it can be done with just bringing in Jones while we’d love a Barrass or Logue just doesn’t seem like it’s happening. Then build through the draft with a Buss or Hayes etc and reassess next year when more options might open up.
